Ten thousand years ago, a young mammoth probably got into a scuffle with a large predator, and was then apparently butchered by ancient settlers of Siberia. Both lions and humans may have been involved in its death, according to the BBC.
Today, the mammoth's remains are some of the best-preserved of their kind, thanks to the low temperatures in the area where it was discovered.
The team of scientists that are studying Yuka (the creature's nickname) estimate that the mammoth was between 2 and 3 years old at the moment of its death.
The evidence also revealed signs of human interaction with animals in the region. The expedition was financed by the Discovery Channel and the BBC.
“This is the first relatively complete mammoth carcass – that is, a body with soft tissues preserved – to show evidence of human association,” Daniel Fisher, curator and director of the University of Michigan’s Museum of Paleontology, told Discovery News.
Fisher explained that the settlers removed “parts include most of the main core mass of Yuka's body, including organs, vertebrae, ribs, associated musculature, and some of the meat from upper parts of the legs,” but the rest remained intact.
Kevin Campbell of the University of Manitoba is one of the scientists involved in the investigation, and hopes that this finding could lead to one of the most controversial bioengineering experiments: the cloning of a mammoth.
Yuka’s discovery will be broadcasted in the BBC/Discovery Channel TV show “Woolly Mammoth”, produced and directed by Tim Walker. Walker told Discovery News that it could take years or even decades to clone this extinct species.

The "invasive species" threat is directly proportional to the available-niches in the biosphere to support the organism.
A woolly Mammoth occupied the apex of temperate-zone herbivores. That relatively-narrow niche has shown declining populations throughout the Holocene, with the sole possible exception being the North American Whitetail, so it is unlikely that woolly mammoth represents a threat.
Unfortunately, the scientists also thawed out a previously-extinct unicellular gram-negative coccobacillus, which immediately re-established itself within the research labs. A real nasty one, too. In approx 12-15 years, this will mutate into an even nastier zoonotic, and will kill several billion people over the subsequent decade....
I hate it when that happens.
Oh, relax. I'm sure this time the T-virus won't nearly wipe out human existence.
Yes, enlighten us with your source, please
Let the creature rest in peace
That would be a good thing after all the raping of the earth we've done for centuries.
Easy come, easy go. But just to point to the bright side, we're immune to it already, they don't die out, they just encyst, however on the dark side, always keep your hands away from your mouth and eyes while in a hospital, and wash them often.
HneryO wrote, "...believing unknown "scientific" theories from scientists they don't know or have never heard of, although the theories change from month to month. If they'd rather believe in a big rock existing from all time that exploded from unknown reasons to create round orbs that are perfectly suspended in space..."
This really cuts to the heart of the matter. Why would people who purposefully choose to be ignorant about science, like this poster, come onto a science thread and demonstrate that ignorance? It's like these folks are proud to be ignorant, and want everyone to see it.
You really think the Big Bang (which was neither big, nor a bang) was a big rock that exploded and formed planets? Seriously?
And people wonder why the US ranks next to last in the world in understanding of math and science.
Thanks for deciphering that. I didn't get the big rock thing until you laid it out. Wow, kind of a Flintstones Big Bang! I'd love to hear his take on how the sun goes beddy-bye each night.
One slight correction though, the U.S. ranks next to last among First World nations. We still do better than, um...uh... maybe Upper Volta?
You're right Simon, I should have qualified it. I think the only "civilized" country we beat was Turkey.
Primewonk, I think you have woefully simplified the Big Bang theory, thought I do not dispute that this theory like all others are subject to strict examination. That said the Big Bang theory is so much more than a rock explosion.
Alice, if you look, you can see that I was quoting what HneryO said. He is the one who has purposefully chosen to be ignorant about science.
More scientific proof that mammoths shed their skin – a defense mechanism against the Zombie Apocalypse.
That was an awesome response. I don't think I've laughed as hard in days.. Thanks!
best reply ever :)
but people were not around then (religious sarcasm)
Thank you!! My first thought exactly.
I must have missed something. Everybody, religious or not, knows humans and mammoths coexisted.
I like the sarcasm if its in favor of the fossil record. If your favoring creationists...THEY are referring to dinosaurs. Mammoths are not dinosaurs but in fact prehistoric elephant of the Pleistocene epoch.
It's a safe bet that Sarah Palin wishes she could have shot it from her helicopter.
LOL! made my friday.
Goodone, but whenever i see her name that makes me laugh.
I just want to know – who gets all the heavy ivory?
Looks like good eatin to me, snout a lil skimmpy though.
He/she used to be a good mammoth..until it took an arrow to the knee xD
One time I saw a prehistoric teabagger by the side of the road with his arm all the way up a wooly mammoth's @ss. "Car trouble?" I asked.
A hoot. I only wish more people could understand it. But I heard old Yuka here had a Nixon/Agnew button.
It's fat and bloated and hairy with a big nose... A prehistoric Al Gore
"Nope," he said, "just checkin' the oil."
BRING THAT THING BACK TO LIFE!
Would've been nice to have an estimate of the wooly's size. Skull intact? Size? Any zippers?
Sarah, is that you?
No, Rick. It's Mom.
I can see a Mammoth in Siberia from my house.
I have seen an old book written by a Chinese lived near Siberia about 100 years ago telling about people there (Russians) from time to time discovered whole well-preserved mammoths from melted ice valley, the local hunters fed the flesh to the dogs and used the tusks and bones for other purposes....so, I think the butchering and the cutting away of the internal organs might not be done 10's of thousand ago, it might be just a hundred or so ago by some Russian hunters there...
Yeah, I think that the scientists didn't just make up the numbers. There are numerous techniques for dating, such are carbon -14.
How, exactly, are scientists supposed to use a radiometric technique to determine when something that isn't there went away?
Think of it this way... You can put your hand on the hood of a car to determine if it was driven recently. But if you see an empty parking space, you can't use that techinque to determine when the car that used to be there left, because the car is gone.
By determining the existance of rubber on pavement you could infer when the last car was present...
"But if you see an empty parking space, you can't use that techinque [sic] to determine when the car that used to be there left, because the car is gone".
Wrong! You can take an infra-red picture of the empty parking space. Because the space is cooler it will show the former shadow of the vehicle. And you can estimate when the car left by temperature difference.
I know it's "nic name" is Yuka, but whats its real name?
What would PETA say about Mammoth?
who cares about PETA ?
They would say it was cruel for the human so kill the innocent and endangered animal. And then throw flour at the archeologists.
Good one! LOL
It looks delicious.
Do you like spaghetti with real big mammoth meat balls?
I know I left my coat somewhere.
Was your coat made from Chebacca?
was he wearing a hoodie?
LET THERE BE WOOLY MAMMOTHS!
Just because you CAN clone it doesn't mean that you SHOULD.
Wait what? Mammoths are secretly carnivorous man-eaters?
Ordinarilly i would agree with you , an animal gone extinct by natural causes should be left to extinction, but in this case its very possible man was responsible for the woolies extinction, so maybe man should try and fix this mistake.
Is man not nature? Are we just a part of the animal kingdom, or aren't we?
Bringing an extinct animal back into the world is a big mistake in my opinion... Don you said that humans could have been the reason this animal became extinct... Sure lets bring it back... ONE QUESTION though.... where on earth would they live? They had a natural habitat... it's not like the world was the same when they existed.
@ Ash: Where do you draw the line? If an animal went extinct through human action 50 years ago, would it be okay to clone it? What about 100 years? 500 years? 1,000 years? 5,000 years?
The world isn't the same as it was 150 years ago, would that make it unethical to clone a quagga if we were able to?
Obviously they'd live in a zoo....and we'd put tiny saddles on them so monkeys could ride around.
Yes we are part of the animal kingdom and thus we are part of the problem. But we will be extinct ourselves and some creature..maybe from another planet might think.. "Should we revive the human race"? If they are smart, they won't.
Dear Christ..please save me from many of your followers.
Oh yes, lets PLEASE bring Palin into a discussion about the age of earth and a possible finding of a "real" mammoth. Reminder: This is also the person who created the word "Refudiate" and considers the North Koreans our allies.
What an idiot. Typical liber. Believe every movie you see (liberal producer) and every thing you read.
What an idiot. Typical right wing stooge. Believe every Fox newscast you see (right wing retardedness) and every thing you read in the Post. PS You misspelled "libber", you uneducated yahoo.
Sean burns must have been cloned from Obama. What a DAN.
Neither "liber" or "libber" are words, but the word "liberal" has only one "b".
@HWB DAN huh???
George W. Bush, the best president since Ronald Reagan. Carter? Clinton?,,,,,Buffoons.
OK, I get it now...you're being sarcastic. And I thought you were a REAL idiot, when you're just making pretend.
I'm not a liberal, but Clinton didn't lie to get us into a war we couldn't afford. Clinton left G.W. a country that was in the black, and when GW left office we were poor again. Clinton didn't deregulate the oil industry to the point that there are only 5 companies left that are relevant, and they collude to raise the price of gas (even the Saudi's said: 'it isn't us, there's plenty of oil on the market'). The Bush Presidency was THE WORST in our history – unless of course you are one of those companies that lined Karl Rove's pockets.
According to the History Channel, ancient humans would never have been able to butcher and consume a mammoth unless aliens showed them exactly how to do it. In fact, it would appear humans were barely capable of feeding themselves without putting out an eye before ancient astronauts came along.
The GEMA is much too powerful in Germany. A true fun-killer, should be abolished.
I love that movie!
The History Channel? What's that? You mean that tabloid TV station that used to talk about history?
No no no, don't you remember? The aliens took Hitler back in time and HE taught them how to do it...with the aid of some ghosts of course...
beam me up, Scottie! Let's have a BBQ! I'll bring the meat!
That looks like the Hoodie Sadam was wearing when he was found hiding in his little .
That's Andrew Breitbart, and he's only been dead a few months.
Heh heh! We know his liver will never decompose.
George Zimmerman shot him
The odds are good that there's an alien religion somewhere in this universe that's fundamentally different from all earth religions and has been around longer than man-made religions by thousands, if not millions of earth years.
Alien religion? Anyways the odds are good
You spew utter nonsense.
If your GOD is in heaven doesn't that make him alien?
You know if there really is a god he probably is an Alien and not some old dude with a big white beard living in the clouds.
That guy has a good point
My trunk shrinks when it is cold out as well.
Kinda looks like poo-poo. Are they sure it isn't poop?
Was he a member of a gang?
Mary, please turn your communcator back on, this is the captain speaking.
And those Mammoth ribs that are missing?? I bet Fred BarBQ'd them... and if you can find those rib bones, maybe you can find an intact Dino too!
Wow, we get an exciting scientific find, and the Christian m0r0ns immediately seize the opportunity to say that science is wrong. ANY Christian with a brain believes that the Earth is far more than 6,000 years old - it's only the ones of low IQ that believe in a "young Earth."
Let me put it to you this way: Carbon-14 dating is quite accurate. Carbon-14 decays at a set rate, and that rate can be measured to within a small margin of error - certainly a far smaller margin of error than 10,000 years vs. 6,000 years.
If God created fossils with "false" carbon-14 information, that means that God is telling humans a lie. Christians believe that God doesn't lie. (Don't try to claim the TOTAL BS that the great flood "messed up" this information; a flood cannot alter the carbon-14 decay rate; there is also NO EVIDENCE that this mammoth was immersed in liquid water for months, as it would have decayed in water).
So, Christians of low IQ,. which is it? Is God lying or are you just not smart enough to come up with a good story?
Conservative = m0r0n
Evidence?? How about some hard evidence from a respected source?
Geologist Dr. Steve Austin sampled basalt from the base of the Grand Canyon strata and from the lava that spilled over the edge of the canyon. By evolutionary reckoning, the latter should be a billion years younger than the basalt from the bottom. Standard laboratories analyzed the isotopes. The rubidium-strontium isochron technique suggested that the recent lava flow was 270 Ma older than the basalts beneath the Grand Canyon—an impossibility.
lol, Dr. Steve Austin the creation scientist (I hate throwing those words together)? Oh he doesn't have an axe to grind at all.
Bob the Janitor is clearly an objective observer in all of this as well.
Wasn't Steve Austin the six million dollar man ? ;)
Excellent point. Atheists will reject it for no other reason than they think you're a Christian while believing unknown "scientific" theories from scientists they don't know or have never heard of, although the theories change from month to month. If they'd rather believe in a big rock existing from all time that exploded from unknown reasons to create round orbs that are perfectly suspended in space and all life formed from nothing, I think they have bigger problems to deal with than Christians.
Yes I'm sure the samples weren't contaminated...that never happens. Also, you'd think with all these "errors" that creationists find that are supposed to indicate something wrong with the process of radiometric decay itself, instead of human error, we'd have found a way to alter the decay rates of isotopes that would give these false dates. Yet scientists have thrown everything in the book at these atoms and nothing has changed this about them. In fact Quantum mechanics itself was born out of this invariant manner of decay. Einstein's quote about god playing dice refers to it.
WOW, One whole anomolea AMAZING , you must have looked hard for that, after 20 years of STUDY and hard work I think I could fill this entire computer with data that shows how old the world is from ice cores to micro life. I know its more convienent and EASY to say GOD DID IT ALL...lol ....simpleton stay home, reality is a lot harder to uncover and it really takes an interest to truly investigate although i am certain you will enjoy EVERY OTHER invention of SCIENCE from cell phones to GPS.
From the talkorigins website An Index to Creationist Claims –
The hawaiite lava flows from the Uinkaret Plateau of the Grand Canyon are dated by pota.ssium-argon at about 1.2 million years, an age consistent with the lava flow being younger than the canyon itself. However, a Rb-Sr isochron plot of samples from the lava flow gives an age of 1.34 billion years, which is older than even the Cardenas Basalt, some of the oldest rock in the canyon. The data points are colinear, which is supposed to indicate a valid isochron. This result shows that the isochron method is invalid.
Austin, Steven A., 1992. Excessively old "ages" for Grand Canyon lava flows. Impact 224 (Feb.).
One of the requirements for isochron dating is that the samples be cogenetic, that is, that they come from materials that were isotopically ho.mogeneous (with respect to each other) when they formed. Austin's selection of samples violated this as.sumption. His five samples came from four different lava flows plus one phenocryst (which likely solidified in the magma chamber before the flow). Thus, Austin's conclusion, not the isochron method, is invalid.
Noncogenetic samples such as Austin used are sometimes used intentionally to determine the age of the common source of the samples. Austin's results confirm that the lithospheric mantle underlying the Grand Canyon (the common source for his samples) is older than the Cardenas Basalt. Geologists have known this all along.
Austin (1988) cited Brooks et al. (1976), showing Austin should have been aware that noncogenetic samples could produce an isochron for the age of their molten material's source. His misstatement of the significance of the isochron is just plain sloppy.
All you scientists out there should recall to mind that decay rate is not the only factor with regard to the reliabilty of radiometric dating. The rate probably is constant. Your past research into this field will remind you that the decay rate is measured based on the ratio of an unstable isotope (C14 in this case) in relationship to a stable one (C12 in the case of carbon dating). A critical assumption is that this ratio is itself constant. Unfortunately, there are a number of problems with that assumption that cannot be fully proven out by the scientific method. Related assumptions and potential problems include point of equilibrium, impact of cosmic rays, magnetic field, and water contamination, plus other factors. If you go back to the work of Dr Libby, you will find the assumption around equilibrium was a problem for him, but he reasoned it away. So we have to be cautious about assuming indisputable accuracy of these methods. Most scientists use radiometric dating in corroboration with other supporting evidence because the dating methods are not wholly reliable on their own. If you want to comment based on more than preconceived notions, further homework into this topic space is well advised.
And again from the talkorigins website An Index to Creationist Claims –
Carbon dating is based on the atmospheric C-14/C-12 ratio, but that ratio varies. Thus the carbon dating method is not valid.
Morris, Henry M. 1985. Scientific Creationism. Green Forest, AR: Master Books, pp. 162-166.
The variability of the C-14/C-12 ratio, and the need for calibration, has been recognized since 1969 (Dic.kin 1995, 364-366). Calibration is possible by analyzing the C-14 content of items dated by independent methods. Dendrochronology (age dating by counting tree rings) has been used to calibrate C-14/C-12 ratios back more than 11,000 years before the present (Becker and Kromer 1993; Becker et al. 1991). C-14 dating has been calibrated back more than 30,000 years by using uranium-thorium dating of corals (Bard et al. 1990; Edwards et al. 1993), to 45,000 yeas ago by using U-Th dates of glacial lake varve sediments (Kitagawa and van der Plicht 1998), and to 50,000 years ago using ocean cores from the Cariaco Basin which have been calibrated to the annual layers of the Greenland Ice Sheet (Hughen et al. 2004).
Moron he says? last I heard scientific analysis says that ICE and SNOW are water frozen at low temp. Also I can tell you as a biologist that carbon can be changed by nature at high pressure or during oxidation and if a world flood did occur as science proves (not Christians) then the amount of pressure per square inch will alter or change molecules within. Example is a Diamond. Mostly made of Carbon. Can be natural or man made. Carbon date the diamonds if you can. It's the ever changing atmosphere around it. Also Christians are not the only religion to tell about a major flood. Many world cultures tell a similar story. So as a biologist I say prove the theory as fact and it will no longer be a theory. Then we can say Darwin was wrong because his theory is a fact.
It's really sad that you lie about being a biologist. A biologist would have a basic understanding of the scientific method, and the lexicon involved. You wrote, "I say prove the theory as fact and it will no longer be a theory. Then we can say Darwin was wrong because his theory is a fact." A person who actually understands science would know that in science we don't prove things, we explain things. Proofs are for maths and ethanol. A theory never gets promoted to fact or law. Theories exist to explain sets of facts and laws.
There are no (credible) scientists who state there was a global flood, especially one 4000 years ago.
As a "biologist" perhaps you could explain to the board why, if there was a global flood that killed everyone and everything not on a boat, there are zero species that show a population bottleneck 4000 years ago?
"mostly" made of carbon? Hate to burst your bubble, but diamonds are pure carbon, and, if you truly are a biologist, you would understand the impossibility of a global flood; not that a biologist has the relevent expertise to comment on one. And there is no evidence, certainly none scientific, that points to a global flood. Many of the cultures with those myths developed them from the flooding of either the Mediterranean or the Black sea.
Why dooes anyone care what another person's beliefs are? At the end of the day, doesn't your relationship (or lack there of) with a higher being come down to YOU? Nobody can force me to believe in God over science or vice versa, I can't even force myself to blindly belive one side.
I think people should be secure in their own faith and don't try to force people to agree with your views.
Did you ever hear of torture?
Just clone the thing already and bring back the Dodo bird too!
The Dodo Birds are already here. Check out the GOP slate and especially Palin and Bachman... Oh, and anyone else who would vote for them...
I make sure to check out Palin and Bachmann every time they're on tv.
Don't forget about "Take away all women's rights" Santorum.
Please don't insult dodo birds.
Let me guess, Noah didn't make the door of the Ark big enough for the poor mammoth. Not to mention the dinosaurs.
Look everyone – A self absorbed fanatical atheist! Cool.
Yeah, too bad he's RIGHT though.... sucks, huh?
look everyone: a fanatical zealot, trapped in a factual posting, escaping the only way they know how.. Diversion
Did you ever think that perhaps the mammoths on the ark were babies? Who said all the animals were full sized?
According to your bible, from the time the flood started until the animals walked off was 370 days.
Noah would have had several "kinds" of animals that are obligate carnivores. Thes animals MUST eat meat, or they die. In fact some "kinds" of obligate carnivores, like felines, only eat plant material as an emetic.
Question 1 – What did the obligate carnivores eat for the year they were on the boat?
All the arable land has been underwater for a year – a year of incredible water pressure, miles of silt, and brackish (salty) water. It would take many generations to re-establish a stable vegetation pattern to allow the herbivores to eat. And then numerous additional generations for the herbivores to reach a population density high enough for the carnivores to exist.
Question 2 – What did the herbivores eat for the generations it took to stabilize the ecosystem?
Question 3 – What did the carnivores eat while waiting for the herbivore populations to stabilize?
We'll get to the harder questions involving physics and molecular DNA after you answer these.
that's so sad. Would people stop making fun of woowie mammuth, please?
they should clone that little mamoth and they should clone the best-preserved remains of """"smilodon pupulator""""" from argentina WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY WAITING FOR ?????
OK, screw that political BS. Can't we all agree it looks like ALF???!!!???
that is awesome. Ha!
Phuk, you're old.
This is the real thing. Also, just because you can't see God or Jesus doesn't mean that they don't exist. I don't hate anyone, but no one here is pushing religion you. It's up to you to accept it or not. In the end, you will be held accountable for your actions. The reason so many you don't believe is that your blind and like living the way do. It's not about you. Look at the bigger picture. I'm just sayin...
Exactly! Just because you can't see Santa, the tooth fairy, or the giant tea pot behind the sun doesn't mean they don't exist. I'd rather not believe in religion. Living in a celestial dictatorship is just not for me.
this is why a lot of people go to hell....sad....
if by "hell" you mean, down the gullet of hungry worms, you may have a point. Hell is just another fantasy place written about in the same farcical book that the other, more fun, place is from. Your myth holds no retribution for anyone, sorry.
Mj, unfortunately it isn't so easy to choose to believe in something. People cant choose to believe in god or hell any more than you could choose to not believe in them. It is also so annoying how hypocritical so many "religious" people are including you. Doesn't the bible say not to judge? Yet here you are stating that someone is going to go to hell for their beliefs. If you were truly a faithful christian person and not a hypocrite then you wouldn't even think that. So that probably means you are going to hell for going against the teachings of Christianity along with 99% of your fellow Christians for this and all of the other hypocritical practices they partake in. It isn't for you to judge other people is it?
Dont worry about the religious people, science has no chose but to go where the facts lead us, religious people just rewrite there beliefs to conform to modern facts and beliefs, like marriage, they took out THOU SHALL OBEY, I got a divorce :)
Just because you cannot see Fairies and Zeus does not mean they don't exist. In the end you will be held accountable (threat of hellfire so you better listen or its a frickasee BBQ of your flesh for eternity..just warning you). The bigger picture is that you should read the bible and realize that god is one who believes in collective justice which means he cannot comprehend justice. Cain and King David murder and yet no real punishment. A man picks up sticks on the sabbath or another tries to prevent the Ark of the Covenant from falling and they both are sentenced to death. Slavery, yes please. The most minor infringement = death sentence. Even Jesus says he comes not to bring peace but the sword. For those who do not want him as king, they should be slayed before him. If this is morality, then you can shove it and put it in the dustbin of history along with all the other long forgotten gods. We can do better than this.
People who believe in God have made it hell for everyone else. Whether you're a christian or Mormon or Muslim. It's all the same BS.
Steve, OK man, you have convenced me, now then, lets see you do one thing better.....I think as I get it....you forgot the message, why do you read from that which has passed away and attempt to make it law today.....missed that one too huh ? like so many today....make it up as you go...so why are you waisting your time here.....who you gonna call on when you'r dieing ? your mama ? You antichrist's are not going to have a good day after that, I have seen several men die, not one of them was quite and none were Christians....they went into thier night screaming however faintly as they could. I figure a workman is worthy of thier hire, if a person wants to go to hell, have at it. You all have heard the word and understand it.
Jesus is my car insurance.
Jesus built my hot rod.
Jesus mows my lawn every Thursday, if it's not raining...
mb2010a I nearly spit up my coffee! lmbo!
which god? there have been thousands of them.. you know the difference between a religion and a myth? a religion is a myth currently believed.
See JC thats where most "believers" lose people..by stating a consequence. Just live and let live. And stop trying to prosecute the people of the world who may choose not to believe.
It's one of the biggest questions I have about "Godly" people... Since I believe in A God... and since it is alot smarter than anyone on this planet..enough to slam atoms and cause a Big Bang...then it probably doesn't need our help to defend itself.
This mammoth's hair is almost as nice as my flowing mane.
Oh no, who killed Snuffy?!
I can see the resemblance to George Burns.
It looks so snobbish.
So what are you going to do when you bring back this creature through cloning, and attached to it is a damned virus, hidden in the many strands of dna that you have yet to understand... Keep Playing God with your peanut brains and Its going to take A God to save Us from the monster that you unleash...
A God? I thought there was ONLY one God? Talk about peanut brains.
we lived along side these creatures for thousands of years, we have NEVER set foot next to one of your "gods". I vote the animal in and your myth out... we should stop cloning zealots.
Well said Don.
Mammoth burgers anyone? Talk about the Paleo-diet! Man that would be weird to order mammoth meat at a restaurant one day...also think about mammoth ranches in prairies across the world. Welcome to the 21st century CE and the 21,000 century BCE at the same time!
Oh, The century of 21,000 BCE is also probably even further back before mammoths evolved, but put in any number that works and I start to wonder if we will create "Pleistocene Park" or the like IN THE FUTURE...numbers and geologic history aside, are we going into the future by bringing a whole lot of the past back...?
Yeah right. Someone just found the Snuffleupagus costume.
or its james mom
Dude. What's with the ad hominem?
CLONE! Clone clone!!!
Two things about this disturb me... 1. So many people related this to the right-wing politicians running for POTUS and their assertion that the earth is less than 6000 years old. Folks – this is archeology and not related to politics. 2. My very first thought when I reviewed this article was about right-wing politicians running for POTUS and their assertion that the earth is less than 6000 years old.
You know this is not bad at all. what it disturbs or rather surprises me is that they did not say 10,000 millions years. What is a estimation error of 4k years when they play with millions and billions of years like is nothing, (i.e. "this existted between 200 and 250 millions years ago")
PS. I believe that the earth is very young, but the cataclism during the great flood induced an age factor to the earth that the "scientists" cannot or would not count for.
Dan, you like many before you are trying to make up stories to cover for the lies that your fundamentalists preachers told you. give it up, make them grow up. The Bible is a book of metaphors, it is not a history book.
Please, that is your final answer.
So you agree the evidence (all of it) supports an Earth that is 4.54 billion years old but you think the evidence has been corrupted by "a great flood" that made the young Earth seem old? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Let's look at evidence, then assert that some unsupported occurrence changed the evidence to make it seem that way. How could we ever progress as a species when your first instinct is to see evidence as corrupted and unreliable? You perform a medical study and collect your results and then what? Assume it was changed by some unknown process and make up a story to explain why your data is flawed despite a total lack of evidence to support this? Why would you think the evidence must be wrong? Let me guess, because some book says so. Though you lack any evidence that this book is anything more than a collection of fantasy tales. You ignore heaps and heaps of well supported scientific evidence to rely on historical hearsay and probably "personal experience".
There never was any great flood. There is no evidence of this. There is no layer of dead animals at one particular geological strata. If there was a flood, we would have a layer of skeletons from every animal. There isn't enough space on this comment section to refute the global flood idea. It never happened.
Of course I have made numerous assumptions about your beliefs so I apologize if I've overreached. I don't mean to be cruel and I'm not writing this in anger. I simply feel that this type of thinking, this ignoring of testable scientific evidence is very dangerous and harmful to our society and our future.
As a person with a long Christian education, I try to use theology and the bible for understanding the principles of a good life – honesty, compassion, faithfulness, generosity, peace, wisdom, fairness, etc. That is what 'God' wants youto focus on. Using the bible for other purposes – like establishing the age of a planet, is stupid and is not what Jesus intended. Get a clue.
I see myself as a spiritual person and believe in a higher power...I myself think the world is young only compared to the age of the universe..4-6 thousand years old..I believe not...that would just not make sense. I believe in the bible too, but a book of reasoning, of love, faith, ways to treat your fellow man, a book of wisdom, but literal word..no..If you use it only as history and only literally then you have missed the point. Why do we always strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. We can believe in a God...who ever that may be for each person and believe in science to.
Lies such as the statements I had to endure during my time growing up in a christian house, such as the devil put dinosaur bones in the ground to deceive us. If that is the case then what does that make a christian who drives a gas vehicle? If dinosaurs are the devil then so is oil right? and if oil is then its refined products are too? So that means every time you drive to church you are driving with the devil in your gas tank?
We believe that you are an idiot. When your little book of fairy tales is put up against real and tangible proof there is always some "twist" that "man can't understand". Plain and simple is that there is no gawd and that the planet is billions of years old and that man goes back millions of years.
Science is about facts, we are not perfcet and young in tech. but we do not alter the facts to get results we WISH for. In time we will have many more answers and find life in space.
I saw this on the BBC site yesterday (they have a cool video up, too, FYI). The fur on that thing is amazing! It must have been a beautiful animal in life.
wonder if romney believes in dinosaurs?
Only ones that wore magic panties.
the "creation museum" shows people riding on dinosaurs and farming with them, These people believe whatever the grilled cheese sandwich tells them, as long as some fictional character is burnt into it.
Amazing seeing something that only 800 years ago roamed the earth next to Jesus and dinosaurs. Truly God gives us many miracles.
lay off the drugs buddy
I didn't know that Jesus or Dino's were around 800 years ago? where you getting your info Godboy?
where did you get 800 years ago?? did you read the article?? it said 10,000 years ago.....
this is so obviously fake!
as all bible thumpers know, including romney and gwb...the earth was created only 6000 years ago!!!!!
so, based on that-this is fake!
Sheesh, you people really need to hone your sarcasm detection skills!
brutal. 800 years ago??? LOL. should have known by the users name it was going to be a stupid comment. the Earth is older than 6000 years. humans will look back at people like that and think "Whoa! i cant believe that some people were that brainwashed!" LEARN HISTORY!!! HAVE AN OPEN MIND AN STOP BLINDLY BELIEVING IN THINGS THAT DON'T MAKE SENSE!!! it's freedom of religion, not freedom to push your religion on everyone else... they forget that most of the time. It scares me to read most of these comments on cnn.com where all almost all of them have no idea about anything except "god" this and "jesus" that. brutal....
all people who don't believe in god or jesus wil go to hell...... repent and be saved....
Read the Bible. The only people that are going to Hell are those who believe the Jesus is GOD.
Great...bring religion in to this. You're just as annoying as overbearing Christians. Go home.
I'm not sure if I should scold you for you ignorance of Christianity or your ignorance of history.
I'm sorry but this looks way to fake!
fake is the shroud of turin. this is as real as it gets.
Why? have you seen the real thing?
Well the archeologists who date the specimen as 10,000 years old have graduate degrees in their scientific fields. You, on the other hand, didn't care enough in school to learn the difference between "to" and "too," so your opinion does not count as much in any sort of debate beyond the level of "Which flavor of Kool-Aid tastes best?" or "Would Superman beat Batman in a fight?"
way too good deductive logic :)
This sight needs a "like" link for comments!
Clone it! I want to take my kids to the zoo and say "We didn't have those back in my day" and then I'll sound really old.
I wonder if their is clonable material. If so we should for sure. I'm sure a modern day elephant could be the mother.
There not their... Typo
lol nice save....the grammar nazis would of pounced on you like a fat kid on a cupcake.
Marine: It's "would HAVE pounced" not "would OF pounced."
Good Gawd, who needs tv when we have all of you to entertain us! ;o)
Thank you for that... I needed that laugh... seriously.
Seriously?? You people are wanting to clone this animal to eat it??? Because we are not killing enough animals off right now. I'm not some angry vegitarian or anything, but to bring an animal back just to put it in the zoo or to kill and eat it is just morally wrong. Humans absolutely disgust me.
Eat a f***ing poptart and stop b**ching. You have it pretty easy right now.
i'm not saying your point isn't valid, but one fully grown mammoth would offer more meat that a group of cows. I'm not saying its ethical, but breeding mammoths for the purpose of food would offer us a vast and untapped source of new food and could make a dent in the number of people who go hungry every year because of a shortage of available food.
way too many humans on this planet
People wouldn't raise mammoths for food for the same reasons they don't raise elephants for food. They require too much food for the amount of return. More likley some enterprising individuals would slaughter them for their ivory and fur and let the rest go to waste.
Scarcity is a lie. We have the technology now to feed everyone on the planet now and 500 years from now (or more). We just don't use it because it "costs to much" which creates scarcity and starvation. Welcome to the dark ages of the modern era where money is driving humans to extinction just like we drove these poor animals.
Either way, I appreciate and respect your comment =)
We're already being fed enough genetically engineered foods as it is, adding CLONE meat to our diets...I don't even want to know what goes in to that. And how do you even know the mammoth would taste good? \
There is ample food on the planet. The problem isn't lack of food, it's a problem of logistical distribution.
Humans are omnivores, mammoths make for a great amount of food.
Poptarts do not have the necessary protein and vitamins that you need to survive, like it or not our bodies are made to consume meat.
I haven't eaten meat–or any other animal product, for that matter, no eggs, no milk, nothing–in about two decades. Gosh, how is it that I have survived, with no health problems at all?
actually Paul, you have not. you are either lying on purpose or do not know that you are eating animal product but you can NOT cut it completely out of your diet and be healthy, ask ANY doctor. and that is who's opinion counts, not your "feelings" The sharp teeth in your mouth are not for gnashing broccoli
Actually, Don, my doctor recommended I not eat meat more than thirty years ago and I'd bet I'm healthier than you. Many Buddhists, Hindus and ethicists enjoy a cruelty-free and healthy long life.
Exactly what part of this article makes you believe that scientists want to clone a mammoth to eat it? Did you read the article?
I say that in regards to the other comments made.
mammoth burgers are awesome
Considering over 60% of people in this country are overweight or obese, we really need more food? Bringing back this animal to be a food source sounds asinine.
Our country might have an obesity issue, but there are plenty of countries that would benefit from the amount of meat Mammoths could supply.
which country? the world is better fed today than it ever has been in history and people who are starving like the Somalis , food can't get to them because of politics. Most humans need clean water and vaccinations not more meat.
Your knowledge of the world is laughable if you think that.
Funny I was thinking the same thing about you, completely clueless. The cost of cloning extinct animals as a food source would be astronomical and suggesting it is idiotic.
We can't raise Mammoth to eat for the same reason we can't raise Elephants to eat. The amount of resources needed to raise an elephant exceeds the amount of food you get from it, by a great deal. They're a slow-growing animal that eats their body weight in vegetation in a short time.
That was going to be my next points Heliocracy if he came back. The costs would never make sense and even if they were a food source, the cost would be so high to produce that meat, only the richest people would be able to buy it and it would be a delicacy. It would be out of reach for poor starving people.
They are overweight because of the wrong kind of food not too much food.
Keith that is the smartest comment on this entire article. We are poisoning our bodies eating hormones, false meats, and empty carbohydrates.
Also, the people of the world are starving, not just Somalians. We are overpopulated. But most importantly and I'm not quite sure why no one has yet to mention this but it is time we stop using fossil fuels for EVERYTHING. We could switch to pure hemp products tomorrow and be far better off and never know the switch was made. Why don't we, you might ask? because politics are run by corporations who have way too much invested in the use of inferior products; paper, fuel, clothing, plastics, even houses could be made of hemp products.
Mmmmmm, mammoth! And beer!
You are definitely not a christian. If you were then you would have paid a little more attention to the part of the bible that says animals have been put here to eat...
No more time wasting or excuses, give us cloned mammoths NOW!
Ignorant CNN, correct your article, the earth is 6,000 years old max.
what facts back your statement. anyone can write a book.
psst psst jesus NEVER wrote anything!
Psst...Jesus never existed and is a figment of someone's imagination.
very good one.
Thank you for showing everyone a perfect example of anti-religious, elitist, bigots.
your religion is a con job brother
anti religious = pro thought
The poachers are saying, "Great idea ! ".......lol
Did Jesus ride those too?
You mean Sarah Palin, I presume?
They're extinct because people killed even the young, healthy ones. Nobody even then wanted to hear that their habits were not sustainable.
Probably not just even, it makes more sense they preferred to kill babies. The full grown ones would have been a bigger challenge and they would have risked death. And yeah it wasn't too bright to wipe out their resources, those humans either died or had to move to another area. Humans never change.
Really? You know why they went extinct? Have you done scientific research on this?
Or are you just blathering about something you know absolutely nothing about?
umm yes Gregory, We DO actually know that WE hunted them to extinction.. we also know that we hunted buffalo herds in much the same manner and we know we hunted eastern mountain lion the same way.. Amazing that humans know what their ancestors did, isnt it?
Don, you sir are the reason cnn needs a Like button.
There appears to be no skull or skeletal structure. Just like "Bigfoot" in the freezer of some guys who claimed to have found Bigfoot dead in southeast US. The baby mamoth was "apparently butchered by ancient settlers" – more like a zipper or velcro opening – stone tools would not make an even cut.
Happy Belated April Fool's Day folks!!!!
Actually I've used stone knives...they cut nearly as clean as a surgical scalpel...I was pretty amazed as like you still are, I was uneducated by facts. The difference is I woke up...you're still sleeping
Nonsense. A clean cut requires only a sharp edge. It doesn't matter if that edge is made of ultra-modern ceramics, high-carbon steel, or chipped flint or obsidian tools.
Clearly, you've never seen how sharp a flint knife can be.
So sorry I offended you and your formal cutlery with my reference to stone tools. Clearly, you are the expert on how they got the head(skull) out its butt!!!
Obviously Mr. No Bones About It has seen many, many 10,000 year old baby wooly mammoths and can spot a fake sitting behind his computer.
Just like Bigfoot in the freezer. Try a new thing called "Google" you can read all about it.
@No Bones: You are basing your counterpoint on Google? We're done here...move along..nothing to see.
Good story about a nice find and a bunch of morons have to bring in politics and religion. Please, just go away.
Seems to happen for pretty much every science article on the lightyears blog. Sad.
Yes unfortunately, this is about what I expected to see in the user comments.
Mammoth burgers finger licking good! Only kidding.
Ha! I planted that there on one of my trips to Vladivostok!!!
Even at that great age it still makes me sad. The poor little guy looks like he's doing a submissive roll, begging for his life. As much as I think it's wrong to clone an animal that has no place in the modern world, I would sure love to see a live one.
I agree, it's hard to see any poor creature that died in such a way...nature can be so brutal!
It was really young, just a baby. Humans probably hunted mostly young ones which had a hand in their extinction.
libs will try to clone it and make some more democrat voters. libs are a joke
An idiot abroad i suppose..I'm a lib and thinking of marketing mammoth burgers you dolt..you don't know enough other than fox news..l
You Neocons are just so darned cute, I want to pinch your cheeks!
actually they have cemeteries full of voters, no reason to clone things back to life.
It takes a real brain-dead imbecile to turn this article into something political. Just stfu. Idiot.
some libs are fools, but almost all repubs are morons
looks like a democrat voter after obama gets crushed in the november election. libs are a total joke
"Libs are a joke." Oh, such mordant and trenchant wit. You really know how to frame a logical and valid argument. But then again, that's not surprising since most Tea Party types think and reproduce with their sphincters. If there ever was a best part of you, it ran down your mother's legs. Mammoths aren't extinct, they're the symbol of the plutocratic theism that is the modern Republican Party. If being a "lib" makes me the exact opposite of everything you are and believe in, then it makes me proud and sure that I am doing something so very right.
Is it that time of month? You seem cranky.
LOL too funny
hahaha.... You are right and the TeaParty Def thinks this story is made up because it would have taken place 4000 years before the Earth was here...
I love to lick stuff running down mother's legs. AnybodybutObama 2012 we gave black people a chance and they messed it up like always.
Ok, and all those white guys before him did such an awesome job...you're a racist moron. Go back to your trailer, drink some booze, beat your wife and kids and blame black people for your failures. Sound about right?
Obama is gonna crush the Grand Old Pedophile paty's pretty boy Mittens....Even Gallup shows Obama gaining the important votes...working independant white voters...but heep drinking the Tea Monkey Kool-Aid LMFAO!!!
only a die hard GOPerino would be so blind!
obama will win by a landlside
and by the largest margin ever in a presidential contest
to not see this is stupidity personified
i am a hard core liberal but am no fan of obama
in fact, i wish he wasnt our choice for dems
but he will win and by a monster percentage!
first of all there's no way Obama wins in a landslide. That being said, unfortunately, I do believe Obama will win the nomination and continue shifting our country further and further into socialism. Here's where my opinion comes in, the longer Obama is our president, and the longer 'democrats' continue believing they are truly liberal, the longer I will liberally vomit everywhere. Why do you think Republicans are now the 'conservative' party? because they, like the entire continent of Europe, circa 1750 realized what a country needs to do in terms of regulating and taxing their people. It is not the governments job to do any of the things they are currently doing; Social services are in place for lazy people who were brought in to this world by even lazier people who think the government should support them and their 10 babies. Look, my point is, a smaller government leads to more opportunities for everyone. Sure, you may be sick of the rich '1%' making money and exploiting poverty stricken countries for low wage labor, but now you have a government in place that is taking money that could have been used on wages here in our country and using it to support every crack head with 8 kids and no chance of ever getting a job. There's a reason Darwin's theories on survival have been applied to humanity, it's because they're ACCURATE and TRUE. Some people were brought into this world with no chance of succeeding, and are now a tax burden on us all. So thank you, f**king liberals.
More "scientific" fiction. No way possible this is a mammoth carcass. Too small to be a mammoth even if a new-born. But I'm sure some gullible politician granted some research money to it's study.
John, let's cut to the chase, you're a moron. Plain and simple, with simple being the operative. I won't even attempt to argue with anyone as imbecilic as you. Go away!
Too late, you already did.
Always funny how those who don't believe in science, always try to use science to justify their fairy tales.
Shame those scientists wasted all their time and money on a serious education when they coulda just asked you.
So John, did they dig you out of the ice, too? Familiar with mammoths?
Mammoths lived in a harsh environment, where food would be scarce for much of the year. Babies would be born smaller than modern elephants are, and growth would be slower.
There is very reliable way to gauge the age of an elephant (or a mammoth): the teeth.
Athena, Gracko, May I Take Your Order, Fiona,
you are missing the point here – JohnM knows what he is talking about. he is a Neanderthal, after all. hell, if he wasn't there personally, he probably has a cave drqwing handed down through his family showing one of his ancestors killing this poor beast.
Apparently John didn’t read the story because it states point blank that the Discovery Channel paid for this...
Are you just a dumb A s s on the internet or do you do it all the time?
Alf ??? No!!
I can think of 2 good reasons not to clone a mammoth. First where would they live that they would not be running thru somebodys yard & getting shot at or poisoned. You can't bring bring it back to life just to put it in a zoo. That is wrong. Second to bring something back to life that would have no natural predators (except humans) would be as good an idea as importing ivy & kudzo was however many years ago. At first it was THE answer to erosion in the south & it does ok as pasture for cattle but at what cost. Don't clone a mammoth. It is an invitation to trouble.
I say bring on the trouble. Humans have it way too soft now. People are overweight and there are way too many liberal types asking for handouts. Your average person that goes to college and into the work force is suffering from physical inactivity and inertia. We need animals that will challenge the average joe. If he has to fight for his life and meat he or she will will really appreciate life and the freedoms we have here in America.
The intent is obviously not to clone a bunch of them and put them in the wild
Are you kidding me? Clone that bad boy..do you know how many years we have gone without mammoth meat...oh mammoth burgers and ribs..oh my god is going to taste awesome! ..yea.
We should bring it back and then say "I'm sorry for making you extinct."
Kudzu proved to be ineffective as a deterrent to soil erosion.
so that's what you took from this comment? no where in there did this person say kudzu was a success. they were proving their point that bringing in something with no natural predator is a terrible idea...much like importing burmese pythons to the state of Florida then releasing them in the everglades. nothing kills them, they're reproducing like wild and they're destroying native vegetation and stealing resources from other predators, effectively tipping the entire ecosystem into chaos.
If they clone it we will still be save if they clone Chuck Norris first
At least from what I remember from my childrens' books, those guys were a lot bigger. Judging by the parque floors around it, it looks no bigger than 3-4 ft in length ... and at 2-3 years old?? Anyway, I hope they figure out how to clone it so I can go mammoth hunting .... the version that doesn't include fat chicks that is ...
Mention od "fat chicks" means you are alone.... & can see why.
Very true, that.
You can't take guys like Mike too seriously. Particularly when he claims it's what he remembers from his children's books. Clearly he (a) doesn't remember too much any more and (b) he's bragging that at one time he was able to read. Senility and ego are a dreadful mix.
If you read above the level of children's books, you would know that the last mammoths were much smaller than the earlier ones.
If you think about it, humans back then killed baby/young mammoths mostly. A large one would have risked death.
And then 10 years later global warming kills the mammoths again.
See.....this is what happens when yu dont brush yo teeths
It kinda looks like my Auntee Laqueeseses
clone them so we can have mammoth jackets!
There should have been something in the photo to give a sense of the relative size of the thing.
There are floor tiles visible. Usually the tiles are one foot square. If so this carcass looks to be about 13 feet long or so.
there is scale, look at the floor tiles
Anyone else see the dog peeking out from under the table? Missing flesh- hmmmmmm...
I'm lovin it!
I wonder if they'll be any arrests.
Amazing find. Put me in with the group who fantasizes about cloning one.
Toy elephant bought at Kmart
My new reason to live is to someday hunt woolly mammoth, but not with guns. I mean, it would be totally organic, I'd get a spear or maybe a saber-tooth lion's big tooth... completely make it a fair fight.
You are my hero.
The other white meat?
When a regular present-day elephant sees a cloned wooly mammoth walking around, he will think: "Wow, do I screw it or fight it".
I don't think elephants would be able to reproduce with mammoths. They are way too reproductively isolated.
I bet the elephant would say, "Get a haircut you hippy!"
Must have been what your dad thought when he first saw your mom.
That followed by "so easy, a caveman could do it."
I only hope they clone a mammoth in my lifetime. I have been in awe of them since doing a project on them in grade three.
I bet he'd say, "Get a haircut you hippy!"
tastes like chicken!
Didn't they already find a baby mammoth frozen somewhere?
cloning the mammoth is up there with all the other things i have herd of as a kid, flying cars, hover boards, invisibilty, moon colony, personal rocket packs,x ray vision, robot slaves...and going the speed of light...Anyway if we were to clone the mammoth the republicans would stop it because it was against the bible, you know our nations most sacred text.
Ummm you know they have already successfully cloned sheep, and I am willing to bet they are cloning a lot more that we just havent been told about because of the poor public reaction it would cause. Don't be a fool, we have the technology and if they wanted they could easily clone a mammoth.
I'd like to see Rick Santorum fight a woolly mammoth to end the whole creationism debate once and for all.
What the world l does the Bible have to do with cloning a mammoth. I am a republican and a Christian and see no problem with that. You are confusing humans with animals. Us Christians make a distinction between them.
Republicans will tell you that it doesn't exist because it's 4,000 years older than the earth.
Is that Chewbacca?
If we clone this thing we could eat it and have enough to feed Somolia. I'm surprised the US government isn't investing more of our money on this.
We have nearly wiped out all elephants on earth and many other animals. Why is it so intriguing to bring a species back as we eradicate 100s of others.
Ur missing his point... it could be a food source so it could be brought back as a domesticated farm animal to sustain life. Animals have been discovered and gone extinct long before humans took over... Our recorded history is only but a blink of an eye on the timeline of earth.
Bring it back so it can be exploited? nah, keep the species extinct then. Human greed is so out of control it's probably for the best.
"If we clone this thing we could eat it and have enough to feed Somolia."
Humankind long ago cracked the nut of how to take two animals and produce a third. I can draw a crude diagram of how this works if you like.
Anyway, the problem is that once we have the animal we have to feed it... our food... so that we can get some food.
"I'm surprised the US government isn't investing more of our money on this."
I can't think of a sufficiently sarcastic reply.
Thank god (well, not really) someone else thought his suggestion was idiotic
Don't believe corrupt media, this is Chubacca
It's spelled CHEWBACCA .
It's only a matter of time before we see them at zoos. I for one would pay to see it.
No problem! I have one living in my back yard and becoming a real pest. It's eaten everything in my gardin and started chasing my dogs, chickens, and even me.
Call me and we'll set up a time and cost.
The nucleotide sequences will have to be analyzed before synthetic cell mitosis could be attempted, only 1% of clone attempts are truly successful, still its worth exploring the cloning of a wooly mammoth i think.
It feels taboo, but really, I have not yet figured out what the harm could be.
....... or the benefit.
I agree. If they are successful in gleaning any useful DNA from the Wooly Mammoth and perhaps extracting DNA from a mosquito imbedded for thousands of years in a piece of Amber, and then splice the genetic codes, can you imagine the result? One very large and hairy bloodsucker. Oh wait..we already have the Kardashians! Never mind!
Good one! :-)
Synthetic cell mitosis? I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist. Also, quote,"only 1% of clone attempts are truly successful". I didn't know they successfully cloned a mammoth. lolz
Next up Jurassic Park for REAL
next what ? grey aliens cloning mammoths?
Why Not ?
10,000 years ago? Wait a minute, according to the Palin and Santorum supporters the Earth is only 6,000 years old.
The Mammoth was obviously walking through a gated cave with a hoodie and a bag of Skittles when he unfortunately encountered a cave watchman.
I love it! Thank you for making me laugh out loud! :)
Ummmm the earth is like 4.6 billion years old. DUH!
How's that Steve? The burn rate of the sun makes it impossible for earth to be in existence billions of years ago. It would be too close to the sun to sustain itself, let alone life. Don't believe everything you read from atheists and eggheads – they all live in theories.
Satan lies! Don't believe in science, duh!
ok theres no way this thing is 10000 years old. Ive had hamburger unknowingly in the freezer for 3 years. It looks like a lump of coal.
That's what pink slime looks like after 3 years....
So you're saying this Woolly Mammoth died 1-2 years ago? Get a life, dude!
..... Earth years or Light years? Gotta be accurate here, donchno!
That's your fridge's freeze/thaw cycle at work Jimmy. Siberia hasn't gone through one of those in the last 10,000 years, much less a few times a week.
lol, Santa Claus would know first hand.
You're comparing your freezer that is temperature controlled to far below freezing frigid natural temperatures in an environment not tampered with by humans? You're a fool.
I hope they do clone it. It would be an amazing step for science as well as many other fields. I thought they were already working on cloning one though. Didn't they find a full sized one frozen in the ice somewhere a few years ago?
People have talked about cloning mammoths since I was a kid (and that was a long time ago). The idea, I think, was to remove a nucleus from a somatic cell, plug it into an elephant's ovum, and let the elephant carry it to term.
That would be sweet.
Ok, my secret is out. I'm a clone except nobody knows it but me. And now youse guys and gals. Gotta ask you all to keep it a secret, please. Surely don't want everybody to know!
You just wait. It might just turn out that mammoths were interstellar aliens that came to earth 10,000 years ago. And only by allying with the lions were we able to wipe them off the face of the earth. But of course soon after that, we turned on lions with the help of domesticated dogs, creating the evolutionary war between cats and dogs.
I think there was one found in Siberia by hungry Russians. They ate it.
