Moon rock found among Bill Clinton's stuff

Only 843 pounds of moon rocks exist on Earth, according to NASA.

Now, 30 years after it went missing, one of those precious rocks has been found among memorabilia belonging to former President Bill Clinton.

A worker found it Wednesday morning, quite by accident, inside one of thousands of nondescript boxes in an Arkansas library.

"It's a bit of a mystery solved," said Bobby Roberts of Little Rock's Central Arkansas Library System. "It's kind of like, 'where'd I leave my wallet?' "

The moon rock is one of 50 so-called Goodwill Moon Rocks brought back aboard Apollo 17 and presented to each of the states. They're unique because they're among the only NASA moon rocks ever given as gifts, says NASA's Louis Parker.

Another 50 rocks from the first lunar landing mission, Apollo 11, were also given to the states. One of those is now on display at the Arkansas Museum of Discovery, Roberts said.

A worker cataloging materials from the Clinton governorship was in the middle of going through nearly 2,000 boxes of archived documents when he stumbled upon the priceless artifact.

"He didn't know what it was until he opened the box, because the catalog for the box listed the contents as a plaque. But it made no mention of the moon rock," Roberts said with a laugh.

It's about as "big as the end of your thumb."

Roberts said it was presented to the state in 1976, when Clinton's predecessor David Pryor was governor. Clinton won his gubernatorial election in 1978.

"We're always interested when one of these comes along," said Parker, who recalled that Colorado Gov. John Vanderhoof actually brought one of the moon rocks home with him. Vanderhoof later returned it to the state.

Clinton's staff has been informed, and Roberts said they were "very excited" to hear the news.

No word on how the rock ended up among the Clinton memorabilia.

"It just got packed up, and it's just been sitting there," said Roberts.

Now, the rock is stored in a library safe, Roberts said. "But it needs to be in a museum."

CNN's Chandler Friedman contributed to this report.

He was in Houston at the time, and he was in the air force. It is quite possible with his political affiliations he was present close to the rocket, so yeah, it is a good possibility. Just his presence alone drops the IQ in any building he walks into.

And before the ignorant get involved he was impeached, he was not removed from office. There is a difference, learn about your government.

A popular myth among people who read no deeper than the talking points. The White House keeps a list of government property. During Clinton's eight years in office, he accepted gifts from several donors (this is true of all presidents, so calm down). The White House curator didn't enter some of these gifts onto the list of government property. These were the items the Clintons took with them as they left, assuming that if they weren't on the government list, they were free to do so. Even if was a poor decision, you can see why they made it. I mean, you can see why they made it if you look at the issue objectively, and not through your patented Rush Limbaugh Urine-colored Sunglasses.

Don't defend Clinton to me. It makes you sound almost as amoral and just plain sleezy as he is. For the record, I'm a Democrat, but I have standards I hold my elected officials to, and Clinton fell very short of them on several levels. Save your pithy remarks for the people in your orbit who aren't intelligent enough to see you for the giant overblown windbag you so obviously are. I'll bet your just as much of a lying hypocrite in your life as he is in his. Anyone who could be such a rabid fan of a man with such huge character flaws would have to be.

No conspiracy – it was likely on a desk in some room in the Governor's mansion that got packed up by a moving company 25 years ago. Do you idiots honestly believe that someone could fence a moon rock? Sheez. Clinton was a fr better and smarter leader than any of the GOP dolts running in the next election. "Moon rock found among bill clinton's stuff" Really? That's the headline you're going with for this story when it's about a gift of rock in a box at a library? The title suggests Clinton stole the rock....in a world where people just glance headlines and draw conclusions from there.... I'll take that as being a politically motivated title as well as just irritating to be suckered in to reading a non-story. Pathetic.

They're both brilliant accomplished people, but they also seem to have a huge feeling of entitlement. Bill has behaved like a dog his entire marriage. @ Sari. Amazing how the Clintonistas are having a fit at the very thought of someone thinking he would do ANYTHING wrong. Like I said, the guy is brilliant, but his lack of moral character is legendary. Nothing has been debunked as far as Clinton is concerned. The fact that you seem to adore him no matter what he did or does says a lot about your character as well, or the lack thereof. I'm a Dem and I didn't vote for him in either election for that very reason. I don't care how intelligent someone is, if they are a lying, cheating scum bag in their personal life, I don't want them representing me or my Country.

You make a reasonable point to some extent. However, the government in general is again showing incompetence. Every ounce of this sample cost a vast amount of money. They should not have brought back so much if they had no better use for it. It also could have been auctioned for maybe a million $. Unlike meteorites, it has not been burned mostly away in the atmosphere. It was totally irresponsible to embed it in plastic. I am certain that lots of small laboratories would have liked it for free and it may have inspired or contributed to progress.

When he left office, his movers stole priceless artifacts and artwork from the walls of the White House. Do you remember the Photoshopped image of the large caravan of Afganistan people leaving the White House with everything strapped to a flatbed pickup truck? Well as it happens Clinton had to return many of the historic items that were not his property. Things such as one of the kind portraits of presidents, silver, crystal, and other historic items. HIlliary blamed a botched moving list as the reason. But the White House did not get its stolen china back. HIlliary kept those items and said most first ladies took the china. So now there is an inventory done and the Secret Service posts a guard on the pantry so it cannot be taken in the move. So when Clinton left we had to buy new china for the White House to the tune of $25,000.

    September 23, 2011 at 12:11 am |

Like there's not about 40-50 other sets of china already in the White House inventory....
I'm sure you could find stuff like this about EVERY President who has moved out of the White House if that's your goal in life.
If I remember correctly, Bush pretty well cleaned out Air Force One when he left.

If you actually read the article you will find that the moon rock in question was packed up with other things when Clinton left the governor's office in Arkansas BEFORE he was in the White House and that it has been in storage in a museum in Arkansas for thirty years.

And here's a thought for all the Monica jokesters–that also means that the only way Monica would have had contact with that rock would have been if she had made a trip to rummage around through thousands of boxes in an Arkansas museum she probably didn't even know existed. DUH

I'm in the military and have moved with 4 times. I think each time we've ended up with something that should have stayed with the house we were moving out of. Even after trying multiple strategies to mark things that we don't want the movers to touch. So a botched moving list is a very easy thing to happen.

I actually met a guy who truly believes there was never a moon landing. He buys in the whole Capricorn theory. When I first heard his say this, I thought it was a joke. The more he spoke, I realized he was the joke.

    • stonecrow

I doubt we went to the moon. I see no proof we did...never been back. All the technology we have today you would think we would go all the time. it was a necessary ploy back then to have the US look superior...sorry for all of those who believe it. Our gov't is not above lying to its own people.

      September 23, 2011 at 8:44 am |
      • MT

So, your rationale for believing we never went to the moon is that we stopped? What are you, two years old? The moment you don't see something right in front of you, it ceases to exist? We went several times. According to your logic, if we went a hundred times and then stopped, there would "be no proof we went."

We stopped for the same reason we ended the shuttle program. The benefits were less than the costs. I suppose now that the shuttle program is over, you think there never was one?

      • Thinks2010

Judy–Some staffer probably just packed it up with all the other stuff. You don't think Clinton, the then departing governor, packed up his office do you. Take off your foil cap and use a little sense when thinking about things. Don't you think that if he had taken it for himself he would have put it somewhere where he could enjoy it instead of in a box destined to sit in museum storage in Arkasas for thirty years. Really, think it through before spewing some knee-jerk righty criticism.

        September 23, 2011 at 12:18 am |
      • Judy

To Thinks2010 – I just retired from a company I worked for over 10 years. I did not pack up my own office. Who would be responsible if a piece of company property ended up in a box in my home?
I bet you have no idea who Soros is and how he controls Obama and the Clintons and most of the liberals in Washington. Yes, I am a conservative and proud of it.

        September 23, 2011 at 12:31 am |
      • Thinks2010

Judy–There's noting wrong with being a conservative, but I do think the tendency of many on the right to make unfounded, poorly thought out statements like your initial post deserves criticism. I used to be a conservative and many of my friends and family are conservatives and are people I love and respect even though I disagree with their politics. One of the many things I appreciate about them is that their conservatism is well thought out and they do not engage in shallow cheap shots but offer well thought out critiques instead,

      • HWMNBN

@Judy, you ask "who would be responsible if a piece of company property ended up in a box in my home?" Answer: the movers. The scenario you described is not larceny if there's no intent.

And if he was trying to slip away with it, don't you think it would be in his possession, not in a box he hasn't seen for 30 years. This was obviously not a case of theft, its a case of mishandling.

Fox News made up the stories about them taking things, they later recanted.Check http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1689
      quoted"
During the White House transition in January, one story proved irresistible to many conservative pundits: Departing Clinton staffers had gone on a wild rampage and "trashed" or "vandalized" the White House, even looting Air Force One. Allegations of the Clinton aides' reckless destruction of public property swept through the media. For some, the story symbolized the difference between a morally compromised Clinton presidency and a more dignified, honorable Bush administration.

An official government investigation, however, reveals one major problem with these stories: They apparently never happened. According to statements from the General Services Administration that were reported on May 17, little if anything out of the ordinary occurred during the transition, and "the condition of the real property was consistent with what we would expect to encounter when tenants vacate office space after an extended occupancy."

Ironically, the investigation came in response to a request from Rep. Bob Barr (R.-Ga.), and many conservatives who had assumed that the wild rumors would be confirmed by an official inquiry. That wasn't the case. (The "looting" of Air Force One had also been denied months ago by officials at Andrews Air Force base–Kansas City Star, 2/9/01.)

Fox's Edge With Paula Zahn (5/18/01) covered the GSA investigation, though no mention was made concerning Fox's role in the story. The same was true for Special Report With Brit Hume, which aired a brief report on the GSA's findings (5/18/01). Guest anchor Tony Snow could not have been less specific in his opening comments: "Remember those accusations in the media that outgoing Clinton administration staffers trashed the White House when they left? Well, now the General Services Administration says the stories weren't true."

You folks who say otherwise are just using any flimsy excuse to attack someone with your witless remarks about ANYTHING remotely near the subject at hand. Political discussions can easily degenerate into wild remarks about someone's looks or clothes.

Why does the Government need 843 pounds of these rocks? They should take some of them and crush them to a size suitable for setting in a ring, etc. sell them with a Certificate of Authenticity and raise a few billion to apply to the debt.

The perfect example of what's wrong with this country. You see no value in rock from another heavenly body, you just want to grind it up to make more currency. In case you havent been paying attention, money is worthless, it's just a human construct that in the end is meaningless. But, you wouldn't hesitate one second to take something truly priceless and grind it up for more stupid money.

      • Rod C. Venger

How is a moonrock priceless? Just 250,000 miles away there's a few trillion tons of it. It's "worth" is an artificial construct. Take that stone and mix it in with 100 same-sized rocks of a volcanic nature, could you tell it from the others? Bet not! It not actually worth anything...except to people who think it does. PT Barnum said it best, "There's a sucker born every minute"

No matter how many times people repeat the made up stories that the Clintons stole White House china, silver, furniture, it doesn't make it true. No president or his family has left the White House with the property of the White House. Those were the same silly stories that circulated when Mrs. Reagan replaced the china, the stories were that she did it so she could steal the existing china.

Perhaps he was thinking of Nixon and Air Force One. I remember a special (I believe on the History Channel) where the head AF steward at that time mentioned Nixon taking ALOT of stuff with him. I took it to mean embroidered linens etc, but could have been china also. There was no mention if any of it was ever asked for back.

Why don't you read the WHOLE story. It was given to the state of which he was the GOVERNOR. Long before he was the President. It was not in his possesion when found. It was in a box with archived documents from when he was the GOVERNOR. He had it long before he was impeached, before he was the President and long before he even lived in the White House. You don't care though because you probably won't even read my whole response since you don't read the whole article of a story before commenting on it.

      September 22, 2011 at 8:51 pm |
      • vet4vets

Why don't YOU read the whole story. The rock was presented in 1976, two years before he won his gubernatorial election. Yeah, just slipped in there with is photos and documents and who knows what else. I wonder if there is a lock of his hair from when he held up airport traffic to get his $200 haircut. You must not be very bright.

Many US governors and Presidents have libraries and national archives that represent their tenure. Bill Clinton did not take that rock and sell it some place. Those were and still are national treasures and archives.

Some people, seriously do need to get a grip.

Yes. Something I wrote below. If he'd wanted to make a profit from it, it wouldn't be in a random box somewhere in a library in Arkansas. If anything, it shows how little regard people have for the Apollo program. Now a bunch of fools think the Moon landing didn't even happen... But even so they'll write that the Moon rock was stolen, and at the same time say the Moon landing was fabricated. Some Americans are real pieces of work.

Uh, for those writing that he stole it, you need to think about what possible good it might have done him while it sat unknown and in archival storage all those years in a box of assorted stuff from his governorship. If he'd known about it or really been interested inhaving it, he wouldn't have put the thing in an archive box. Chances are that a staffer or mover just packed the thing not knowing why the governor kept a little chunk of rock on a shelf somewhere.

    September 22, 2011 at 7:02 pm |
  75. orlop

If it was a gift to the state of Arkansas why was it not immediately put on public display somewhere? These politicians ( Not just Clinton ) think because something is presented to them, they do not need to be shared with the public. Maybe it was a mistake but I sure hope that the rock is returned to the State and not kept in the Clinton Library where you will probably have to pay a fee to see it.

    September 22, 2011 at 6:56 pm |
    • Uthor

Most sane folks know that he didn't even know it was there. In archival boxes of a bunch of junk in a random library? These days Clinton doesn't look so good; he's not healthy. Leave the man alone. He gave us all his life. He did things most of us will never do, and he was a kid from Arkansas with a dream and ambition, from a family with a single mother, just someone who got bitten by the bug, and might have just played sax in bad bands as a CPA if he hadn't had ambition. He made it happen and became the President. Most of us can't even figure out what job we want to do.

I'm just amused at the reporting. I don't think he deliberately stole a moon rock, but I wouldn't be surprised if he just indiscriminately threw everything that wasn't nailed down into a box. Knda like the guy in the goofy movies who is stealing brief cases and accidently ends up with mob millions. "Huh-huh... I though I was just taking a few paperweights!" Whenever I move out of an office, I'm pretty aware of what is mine, and what is not.

As when there is any office change, low level staffers basically are charged with packing "the office" to go to the archives. in this case the Butler Center, a part of the Little Rock library system. Most likely, a low level staffer was told to "pack everything" and just followed directions.

Now if we could find one of those hard drives that departing governor Mike Huckabee didn't have crushed, that would be news.

He didn't even know he had it. People in his position do NOT pack their own things when they move from place to place. It is always packed and unpacked by professional movers. If anyone needs to smear someone, remember that Pres. Clinton balanced the budget and significantly lowered the national debt unlike the GOB lunatics that came after and who control the House now.

Gov. Perry would be more appropriate a target with his hate speech that clearly contains ideas that are clearly gender /identity biased contrary to the Constitution and he has ordered the deaths of 400+ prisoners of which a significant number were later proven innocent beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Why is it that people who call others stupid in these comments never know the difference between "your" and "you're", or "there", "their" and "they're", or "were", "wear", "we're" and "where"? Learn English before attempting to use it for evil (or any other purpose) please.

Naw, he just stole all the Ws off the White House keyboards when he left office. Typical democrats, always whining about elections they lost fair and square.

Are you still whining about this? "Wake up and smell the cat food in your bank account."

He may have taken the moon rock. However, the story your refer to about Clinton staffers taking anything that wasn't nailed down and vandalizing the Whitehouse were descredited/debunked a long time ago as Rove/BushCheney propaganda.

        It's all a "vast right-wing conspiracy", right?

        Yes. it is...damned right -wingers.

@Victim – Um... to suggest that politicians conduct ridiculous lying smear campaigns isn't a vast either-wing conspiracy. It's just a fact.

Try reading again, and apply comprehension this time. It was found among Clinton's possessions. Nowhere in the article does it say or even imply Clinton stole it and stashed it. It simply says it was found AMONG his possessions, which is fact. While it may not have been his box it was found in, the box was among many others that belonged to Clinton.

Another fine example. Thanks for proving my point.

That's a moon rock? It looks just like a whole bunch of rocks I dug up in my back yard when I was planting a flower bed. Wacky.

I sure hope they sanitize that thing. Who knows what old Willy did with it.

I'm sure the Clinton definition of "moon" is completely different than mine.

Wow how did the whitewater investigation miss this? Maybe Republicans should start another investigation of the Clintons and spend another 50 million of the public's money, anybody seen Ken Starr.

Gee, Ha Ha, here's some basic humor theory. Humor is supposed to be funny. Yours wasn't. Also, if you have to tell people your joke was a joke by including "Ha Ha," it merely emphasizes how strikingly UNfunny your remark was...

      September 22, 2011 at 5:37 pm |
      • Steve

Sarcasm generally needs to be funny, too. Capitalizing the "UN" in "unfunny" don't help much either. And considering his visible screenname, perhaps "Ha Ha" was a signature, not a comment. But I suppose knowing "basic humor theory" simply means you haven't taken "Advanced Humor Theory" yet.
