A set of giant rocket engines that once propelled astronauts to space have now been recovered from the icy depths of the Atlantic, say a team of researchers led by Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos four decades after they splashed into the ocean.
“What an incredible adventure,” Bezos posted on his website from onboard his recovery ship off the Florida coast.
“We found so much,” the billionaire adventurer says. “We’ve seen an underwater wonderland – an incredible sculpture garden of twisted F-1 engines that tells the story of a fiery and violent end, one that serves testament to the Apollo program.”
Photos show workers pulling the rusty rocket parts the size of a small car from 14,000 feet down up to the deck of the boat.
F-1 engines powered the Saturn V rocket carrying Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, along with other space shots. But the engines were ejected after takeoff and considered destroyed or lost forever.
Bezos said in 2012 that he planned to recover those specific engines. However, he noted in his most recent update, "Many of the original serial numbers are missing or partially missing, which is going to make mission identification difficult. We might see more during restoration."
Each of the engines weighs nearly 9 tons, and they came in a cluster of five. They provided 32 million horsepower by burning 6,000 pounds of fuel every second, and the five together put the largest rocket in history 38 miles up in under three minutes.
After doing their work, the rockets plummeted into the ocean at 5,000 miles per hour, where they have been undiscovered for four decades until Bezos found them using sophisticated sonar and digging for clues through history.
Robert Pearlman, a space memorabilia expert who runs CollectSpace.com calls the discovery “the space enthusiast equivalent of raising the Titanic.”
Pearlman said there were a total of 65 of these engines launched but warned that if the serial numbers can’t be found on the rockets as Bezos indicates, it may be impossible to authenticate which actual mission they were used for.
Bezos said that watching that original mission as a 5-year-old in 1969 inspired him to dream big, and now he wants to undertake the huge challenge of pulling the engines up.
It was even a bit like a space expedition, the e-commerce titan says.
“The buoyancy of the ROVs looks every bit like microgravity. The blackness of the horizon. The gray and colorless ocean floor. Only the occasional deep sea fish broke the illusion.”
The Saturn V engines could be priceless historically, but hard to put a cash value on. Pearlman noted that the highest price paid for a piece of space memorabilia was $2 million, paid by a Russian investor for a Soviet-era Vostok rocket.
"F1 Components have sold for a few hundred to thousands of dollars, but they were all spare parts for that never flew,” says Pearlman.
But profits don't seem to be behind Bezos' quest to find the F-1 engines. The rocket engines remain property of NASA and the U.S. government, and Bezos has indicated that he would like to pull the engines to the surface and then have NASA put them on display at a museum in Seattle.
Pearlman says he’ll be the first in line to see them on display.
“I am just encouraged that Bezos has indicated that he’d like to display these in their current twisted and beautiful shape and not try to bang all the dents and history out of them.”

hey there and thank you for your information ? I've definitely picked up something new from proper here. I did alternatively expertise some technical issues the usage of this site, since I skilled to reload the web site a lot of instances prior to I could get it to load correctly. I were brooding about if your web hosting is OK? Now not that I am complaining, but sluggish loading cases times will sometimes impact your placement in google and could harm your high-quality score if ads and marketing with Adwords. Anyway I am adding this RSS to my e-mail and can glance out for a lot extra of your respective interesting content. Make sure you update this again very soon..
Sebastian. I can see what your saying... Irene`s blog is flabbergasting... last saturday I got a great new Saab 99 Turbo since I been bringin in $4002 this – four weeks past and would you believe, ten thousand last-month. with-out any question its the most comfortable work I've had. I started this 3 months ago and straight away began to earn more than $85 per-hr. I follow the details here,,........... BIT40. ℂOℳ
I think space stuff is cool. I sure don't want to go up there though. Looks scary to me.
Me too. Maybe when I was younger. I'm an old codger now. Getting out if bed is high enough for me.
I collect Apollo memorabilia. The Mercury and Apollo projects were amazing. Some of the stuff is super expensive though. I have the full sized Dragon mfg Buzz Aldrin and one of the ultra nice smithsonian numbered space capsules. I'm a nerd or the space programs.
how much ?
As the United Sates of America we SHOULD be putting as many dollars toward education and space as we are currently putting toward war. However billionaires can make more money finding ways of killing people than they can putting newly developed technologies in use that one day may actually save the planet, find and mine new resources, etc. If North Korea can put up a rocket we should be landing a man on mars. But instead of leading by example we lead by greed "Mitt" and war "McCain" and then wonder why we have enemies. BTW – News flash – If there was a god he left this place a very long time ago and has NEVER looked back. So we had better figure things out for ourselves. That is called preparing for the long haul for our children. Not giving up and praying for the end of times.
Spare the comments, I don't read them anyway :)

"Save the Planet"
How arrogant to think you could do such a thing.
Interesting story. Apollo program was very exciting. I saw one of the launches from the officer's club pool at Patrick AFB. Very loud, even 3 or 4 miles away. The glory days of the US space program.
Too bad there are so many sad, confrontational people, unwilling to allow others a personal belief in whatever., commenting on it. Perhaps that alone does not give you the right to.
Me too. We would make a picnic and watch them shoot off into space. My mom made some goooooood fried chicken.
What frightens me is how many people still seem to believe the moon landings were a hoax, in spite of the fact that the "Hoax" has been debunked time and time again. Though I suppose that would explain why the next folks to get there will probably from China. Too many people in the US who just believe BS. Like the moon landings being a Hoax, or 9/11 being an "inside job," or Pearl Harbor being a False Flag operation.
Wonder how many of them also believe that aliens landed at Roswell, and the US was founded with Templar Gold.
That's fine, just leave my theory alone that the moon is made of green cheese. Some things are off limits.
Not to worry, the non people can buy some Gore carbon credits to comfort themselves
It's usually the people who are out-of-touch with life and its rhythm who just can't seem to accept a scientific fact. And they never will. It will always be the world according to Garp to them.
The pinnacle of human arrogance is believing that life does not exist elsewhere among the trillions of stars in the milky way gallaxy and a billion galaxies.
God creates life where He pleases. calnewlanministries.com
God is the greatest scam in human history... sorry
Bless you, organically sinner.
Bless you, Meki60 sinner.
Can't we leave "her" out of it just this once?
Even in the visible universe's great expanse, you cannot dismiss the possibility we are surrounded by just inanimate matter. ET life is a nice thought though.
You have the moxy to be certain of life elsewhere in the universe (somehow) but also have the audacity to claim that God is the biggest scam.
We're really fortunate to know that someone like you exists with all that wisdom.
What else should we know since, we have you live and captive on this forum?
I suggest that we allocate several billion dollars to find Noah's Ark. Now THAT would be money well spent, and it would teach American children about the truth of the Bible. calnewlanministries.com
The word "truth" should not be used in the same sentence as "the Bible" unless there is also a negative. The Bible is fiction.
The Bible is God's absolute truth, Asthole Nerd. Grow up and face reality! calnewlanministries.com
And lame fiction at that...
Cal, please do us a favor and move on over to the Belief forum where your comments are relevant. Seriously. Noah's Ark? It's a fairy tale. This is about actual facts. And a pretty epic discovery of some old hardware on the ocean floor.
Well, Mike, if you must know, CNN's Science Blog is the only one that hasn't "banned" me ... yet. There, I said it! Until I get another e-mail address, you're stuck with me.
CNN, are you listening? Cal Newlan is daring you to block him from this blog...
In fact, I double dog dare you to block him from this blog... and you know you can't turn down a double dog dare...
No seriously... this clown has shown time and time again that he is a troll.
Didn't James Irwin, who was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 15, lead an expedition to find Noah's Ark?
Noah's arc is such a fairy-tale, how can any adult believe that?
How can any adult misspell "ark"?
Trying to find the boat that was originally a boat on the Euphrates river, which the fable of "Noah's Ark" was based on would be a waste of time. That merchant's boat has long since gone to dust.
Bless you, sinner.
Where did ol' Noah get a Platypuss ? he was nowhere near Australia...and yet....here they are !!!
What a great find. Incredible success considering the level of tech available. You actually had to know your mathematics to build and fly these things as well as a slide rule or two.
I spent 30 years working and believing in the American Dream. A few short years ago I owned my own home, had zero debt and had a healthy IRA. Wall Street and the Banks have stolen most of my IRA and the equity I once had in my home. I am wondering if I will have a roof over my head and be able to buy food a year from now. Do I really want to read about a multi billionaire whose company does not pay it's share of taxes throwing away millions to collect space garbage off the ocean floor?
Yes. You do. You certainly took considerable time to comment.
You can laugh at me but I doubt anyone in this country will be unaffected. One of the reasons sequestration cuts are necessary is because after stealing trillions Goldman Sachs and the others left tax payers holding the bag.
Sorry for your hard luck. But, this is just a story. Hope things work out for you.
It would seem so...
Maybe when you stop whining about your problems, you can make some money some day and do what you want with it.
I am fortunate in that I had so much to lose in the first place, probably a lot more than you will ever have. You won't understand until you have worked for decades to put aside a retirement only to watch helplessly while it disappears because of massive fraud in the markets. Even then you probably will not understand. The Federal Reserve has printed trillions to clean up Wall Street's mess with TARP and the stimulus. Every time the Fed prints a dollar it loans it to the government at interest creating debt and making the dollar in your pocket worth less. Who do you suppose is on the hook for that debt? Do you think it is Goldman Sachs who sold sub prime mortgages with bogus AAA ratings? No. It is you. Do you own a house? When there is a bubble in the housing market and people default on their mortgages do you think the banks suffer? No.The value of your house goes down. The more you work, the more you save, the more you are victimized by Goldman Sachs and the other grifters who have a revolving door with the government. It was former Goldman Sachs CEO Paulson who as Secretary of the Treasury extorted 700 billion dollars from your representatives in congress to dole out to his former company and the other Wall Street firms who made bets with AIG that the securities they (Sachs et al) were selling would fail. Nothing has changed. 2008 was just the beginning. You can yell me to go out and make more money so I can get mugged again and again. You just don't get that you are being mugged too.
@TPM and others that don't know:
"...allowed the space shuttle to be retired without any real funding or effort to find a replacement."
We DO have a replacement for the space shuttle, it's called ORION, it is slated to fly an unmanned test flight in 2014 provided sequestration does not torpedo the program to the graveyard. To infinite and beyond!!!
Just to the left of the engine you can see Osama bin Laden.
LOL!! You have to give these writers credit for getting colorful in the story. Calling the engines "undiscovered" is actually stretching the truth. NASA wasn't looking for the spent engines because they were rendered useless after they were used. The cost of searching for them, and then raising them far outweighed any practical uses for the spent carcasses.
Where's the sea floor vegitation?
On the sea floor, of course. Where else would you expect it to be?
You're just full of misinformation, arent you? This did not happenn
It's sad how angry and defensive those who believe the Apollo nonsense get when their bubble is finally burst. I think most really know in their hearts we never went to the moon. When they finally accept the fact they limits have a nervous breakdown.
It's sad anyone would even get so bent out of shape whether someone does or doesn't believe anyone went to the moon after all these years. It's called a life, get one.
It's been my experience that conspiracy theorists of any stripe cannot be made to admit what they believe is a fiction. The fact that Soviet and Russian satellites have confirmed the landing location many times should be proof enough. The USSR was in a space race with America: it had every incentive, and the means, to debunk America's landing. Instead it quietly used the laser ranging detectors laid out by the Apollo 11 crew, as all countries have done since 1969.
I'll let you know how I feel when my bubble gets burst (it hasn't yet).
Actually I'm far more worried about what will happen to goofs like you when you realize it really did happen. You'll probably convince yourself the whole world is just your imagination and go cause a 20 car pileup on the freeway.
It will be sad when your descendents remember you as a complete, utter, conspiracy believing moron. You will be the embarrassing relative that few people talk about except as the butt of jokes.
For some reason, there are a lot of humans who have this amazing capacity to ignore reality and make up fairy tales instead. Such as the bible nuts, the birthers, the moon landing hoaxers etc. Wierd.
Park the engine by the 40 ft model of the moon, the one with the synchronized camera.
It worries me all these people still believe we went to the moon. Oh well. It's easy to fool the gullible.
Get psychiatric help, you sad little half-wit.
Yep, you're an idiot.
Shh, tell how did we get the Soviets to go along with our telling them and the rest of the world we beat to the moon. Egad we must have had so smooooooth talkers at NASA during the Cold War.
You must be friends with Achmadinejad?
Did it ever dawn on you that when Bigfoot and the space aliens told you about the moon landing hoax in Atlantis that day, they might have been joking?
Funny, I thought you were the smart chipmunk. Oh, well.
You mean the engines weren't found in a Hollywood studio?
Just a technical observation, but no way the engines hit the ocean at 5,000 mph. Terminal velocity of a bullet is approximately 200 mph. Those engines are not more aerodynamic than a bullet. Just need to keep them honest in a science article.
Gravity. If you were to drop a bullet, rock, or jump out of an airplane at 32 miles up you would going far over 200 MPH by the time you hit the water.
Incorrect if you jump out of an airplane at 32 miles you will hit the water at 120 mph. Google terminal velocity.
Aerodynamics... how does it work?
Although, to be fair, a 2-ton rocket engine would have a significantly higher terminal velocity than a person.
Yes, but not a higher terminal velocity than something as aerodynamic as a bullet.
the 32 ft per second per second gets you up to terminal velocity, then wind resistance takes over. But the more dense the object, the faster the fall.
If you know the mass of the object and the height from which it fell you can calculate speed using 9.8 meters per second as the pull of gravity. A bullet would not fall as fast as a bowling ball, for example, because the bowling ball has greater mass, and each object would have its own terminal velocity. Can't remember the equation ...
It's not a question of where he grips it!
It's a simple question of weight ratios!
A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut!
Where did you guys learn your physics??? Weight has nothing to do with how fast things fall, only wind resistance. this was proved beyond a shadow of a doubt on Apollo 15, when dave scott dropped a hammer and a feather in the airless vacuum of the moon and they both hist the ground at the same time.
the 32 ft per second per second gets you up to terminal velocity, then wind resistance takes over. But the more dense the object, the faster the fall."
Incorrect. Density has nothing to do with how fast an object fall. How fast something falls due to gravity is determined by a number known as the "acceleration of gravity", which is 9.81 m/s^2 at the surface of our Earth. Basically this means that in one second, any object's downward velocity will increase by 9.81 m/s because of gravity. This is just the way gravity works – it accelerates everything at exactly the same rate.
@Kerry - only in a vacuum, dimwit, which doesn't describe the earth's atmosphere.
umm, no it's hit at terminal velocity for an object with the drag profile of whatever chunk of the first stage was still intact. Probly between 120 and 200 mph. It would stabilize near that speed well before hitting the ocean.
Felix Baumgartner: 843.6 mph. look it up
Exactly. The larger the object, the higher the terminal velocity.
If you double the size of an object, its mass goes up by a factor of 8. But the drag, which is proportional to area, only goes up by a factor of 4.
The engines are very large objects. They would have a terminal velocity MUCH higher than a bullet.
These objects are traveling at a speed far faster then terminal velocity when they enter the Earths atmosphere. So in short, what you are saying is that an asteroid traveling at 50,000 mph that hits our atmosphere would be traveling 120 mph by the time it hits the surface... derp. Think about it.
Wrong. Larger objects have much greater terminal velocities, all else being equal.
WRONG! Everything falls at the same rate regardless of mass ...wind resistance is the only thing that makes things fall faster or slower. if you drop a bowling ball and a spherical 1 pound rock they will hit the ground at the exact same time.
Surprising how much confusion there is over simple physics!
Yes, you sad little half-wit, but wind resistance is what we're talking about. God, just how stupid are you? In the atmosphere the bowling ball DOES fall faster than the feather, doesn't it, half-wit?
By the way, half-wit, I have a freaking bachelor's degree in physics and a master's in fluid dynamics, which is exactly what this problem is about.
Seriously, get a clue.
I was in a movie called Terminal Velocity.
There's no way in heck a rocket falling to earth could reach even 1000 miles per hour unless it was under assistance. 5000 miles per hour is over 7 times the speed of sound. Whoever wrote this article had absolutely done not one ounce of fact checking before publishing it. This only makes CNN look less than credible.
WRONG. As I explained above, large (and correspondingly massive) objects have very large terminal velocities.
The first stage separated at 5,300 mph. That's probably where the article is getting that figure.
I believe you're forgetting to take into account their horizontal velocity. They were not falling straight down...
Likely the engines were travelling between 1200 to 2500 MPH at the time of impact. Difficult to say because we don't know the surface area, shape or the surface or the specific drag coefficient of the engine. MC is correct that it would be an issue of fluid mechanics and the TV would be far greater than 200MPH.
Your mission small child, whether you chose to accept it or not is to starve to death and die of disease while I the mega-rich pursue my childhood fantasies of being Roger Ramjet.
So go feed them, Tori.
No one is stopping you from feeding the little people. But in all honesty the ones responsible for putting food in their stomachs is not me or the wealthy. It's the two who decided to create the child in the first place. Why should I pay for someone elses problems?
play you pay. that is what I was taught.... I might donate to do a small procedure on them that would keep extra kids out of there future. Paying for them in bad enough, why add more?
The Apollo missions were great! Remember how often they prayed and made biblical references before an awe-struck world audience? Those were the days! By the way, which astronaut was it who organized expeditions to find Noah's Ark? calnewlanministries.com
The astronauts complained about seeing light with their eyes closed when approaching the Van Allen belt so they turned around and came back.
To spend money in pursuit of a Sumerian legend is an even bigger waste than hauling up broken engines from the seabed. Or do you mean the Hebrew copy of the Utnapishtim tale, taken in some places word-for-word from the original narrative? Wiki "flood myths," for the history of this amazing adventure story.
That would be Jim Irwin-LM Pilot for Apollo 15.
Mars! We need to set foot and claim our future.
How about we just send 90% of our Federal Government up there and leave it at that?
Amazing. Science at it`s best
IF you want to send me a friend request on facebook Kezery Lepeau
Mankind will never colonize another planet that won't be vaporized when the Sun goes belly up, it's a fact. Mankind will never destroy that astroid that takes out the Earth either. Don't waste money on this bunk that could be used to feed and medicate those in need here and now.
We already have the technology to populate the entire galaxy in less than 300 million years if we created generational spacecraft or cryogenic freezing. That's why it's actually really strange that aliens haven't visited earth yet.
The aliens were coming. Then they found out that people on this planet consider weaponry a right, but medicine a privilege. They wisely moved on to more peaceful hosts.
You're an idiot. Adjusting the path of an asteroid is very doable, right now.
Do some people still think that Apollo was a hoax, or do they just not understand why the Lunar Module was held together with staples and scotch tape?
Dream worth of being a stamp stamping on his early envelope, mailing to the world of many. Congratulaltion.
It's space junk pollution at best. Kudos to Jeff for digging it out and disposing of it. Now please someone go rid the oceans of the rest of this useless trash.
At least they found old space metal and least they know it still orbits
At least they found old space metal and least they know it still orbits Aesome
It's not 'Space Metal', it's Earth metal in origin. What goes up must come down metal at best.
Every element heavier than hydrogen was formed inside stars.
had the honor of meeting Harrison Schmitt a few years–he's one of the 12 that claims to have walked on the moon–and he was so believealbe–actually I have no doubt that we landed men on the moon not once but six times–by the way 12 men walked on the monon–he was the 12th–however he was not the last–how is this possible?
Cernan got back into the LEM before he did
Erm, no, that does not compute. Cerner would have to get into the LEM AFTER.
"The Last Man on the Moon" by Eugene Cernan. Good book.
Space stuff is cool.
These rockets are a testimony to the greatness of America when we had a goal to put a man on the moon. We only had slide rules, simple computers, and an emerging space program to build a space industry. The focus was to be the greatest nation on earth and to see our dream forged from JFK, to see a man walk on the moon. It was as great or greater to put a man on the moon as it was for Columbus to sail uncharted seas. I grew up in So. Calif. and I remember Rocketdyne running these engines. The sound would carry for 50 miles, that is how powerful they are.
Good post. When I was a kid in Miami, you could see these same rockets take off (I think Skylab was one of the missions.) from 186 miles away at night. Even from that distance, they were so fast that you just saw a pillar of flame for a few seconds and then it was gone. On clear days, we could also see the smoke trail from shuttle launches in the 80's and 90's. .
Apollo 17, December 7, 1972. The only night-launch of a Saturn V.
America WAS great in the '60's
We had a democratic house, senate and president. No Tea Party and no 'just say no' republican led house, so we got many things done. This was before the era of 'borrow and spend' republicans – We had 'tax and spend' democrats in those days. The really rich were all paying upwards of 50% income tax on everything they earned, not 10 or 15% like Mitt Romney pays now
Nowadays we have the trillions we spent on two useless wars that will have to eventually be paid for. Unfortunately, the 'borrow and spenders' were in charge when we rung up all that debt and now that the bill has come due, they want to cut everything to 'pay' for it, rather than ante up the $$$ they already spent
Oh, to be back in the good ole '60's again!
You just had to show your azz by bringing politics into it. You must really be proud of that $17 trillion debt on Obama's watch, eh?
You don't want to read about some old space junk. What you want is God! calnewlanministries.com
Really – God doesn't like space or science or learning? Sounds like you need to get yourself checked out.
I'd much rather read about 'space junk' than anything posted on the Cal Newlan Ministries website.......
That's the LAST thing we need. Too many people have died believing in that fairy tale creature!
There are no gods or goddesses, demons or devils, ghosts or goblins. Religion was invented by man to control the masses.
That's complete and utter bulls**t. Everyone must believe in something. I believe I'll have another beer.
What's a "God" ? Is that like a "standards" ?
Actually, I do want to read about space junk. Otherwise, I wouldn't be in the space section of CNN. I DON'T want to read crap from a troll. Especially about fairy tales. Please go back to the religious section.
You broke the internet!!!!
“We’ve seen an underwater wonderland – an incredible sculpture garden..." SAY WHAT?! It's space garbage at the bottom of the ocean – a.k.a. POLLUTION. The US Government should pay the bill for removing it.
Pat: A bit grumpy this morning?
I personally think this absolutely ROCKS! I hope they go to the Smithsonian so we all can view them.
....You represent the era where there was NOTHING a committed American people, AND A CONGRESS THAT WORKS...TOGETHER..................COULD NOT DO...........
..............BTW............what POTUS and which political party set sights on landing on the Moon?..........
........Psst................It wasnt the Tea Party................
lkhlh hlk lhlhlh derp[! g ggghkkhgk derp! jhlhkhhhkj derp!
Once again the low information partisan chooses to ignore the fact that it was Bush and His Bunglers who A) killed the Shuttle Program, and B) cut the NASA funding into the future. Heck, you folks don't believe anything scientists tell you anyway, so why would you care unless it was just to blame Obama for another whatever?
Actually, it was Clinton who slashed NASA funding...along with military and intelligence funding, which left us wide open for the attacks on 9/11/01. Sleep well on that bed of lies you've built for yourself.
It's not up to government to seek out the greatest technological advances in the 21st century.
Cnnmembuh – Did you sleep through history class? Nearly every exploration and technological advance was funded by a government, because only governments have the means and the reach to get the job done.
Here's a few examples:
– The discovery of America – funded by the Queen of Spain
– The development of accurate clocks in order to determine longitude – funded by English government
– Large scale food preservation through canning – funded by Napolean
– The Lewis & Clark expedition that mapped the routes west allowing expansion – funded by the US government
– The development of the rocket – funded by the Nazi government
– The development of the computer and the internet – funded by the US government
Many inventions remain novelties until a government (usually the military) finds a use for them at which point the funding becomes available for rapid advances to be made, such as surgical techniques and antiseptics (Civil War), the automobile (WWI), the airplane (WWI, a second round of major advances during WWII), satellite technology (Cold War) and GPS (Gulf War I).
Later on these developments are released to the public and everyone benefits.
I wish all you liberals would go to the moon and never come back!! What a bunch of whiny **ck heads.
Do you remember Michel Obama's TEA PARTIES that are atill going on? They came on first and will hopfully survive because there is real feeling about being a human being in them. Try to be a human for a while, please. I'm certen you can do that, not because you need to, but because you know better.I was confused once before, and still confused about a lot of things and voted and works for motives kind of like what yoMay the Force be with youu stand for at present. You have to go through your own self discovery and no one can help you, The fact that you can stand up is because you respect a law of nature that allows you to do that. That is I need to tell you. Be curious and ,do research.
It was that same party that fought Lincoln (R-IL) tooth and nail when he wanted to bring an end to slavery. So what is your point?
Actually, the republicans at that time was the party of bigger centralized government while the dems were states rights. That have since switched. So even though there is an R next to Lincolns name his policies are more in line with the dems of today.
Correct! Don't put an 'R' after Lincoln's name and tell me what a wonderful 'Republican' he was. The current republican party would not have nominated him for dogcatcher, let alone elect him to ANY office
Heck, Ronald Reagan couldn't with the presidential nomination of his party today – He's far too 'middle of the road' to even be considered
Today, a moderate like Mitt Romney who won as governor in a blue state and should have been easily electable lost – Why? Because he had to disavow all of his true beliefs to appear conservative enough to get nominated
The point here children is...DON'T DO DRUGS.
i designed the EAPL engineering assembly parts list for the Apollo Program. Every part was serialized. There must be parts on the rocket controls, perhaps beneath the insulation that kept the controls working in spite of the radiated heat from the exhausts, that are still in excellent shape. Any part with a serial number can be used to identify the mission the rocket engine was used upon.
Wonderful that you are able to assist! And thank you for your work in getting us off Earth and out there to explore.
Oh goodie. Space junk. At least it's in the ocean, and not still in orbit.
Its amazing how Jews are like less than 3 percent of the population of the US but CNN always manages to find one to be a part of every story. They must have a big roledex.
It has to do with education. Their culture values it and because of it, so many of them do well.
They also nurture and encourage their children which goes a long way toward making competent and self assured adults.
Its amazing how idiots make up less than 1% percent of our population, yet they manage to make themselves a part of every comments section of CNN stories.
You have greatly underestimated the population of idiots.
What a bunch of idiots making comments
What does being Jewish have to do with this story? It's amazing how many people will go so far out of their way to be offended at something not mentioned that doesn't matter
The remains of American greatness were also found nearby.
Can you imagine how our grandkids will look back on a generation who willingly marched down the path to socialism, gun relinquishment, and totalitarian control?
I don't care if you call me crazy. But 5 years from now, be man–or woman–enough to admit the crazy guy was correct.
OK, you're crazy.
Part 1 complete: I'm crazy. Mark your calendar for the apology.
Socialsim ? what are you smoking ? sounds like more nonsense comiong from the tea party
Actually, Paul, the opposite will happen. People will look back and wonder why everyone had access to guns and how stupid it was.
Just like people look back and wonder how we had separate bathrooms for different races, and how women couldn't vote.
Stay in the past, bro.
No, but I CAN imagine one day looking back in wonder at the ignorance so many had about so much. The fact that even you know that you are crazy is a step in the right direction but now you need to do something about it. Walking on your knuckles has to be uncomfortable.
Seriously, what an idiot! How much money was wasted on this crap? He couldn't help the homeless or feed orphans or something? What an idiot!
See that's a concept you don't understand. It's HIS money. Just because he is a billionaire he doesn't have to share with you. Maybe some kid will see this and want to be a scientist or travel in space. Why? Because he can! You just don't understand that the world doesn't revolve you and your opinions. There are some people who think for themselves why don't you try it sometime?
That's just your opinion.
Good reply. His money so that he can do what he wants with it.
Very good reply to a statement made by a buffoon that was not worthy of such a response. And as another responder posted, it is not like this money vanished. It went to people who provided goods and services for this adventure. Perhaps they will give it to the poor and orphans.
Just his opinion, sure. So is yours. He earned his money. Earned it. He gets to say what he does with it. It's people like you which caused the premature termination of the space program. I hope you're happy about it. I mean, look at how much better things are now, huh?
he spent money on a stupid adventure.. agreed . But he employed many people in that adventure. Instead of just giving handouts to people, giving them a job to do and paying for it is a much better social cause, if there was ever one.
There wouldn't be a need for 'handouts' as you call them, if Governments hadn't wrecked the Economy of this planet in the first place! With that said, Jeff B. didn't find anything as this story claims, he financed it at best. How humanitarian, we're all proud of you Jeff. That starving 1 year old kid in Africa will always remember your accomplishment until she dies as the best thing ever!
Who said he doesn't do those things? Many ultra-rich people have charitable foundations, and he's probably one of them. He has enough $ to help the homeless AND look for used rocket engines.
32 million horsepower. Strap that sucker to my pick-up!
Now, there's a boy who lives far south of the Mason/Dixon Line!! ;-)
Is it true there is a ring around Uranus ?
no, i had mine bleached....
Remove your lips then there won't be.
And debris itself being removed from our oceans floor is great.
The debris was best left in the ocean where it provided sea life a home.
Home for marine life? Not at 14,000 feet. If at 100 feet the engine would be a reef by now but without sunlight there is not much of an ecosystem down there
Sealife doesnt need our toxic trash for a home. That is what pollutors tell stupid tree huggers to shut them up.
Yawn.....NASA should be fined for pollution.
Where do you put all your trash? Landfill? Ohh man you are so much better
How would you recommend that NASA control where their engines come down?
Another yonk feigning sophisticated boredom, from him bedroom in mom's basement, while others make history.
Nice to know they can throw junk into the ocean whenever they want. Do as i say, not as I do. Polluters.
You throw your years of trash in the ground man, i can smell yours i cant smell theirs.
If it doesn't sell on amazon, it's going on ebay.
OK, kids, I'm outa here. Now play nicely, and when you're finished, put your toys away. Don't forget to read your Bibles before bedtime! calnewlanministries.com
Looked at your website. Kind of a nutcase.
Bless you, sinner!
He's also a troll... and a waste of time.
Did someone sneeze, Cal?
Pretty much ALL religion is nothing more than a cult
The collect your money so they can use it to settle their lawsuits
The engines didn't fall into the ocean at 5000 mph, or they would have been almost completely destroyed.
Air resistance slows things down to terminal velocity, which is what these would have hit at. Around 200 mph, maybe less.
Another example of how dead journalism is, at least at CNN. No on ever fact checks anything, they just put it up there and mislead the public.
I personally just chalked that up to a typo.
That number leapt out as absurd to me as well. The drag coefficient is really hard to estimate, and would depend on orientation of the falling engine (probably spinning as it fell, which would make it a variable value). But I agree with your assessment of around 200 mph
Actually, the engines would have been in Free Fall after expending their fuel.
They would have fallen at 122mph.
Actually you may not be accurate as it has been proven that terminal velocity may be affected by the effects of centripetal and centrifugal forces generated during the event causing minute but measurable vector acceleration resulting in velocity deviations from terminal velocity.
Finally someone with a simple and easy to understand comment.
But they began their fall in near-vacuum at over 5,000 mph. How quickly would they have decelerated?
I'm surprised they didn't just say "they were falling, like....really really fast. Probably like a million miles an hour or something"
My guess is not necessarily better than anyone else's, but I'm thinking a rocket engine might fall much faster than 200 mph. If the engine proper separated from the entire booster, it would probably fall even faster. If the booster assembly was intact when it hit the water, it still seems to me that it would be faster than 200.
500 mph is where I'd guess. No, nowhere near 5,000.
The engines were falling from 38 miles up, where there is almost no atmosphere at all, so the fall would begin with the 5,000 MPH they were traveling at the time. True, they would begin to slow as they encountered more resistance from the atmosphere, but the 200 MPH we usually think of as a 'terminal speed' for something falling within the atmosphere would not apply – They were going MUCH faster than that. Probably not the full 5,000 mph they began with, but certainly several times the 200 mph some of you here are thinking
You have no freaking clue how fast the engine hit the water. Its a freaking rocket engine!!! It just ran out of gas... Its going REALLY fast. Lol. According to your logic, no plane could ever crash at more than 120mph "terminal velocity" But we all know they do. Stay in school buddy
Remember that the motors wer not simply in vertical free-fall. They also had a horizontal vector (not sureif that's the right terminology in this case). In other words, they didn't go straight up and fall straight down.
I'd like to know where all the crap that people bought on Amazon is supposed to end up.
In my neighbor's garage
Interesting article. But the comments section make one wish for a nuclear holocaust so we might start over.
I would prefer a zombie apocalypse. Zombies have an easier time killing the stupid.
That is what money can do for ya. Explore and bring to people the history they never saw personally or did, like me, as a child.
Oh, Can I have the Zombies pleases? I want to practice my HEAD SHOTS!
All I'm going to say about all the naysayers trolling on and on by denying that the moon missions, and other explorations of space, never happened is this: They're all the same people who babble incessantly about how incompetent the government is, and yet they claim that it's capable of generating a conspiracy involving thousands of people, and maintaining it for over forty years. Well, they can't have it both ways. Either the government is good at what it's doing, or their conspiracy theories are what comes out of the back end of a bull.
The conspiracy has not been maintained for forty years, it is easily seen through with a little investigation. All the moon landing photos were taken on a sound stage. They can’t put a man on the moon now, let alone 45 years ago. Why do you find it so hard to believe that your government and military groups would lie to you?
Ross, why do you find it so easy to believe that thousands of people that worked in the Apollo program all lied to you? Why do you choose to ignore the fact we can already see the evidence left on the moon from the lunar landings? I guess I can't blame you for ignoring the evidence the LRO mission brought back since that's involved with NASA. But what about JAXA's SELENE probe?. Heck, India had a similar probe that discovered similar evidence.
Wow...these moon landing conspiracy nuts really do exist. I'd only heard them rumored about. Their mentality is truly scary...
You're either kidding or crazy, no third option.
Optumus, I am always glad to evaluate new evidence but what I have seen from JAXA SELENE probe they just say that they are passing an Apollo site but I still don’t see the lunar Lander or moon rover or anything else that I can distinguish, how many years will it be before we have a telescope big enough to actually see something?
SELENE was a mission to map the moon. I don't believe they had the picture detail to make out the actual landing sites. But, nonetheless the mission did help prove the lunar landing had occurred. They matched pictures of the lunar landscape brought back by SELENE to pictures brought back from the Apollo missions. I could be wrong here, but I thought I remembered reading that they also saw evidence of the disturbed landing sites? As for the telescopes, it will be a considerable amount of time before something is developed to actually see the landing sites from Earth. Even then, since some people don't want to believe hard evidence like the LRO pictures, I'd wager that conspiracy theorists will still want to believe they were faked. Even if you flew them to the moon, I doubt they'd all believe it was real.
They have pictures of the landing sites taken from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) – Google it.
That is of course unless you believe the LRO is also a conspiracy! Where does it end?
SHUT UP YOU IDIOT.
Another imbecile rises to speak...
Do you think the holocaust was made up, as well? I wonder if Mahmoud Ahmadinejad believes that the moon landings ever happened.
So there we were racing the russians to the moon,,we made it first,,,,,and russia (you remember them don't you?,,,,they hated us) does no denying that we made it there, huh, go figure.
Maybe Ross is just looking for a free ride there to the moon so he can have his nose rubbed in it.
Let Ross live in his fantasy world. We know there's a mirror on the Moon, left there by human astronauts. Ross gets extra attention this way.
Whatever. Let him have his fantasy that every day there isn't a laser shot reflected back from the Moon. What difference does it make that Ross won't believe in the truth? We know that it happens...and that every day, the Moon moves incrementally farther away from us.
I am shocked that no one mentioned the Mythbuster episode that covered Ross's delusion. They went through each of the theorists points and disproved them. And in the end they went to an observatory and bounce a laser off the mirrors left on the moon.
What confuses me is these nuts aren't screaming about the Mars rovers. I havn't heard anything about them being faked too....
I was going to rebut this, but I hear black helicopters outside my window. Gotta go...
Joe, to my mind, this is probably the most logical, most unassailable arguments against conspiracy theories. I've used it for years.
Unfortunately, every conspiracy theorist I've argued with is entirely impervious to logic.
I think the government is abducting people and implanting devices in their brains that make them impervious to logic.
You cannot use rational arguments to change someone's point of view, if they have not been rational in attaining that point of view. When you come to that realization, it is easier to just accept that some people do have irrational points of view, and move on.
To all of the imbeciles who claim we never went to the moon among other pieces of idiocy I have read in this thread. The Manhattan project started in late 1942 ending with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, While many might argue the moral imperative for actually using the weapons. The fact remains that from a small germ of an idea to its final awesome conclusion scarcely 3 years had passed which included the building of Oak Ridge Tennesee and Handford Washington Uranium seperation plants, for those who have never seen these places google them and try for a moment to imagine conceiving of then building something like this that had never been done before. Human beings may be malicious but oh so clever at times. Yes we went to the moon several times using slide rules and pencil and paper to calculate and engineer this feat. Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot and or a troll looking for attention.
I can see Purex and B plant out my window now..Worked at hanford for 20 years and it still is amazing the work done in the 1940's
Now if they could only clean up the 50 years worth of toxic mess they made there.
I think denying the Mars rovers would be far more productive since the Moon is close enough to be studied in detail. If the deniers stopped and thought about it a bit - landing a ton o' junk on the surface of a planet a few million miles away, trundle around, snap a few pictures, transmit them back with a radio with the same power as a decent flashlight and so on they'd realize that this is obviously impossible. Its much easier to fake this stuff, especially as NASA used convincing mockups of Mars for testing the vehicles.
Its a great conspiracy theory. Only one problem, though. The rovers are real. You can't make this stuff up.
...and of course if NASA's been faking it then what is Space-X up to?
"Thought" is not part of their repertoire. They WANT to believe in the conspiracy. They start with a conclusion, then dig up "evidence" to support it. It's the opposite of the scientific method.
You can not win arguing with the anti-science trolls. They know it all! They have their "faith" in the "hooey" extolled by their favorite conspiracy websites. They don't need evidence, they don't want evidence. Evidence be damned! These are frightened little rabbit(rabid?)-trolls, so scared of the dark that they cling to the shadows rather than confront them and step into the light of logic and reason. They actually believe that they are the reasonable ones and the rest of us are fools. They are the very definition of delusional thinking and you can never change their poor little minds. The answer is not to debate them, it is useless. Ignore them no matter what drivel may spew from their lips for it is the drool of vapid ignorance and nothing more!
Well-said. I recently made the mistake of trying to "educate" some anti-vaccine nutjob friends of mine. Big mistake. The more I proved them wrong, the more outlandish their claims and "proof" became. It even devolved to the point where they claimed that dead babies are used to create vaccines! I kid you not! It's times like this that I'm thoroughly convinced that society is DOOMED.
Yep. You think that's bad, trying having a rational discussion with a 9/11 troofer...
No, wait, I've got it: the eery blue glow from the spent nuclear rods in the pool at the graphite reactor in Oak Ridge (I won't bother with the correct name for the glow here) is a by-product of the chemicals they used to develop all the fake pictures of the moon landing. Plus, to make it look all 'floaty' and stuff, they stuck the model down in the pool for the on-moon pictures. The reason it didn't actually happen in Florida near the giant buildings full of giant rocket parts, is because Florida doesn't actually exist – it's a conspiracy between Georgia Louisiana and Disney World to rip off tourists. All those palm trees and oranges and alligators were trucked in from Hawaii over the land bridge and set up in the other sound stage in Oak Ridge. That's how come there are all those tornados in Tennessee – alligators and palm trees act as a magnet for the tornado weather vortex thingies that are spawned in the blue glowy pool.
See, it all ties together
There is no Hawaii either.
That's true, we don't exist. Your relatives who retire down here are reprocessed into vinyl furniture and polyester carpet. There really isn't a Florida. The government doesn't pay SSI benefits, it's all a lie to soothe old folks into the factories. Whatever you do, don't retire to Florida. Your relatives will be sat upon and trodden on, perhaps in your house or office.
No one wants that. Right?
I thought they were turned into Solient green?????
BTW: If I understand string theory correctly, all matter really doesn't exist. If you get down the the sub, sub, sub-atomic particles, they are really just fluffs of energy, so nothing is really solid, it's all an illusion. Like the Matrix....
I saw it live on TV so I know it really happened then. How could they broadcast it as it was actually happening if it wasn't going on. Apollo deniers need to look at the facts.
Bezos is a sad testament to the fact that when people get rich they go cookoo.
well they can afford to go cookoo if they want.. :) ..tell me you wouldn't if you could.. I most definitely would do so many adventurous, exploratory things if I can afford them..
What is "cuckoo" about this? I'd do it if I were a billionaire. This is pretty cool. I suspect you have no dreams, no drive, no curiosity. And that's sad.
If ya got it, flaunt it. Your money. Pick your passions, pick your friends, pick your...oops.
I have an old sofabed that I'd like Bezos to pull out from the bottom of the ocean for me!
So exactly how did your sofa bed get to the bottom of the ocean in the first place, polluter?
"But the engines were ejected after takeoff..."
Phrasing like that is why amateurs shouldn't practice journalism.
Even when the moon landings were happening, the American people got bored with them pretty quickly and didn't raise much fuss at the cancellation of Apollo 18 and 19. I don't think Americans were a better people back then than they are today. Maybe when we return to the moon, we won't take it so much for granted this time.
...you have it backwards....we were a better people then...today, Americans would be bored before the 1st mission even ended
I don't agree. Back then, they threw away everything the Apollo program had achieved. The American people saw their flag on the moon, and were bored with it. We get mad at the people who say it never happened, but the real scandal is the majority of people who accepted it was real, but didn't really care.
...which is why all of the engineering and inventing are quickly going to other countries that have become more "evolved" than we are. There are some good engineers left here, but it's an art that we no longer teach effectively (although some are trying to bring it back). America is becoming a "service economy." Service, as in "would you like fries with that?"
Boater......you have an excellent point. Fries with that. Priceless
Speak for yourself. Some of us have always been excited about the space program and have followed all the launches. Yes, even up to the last one. :(
Why bother using money to fund a cure for cancer that could save millions when we can spend it diving for rusty useless crap in the ocean amirite?
Why waste time posting comments here when you could be volunteering your time at a homeless shelter or some other charity?
Oh don't worry, I do that too. I help out at a homeless shelter on the weekends. I also donate money to kids causes and animal rescue groups. And you?
I completely believe you tibs. As for me, just yesterday I rescued a litter of puppies from a burning building while dodging gun fire from a serial killer, who was hopped up on meth, that I had been tracking for several days. Not only were the puppies rescued, but I was also eventually able to apprehend my bounty and bring him to justice. I also just got word the puppies are doing fine and are all on their way to good homes. That's all completely true btw, yep.
Optimus, you da man!
Awww, look at poor Optimus who can't admit that he's wrong. You poor wittle thing.
Haha ok tibs, yeah you really got me there. Your volunteer work was completely believable! I recommend you stay away from games like poker especially if it's for money. I didn't even need to see your face to tell you were lying.
Is it really so unbelievable that people volunteer to work at homeless shelters? It's really a pretty simple thing. It's not like I said I fly spaceships. And donating money to charities is even simpler. Most organizations have websites set up now where you can give by credit card online.
tibs, yes all sorts of people donate time and money into charities. Unfortunately you are not one of those people. You took the predictable route of producing a lie/exaggeration to avoid coming off as a hypocrite due to your original comment. You chose to lie/exaggerate knowing full well no one can fact check your claim that you are the good samaritan you describe. I can at least examine how you word your comments and determine you are being dishonest. Have a nice day. :)
Why post here when you could be feeding homeless people in a soup kitchen?
He earned it, let him spend it his own way.
To the moon landing skeptics, which of the following (if any) are true?
1) Voyager spacecraft flew by various planets and is on the verge of leaving the solar system.
2) We have developed, launched, and currently operate communication satellites in geosynchronous orbit.
3) We have intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of hitting of reaching Asia.
4) We have developed particle accelerators capable of finding the theorized Higgs boson.
5) We have developed and generate electrical power with nuclear fission power plants.
6) We produce electronic circuits with feature size of 45 nanometers.
7) There is a Hubble telescope in orbit around earth capturing images of other celestial systems and phenomena.
I'm not the smartest guy on the subject.....but aren't they all true?
You are obviously more intelligent than some posters here....
None of the above fictions are "true." They're all crude artifacts of the philosophies of men (in this case empirico-positivism), and thus are necessarily inferior to the truths found in the Bible. I've neither the time nor inclination to teach each of you individually, but you'll find many fine posts at calnewlanministries.com. Read them slowly, and try to use the mind God gave you.
LOL, this comment of yours proves beyond any reasonable doubt that you are just trolling.
Which comedy club are you playing this weekend? You're a riot!
God just sent me a text. He said don't go to Cal's website. Although funny, it's a waste of time. Instead he sent me a link to a funny you tube video of dogs playing with socks.
^^^^ a perfect example.
Was there a sale on tin foil hats somewhere recently?
Just because YOU do not have the mental capacity to grasp such things does not mean they didn't happen.
Meaning Cal–not trp...
Anyone claiming "THE TRUTH" with a website that contains the word Ministries is automatically suspect and discredited....
All very likely true facts.
But I can tell you that no human has landed on the moon, and no irrelevant facts will change that.
The moon landings are easily disproved.
I challenge any of the astronauts that claim they landed on the moon to a debate, of course no one will accept the challenge.
LOL – And, clearly, the lack of desire on the part of someone who has walked on the moon to debate some random conspiracy theorist on the internet proves once and for all that the moon landings never happened.
We are supposed to listen to you, when you do not understand that a fact, by definition, is true? (Otherwise it would not be a fact.)
I'd like to see the debate between you and Buzz Aldrin. Watching an old man punch you face would be hilarious.
Ivy Bridge (3rd Generation Core i7/Core i5) processors actually have a feature size of 22 nm.
It would be fun to have enough money to do something interesting but not particularly valuable. I would want to build a big zeppelin ala Hindenburg (using Helium, of course).
The cost of the Helium alone would be worth more than your air ship
I guess that's why I'll never be a billionaire.
Wonder if he gets to keep it? Space debris from the U.S. space program has typically been claimed the property of the U.S. Government.
I wondered that too.
As mentioned in the article, no, he doesn't. Also as mentioned, he has asked NASA to display them at a museum in Seattle, and considering the fact that NASA just gave away a few perfectly functional spaceships, I have no real doubts that they will agree to the arrangement for some engines that have been sitting on the seabed for 40 years.
Did you not read the article? It said very plainly that the engines still belong to NASA.
Bezos has said that the engines belong to NASA – he'd just like them displayed in a museum in Seattle.
I still don't believe we went there. No way. If you look at the equipment they used, they would have perished instantly. Flimsy fake space suits, etc. plus if you have ever been scuba diving you know there was no way to carry enough breathable air. Look at the fake air containment modules on the astronauts backs. They are just fake. Compare the most advanced breathing apparatus of today with what they claimed to be using then. What they were pretending to use simply would not work.
We definitly went to the moon. How was TANG discovered if we didn't? It's what astronauts drink.
you sir, are a moron. take off yout tinfoil hat and wake up
Yea, like we don't have people in space now. All one big massive and perpetuated cover up. In cahoots with the press of course.
A laser still today bounces off the mirror planted on the moon. Still living in your parent's basement? It shows.
I know the guy who fired the 1st laser at that mirror, Hal Walker Jr. Great guy with a love of helping inner city kids love science. His story is in the Smithsonian. His (and wife Dr. Bettye's) after school program is AMAN, Inc. in Inglewood Calif. Check it out.
The reason you blow through air so quickly scuba diving is that the tank must fill your lungs with pressure matching the external water pressure every breath. Water exerts an extra atmosphere of pressure for every 10 meters, so that's a lot of gas needed for every breath. Furthermore, unlike in a spacesuit, it's breathed once and then exhausted. In the apollo missions they breathed pure oxygen at substantially less than atmospheric pressure. In such a system air is recirculated and CO2 scrubbers remove the waste, so very little new oxygen input is needed to maintain the system.
tpm is right. There's a reason why you dive 7 minutes at 100 feet and 25 minutes at 50 feet with tanks that have matching air pressures on the surface (these aren't the actual numbers, just examples. You have to look at the table). Imagine how much further the air would go with no atmospheric pressure?
Well, if we didn't go to the moon how did the retroreflector arrays get there?
I'm sure Cal Newlan could tell you God put it there.
Google rebeather and you will see that it is entirely possible to carry an adequate O2 supply in a backpack. There is a great difference between how much we air we breathe and oxygen that is absorbed in each breath (abouth 6%).
You, and the rest of the 'reality denier' fringe element, should have their vocal cords surgically seperated and should be denied access to all computers/networks.
You are a waste of time with your pathetic lies. Your need for attention must be the result of some infantile trauma.
So there really is no hope for you. Sadly, people still believe that it is 'polite' and 'civilized' to allow you to contiue to breath air. Personally, I'd throw you into a volcano and never loose a moment's sleep.
So please, do us all three favors. 1) Shut up. 2) Do not breed. 3) Die soon.
Of course it's real. There was a bitter space race going on, with national pride on the line. If we hadn't reached the moon, you think the Soviets would've sat quietly and not said anything?
Rick, can I call you Rick? How can you be so ignorant? How is it that people like you most likely claim that the gum'mint is so incompetent at everything they do yet you believe that the Moon Landings are the perfect conspiracy with absolutely NO LEAKS or PROOF for your lunatic rantings in the decades since the landings?
How is it that you are prone to believe and spout such idiotic nonsense?
I agree with Pliny is his three very helpful suggestions. I would add one – do not mention your lunacy in public or you will be ridiculed to death.
You live in a world of instantaneous access to billions of pieces of information and yet you willingly choose ignorance.
I hope you have invested wisely in bauxite mines....
Haven't you seen Apollo 13? They didn't carry all that oxygen, they made it in space with oxygen generators.
Have you ever noticed that the same idiots who scream that we didn't go to the moon believe that we are being visited by UFOs? Quit watching FOX TV specials and go read a book for God's sake!
Then explain the laser reflectors we left on the moon. Shoot up a gigawatt laser and you'll see.
OMG, it's THE Richard Starkey. Now there's a name from the past. I've been arguing online (under different names) with that nutcase before there was an internet. He's about as sharp as a sack of wet mice and facts mean nothing to him. Just a classic troll.
Hey folks, I heard NASA has hired a new hair stylist for the International Fake Station.........
We(America) did go to the moon people but what is sad is with today's education system, I don't think we are smart enough to duplicate it now!!!!
We did it with German rocket scientists.
I lived in Germany for several years, and I didn't know that about the Apollo program until recently. I always thought we needed to emulate the German education system, and after reading that even more so.
Be more specific - they were former Nazis.
I shoot for the Stars (but sometimes hit London).
Nope. Sorry about that. We didn't go to the moon.
Well besides all the evidence that points to they did land on the moon and all the conspiracy theorists points were disproven by Mythbusters, the ball is in your court to prove it and your word is not good enough.
By the bye don't you think each NASA mission was closely tracked by the Soviets and if there was even a hint of a coverup the Soviets would have been all over it. Ya, a space capable country that was in a political all out war with U.S. would just sit by and not use a single telescope, radar, radio direction finder, spy etc to make sure what NASA published was on the up and up.
Shut up you worthless troll.
If by "we" you mean you and the mouse in your pocket, and I daresay any of us posting in this comment section, you are probably 100% correct.
Sure we are. Our education system isn't as poor as people tend to believe, at least at the college level.
We're also churning out more scientists than we know what to do with (literally).
I dunno. Did you see Curiosity landing on Mars? Those guys (and gals) didn't seem to be slouches.
It's more a problem with the lack of a lot of students' desire to pursue science and engineering. The ones who actually do pursue it are still among the best in the world. It would help if Dear Leader would stop cancelling R&D programs that are 80-90% complete, though. Ares I had already completed a few flight tests when he cancelled it. If we want to encourage children to actually pursue careers in science and engineering, cancelling the missions that inspire generations to come is probably not the brightest move, especially when you've already spent all of the money. Now, the Russian engineers are very bright, too, though. Those guys can give us a run for our money. China is actually starting to invest heavily in R&D, too, though (and in stealing ours, for that matter.) While China is currently still well behind the U.S. technologically, they're pushing hard to gain ground. Where things stand right now, though, most of the published research that I see out of China is junk. Most of the good papers I see still come from the U.S. and Europe.
Gotta admire the ingenuity of NASA engineers to pull off something so complex and successful. Even the calculations to have these engines splash down in the Atlantic must have been impressive.
All done with a slide rule too. They did not have the computers, spreadsheets, etc that are taken for granted today.
Yikes! Nope, I'm afraid they certainly *did* have computers in the Fifties and Sixties. No, not DESKTOP computers and certainly not the itty-bitty handheld things like smartphones you've grown up with, evidently, but the serious computation the space program has needed was ALWAYS done with the aid of computers–trust me on this. Slide rules have only *ever* been used for "ballpark" calculations, in any case.
@U-huh. Right: The average smart phone would smoke the computers of those days.
Yes, they did have computers. IBM System 360s, for example. Sure, today's computers run rings around it, but then again, it didn't have to run Windows or OSX. It just crunched numbers, and that's all they needed.
Well, at least they're cleaning up the ocean floor of garbage and refuse. Keep up the good work.......
OK, all you trolls denying the reality of the Apollo missions: I was here first! Go find another blog.
You slowed down a little. We thought you might need some help with the simpletons that still think we went to the moon.
The next thing you know they will be spending millions and millions of dollars searching for historic bowel movements. They will show a picture of a ol nasty one and say "DNA evidence proved this one belonged to Elvis" and then they will spend another million to analyze it and another million to make a TV special about it--this would be as relevent to our society as these billionaires getting publicity for their great explorations.
As long as it is a billionaire spending his own money doing so, why should I care?
A couple of nits: (1) the F1 engines were not "ejected" after stage burnout, the entire stage separated from the rest of the rocket; (2) the spent stage was not doing 5,000 mph ... there's such a thing as "terminal velocity" ... the drag from such a large object would have slowed down the decent significantly.
Well consider that the engines were already outside the atmosphere and traveling at high rate of speed. (escape velocity)
Upon seperation they'd rapidly decelerate after coming in contact with the air. The shear / friction forces encountered ripped the stage apart, leaving what didn't burn up during this time to impact the water around 200-300mph.
When the first stage separated, It would be at about 41 miles. Well within the Earth's atmosphere. And they were traveling well below escape velocity at about 5000 mph. (escape velocity = 25053 mph, orbital velocity, Apollo 11 = 17432 mph).
The Apollo first achieved orbital velocity and then fired it's third stage engine again a couple of hours later to achieve escape velocity.
Zackly! 5000 mph would have shattered the alloy.
Also to clarify the article – the F1 engines burned 6000 pounds/second EACH, not in total.
The belief that the United States traveled to and from the moon during the late 60's and early 70's shows how poor our public education system is. Children should be thought to question fallacies. To seek knowledge. To not blindly accept lies told by the government. Those simple minded souls that still believe the Apollo missions actually took place need to learn scientific thinking.
Unlike the bible stories, they're true.
Any reason you may have as to why you THINK we didn't land on the moon can be countered with evidence. You are unfortunately the one that lacks an education.
Optimus should rest his feeble mind. Critical thinking and rational thought might cause the poor sad imbecile to realize the truth.
Mark, the evidence that we landed on the moon is out there. Do a little internet digging. EVERY single theory you have about it being faked can be countered with evidence. If you want to try and prove me wrong, go right ahead. Otherwise please reserve the feeble minded insults for yourself.
Lets assume for a moment that you are correct, and the moon landings never took place. How, then, would you explain the very real existence of a retro-reflective array on the moon that anyone (yes, anyone, even you if you care to try) can bounce a laser off of in order to measure the distance to the moon? Are you proposing that the reflector array is a natural formation? Possibly some rocks grew into a highly reflective surface positioned exactly so that a laser from Earth could strike it? Or maybe there's a huge global conspiracy in which every person who's ever pointed a laser at the moon has been co-opted into perpetuating the lie without a single exception?
1) I've never been to the Moon; nobody has. I can't verify that what you say is true, that there are any man-made artifacts left there.
2) Prove to me that all those photographs depicting the "retro-reflective arrays" are not altered (i.e. "photoshopped")
3) Everything you've written sounds like the standard "DID TOO!!!" argument in favor of a Moon Landing. No different than the deniers, so you're either just as correct or just as wrong. In either case, you present no new evidence or arguments to support your claim.
/end sarcastic rant
You have issues.
'photoshop' did not exist in 1969.
No, let's NOT assume for a minute, they're correct. This is the same mentality that makes Obama into Satan using flies, 9/11 was an inside job & Jesus is making his appearance in slices of toast. Please do not feed the stupidness!!
Not to mention the tens of thousands of NASA workers, tier1, 2 & 3 subcontractors who all worked together to make this happen. Amazing all those folks can keep a fake moon landing a secret!
Oh, wait. I forgot about Capricorn One....(you know O.J. survived that movie)..:)
Perchance you need to heed your own words. There is physical proof of the Apollo missions: descent stages of LEM's on the surface, the LASER scientific package left by Apollo 11, moon dust and rocks differeing significantly from terran samples. How could we have gotten the "Earthrise" picture without having gone around the moon? The list goes on and on. How one could NOT believe that the missions happened is beyond me. Perhaps thost that don't believe think the earth flat as well.
Poor sad denier of the truth. I feel sad for your middle school science teachers.
Mark, if you can't offer up any evidence to your conspiracy theory then you probably shouldn't comment.
I feel sorry for Mark's mom, having to listen to the sound of fapping, crunching Cheetos, and keyboarding which wafts up from her basement for 24 hours a day.
@ Mark Welbey – You said: "Poor sad denier of the truth. I feel sad for your middle school science teachers" ... I am saddened by your ability to see the truth right in front of you. I feel sorry for you, your entire genome and every person on the planet that has the misfortune of being related to you. The Klingons have a word for people like you: P'taQ ... So get thee back under your bridge, Troll ... and leave the adult world free to discuss ...
@"Professor": What you've asserted w/o one scrap of evidence can, by default, be soundly dismissed w/o evidence or reason. Toodles.
Poor simpleton. Your ape like mind would be better suited for sports.
Sports? How's that working for you? Judging from your unqualified insult, not that well.
For crying out loud! There is always someone somewhere willing to tear down the wonderful achievements that the scientific might of our great country have devised. Let me guess, you conspiracy theorist imbecile... you believe the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks didn't happen and that the World Trade Center's twin towers are still standing in New York?
I truly hope, 'Prof Williams,' that you are NOT a real professor spilling this wretched bile into the minds of our future!
Of course they should ask questions, and guess what, those questions are answered by science.
We did indeed go to the moon, we have plenty of evidence of that.
Obviously the 'Professor' from Gilligan's Island. A laser today from earth is bouncing off a mirror planted on the moon. Time to move out of your parent's basement 'professor'. If we flew you to the moon and you saw all the equipment up there – you would still not believe.
Just a hunch here but you're not a real professor, are you?
Hear hear! Perhaps after dinner we can take brandy in the library and discuss the ludicrous rantings of Galileo and the earth being the center of the universe. Ha! Ridiculous!
... And another idiot rises to speak...
Did they find the Apollo soundstage yet? Feel free to click on my name for an informative blog about the Apollo fakes.
I firmly hope that you have not nor plan on reproducing.
typical old timer, pre-Internet generation sentiment of the Apollo believer...
Bob, you still think that NASA 'landed' on the moon inside the LEM, the 'three-foil-thick' tin can literally "held together with staples and scotch tape"?
crappygovernment, any conspiracy theory you have on why we didn't land on the moon can be countered with evidence. Go use that internet versus being a conspiracy theory lemming.
Go back to your damn fool conspiracy forums where you probably came from.
And here I thought your kind was extinct because of Logic and Common Sense. But I guess there's always one or two of you scurrying around in the gutters.
NASA = welfare for engineers and aerospace contractors, no more bailouts!
Unfortunately it's "Idiocracy" in action. There's no escaping it.
All of 'spaceflight' is fake, every single bit, except the launch of course, but no one is aboard..... NASA and the soviets conjured-up 'human spaceflight' in order to con the masses and to usher in 'astro-evolution'. Due to reentry physics that generates temperatures "ten times hotter than the sun", you burn up, just like a meteor. Hence, NASA and the Russians (and now Chinese) use cargo planes to 'drop' their capsules. Yet there are some folks that actually still think that the Apollo astros 'survived' a hypersonic, 10 miles/sec reentry w/o vaporizing, and then 'parachuted' to safety. NASA's claims are indeed running on after-burners and they see the writing on the wall.....
BS statement from a poor little troll.
So - you're saying that the Columbia and Challenger were unmanned flights? You're saying the 20 years of launches of all 4 shutles were all unmanned, eh?
I'm sure the families of the Challenger and Columbia flight crew will be relieved to know that crew of these shuttles are now living a secret life of luxury in Grand Cayman sponsored by our tax dollars, filtered to NASA payroll.
You... are an idiot. And the reason why others in the world think our country is a bunch of pompous morons with self-evident senses of righteousness.
(If any of these words confused you, you might want to look them up at http://www.m-w.com.)
USA and Soviets were basically at war during the 1960s. Now you say they were in cooperation.??
Ever actually examined one of the tiles from the space shuttle? It's pretty remarkable stuff, you can literally hold a blow torch on one side and have it glowing yellow hot and have the other side resting on your palm without it even feeling warm. I've done it, I know those materials exist. Furthermore, if it were impossible to shield complex cargoes from re-entry that would preclude nuclear ballistic missiles. Nuclear warhead components are actually fairly fragile and temperature sensitive. Do you think everyone who claims to have ballistic missiles is just bluffing? Do you think they put all those nuclear submarines out to sea with the sole plan of hoping nobody calls the bluff? Before reliable accurate ballistic missiles the only way to deliver a nuclear weapon was by strategic bomber, if this was still the only way, then why have so many fewer of them now in favor of missiles? The moon landings weren't faked, but it even if you believe they were you don't have to go full nutty and claim that it's impossible to build something that can survive re-entry.
P'taQ ... Every point advanced by the conspiracy theorists have been thoroughly debunked, yet you still hang on. Explain "Earthrise" to me. Explain the existence of the descent stages of LEMs on the moon. Explain the difference between lunar dust/rocks and terran examples. Offer explicit, quantifiable proof that the missions did not happen. And insofar as you dissing NASA ... the box you entered your diatribe on is a direct result of NASA. You have so much to thank NASA for, yet you choose to be ignorant. You slam engineers yet don't realize that every single artifact you use on a daily basis is entirely due to an engineer. Ultra Maroon ...
As an astrophysicist, I disagree with your assumptions. All true scientist know the lunar landings were faked.
Russia has laser reflectors on the Moon. They sent them up in unmanned missions. Do you people really believe we had better technology in 1969 than currently? That makes no sense! Besides the Apollo hoaxes, NASA has only sent men a few hundred miles into space. The moon is 239,000 miles one way, and Mars is 352,000,000 miles one way. Don't get your hopes up!
Benjamin – if you're TRULY an astrophysist, you'd see that all of my assertions are true. You deny the orbital mechanics that allowed us to reach (and return from) the moon? I offer you physical proof ... where is yours?
It's ok; he probably doesn't believe that Elvis is dead either.
The same MGM film sets used for Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" were used to fake the Apollo landings. Said film sets were dismantled after production ended. However, the same soundstages were likely used during the filming of Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange." That's as good as you'll get- track down the old sets for ACO (although, IIRC, they ended up in "Barry Lyndon.")
What a dope. Ready to move out of your parent's basement yet?
Thank you crappygovernment. I was so looking for a new comedy website and yours SOOO fits the bill. I LOL'd so hard I nearly peed myself. Keep up the fantasy comedy. Excellent job!
People are so silly believing we went to the moon. I can't believe any rational human being still believes those fairy tales.
We did. Get over it.
Rational human beings don't simply chalk up something they simply don't understand to a conspiracy.
Explain, then, how you can see the Lunar Decent Stage of several Apollo missions on the surface of the moon? How is it, then, that you get the reflection of a LASER beam from the science package left at Tranquility Base in 1969? How, then, is it that the dust on the moon suits so different than terran (earth) dust? Those that cannot believe that mankind actually left the gravity well of this rock are sorely delusional, their arguments based on conspiracy theory, not physics, chemistry, orbital mechanics ... or truth.
It is simply a rock formation reflecting the laser. Nothing more. Not little green men, space aliens, or some pretend astronaut me vice from the 1960s.
A rock formation CAN'T reflect the laser enough to be picked up by sensors back on Earth. The only thing capable of reflecting that laser considering the distance, is something that is manmade. You have anything else Eleanor? How do you explain the moon rocks brought back that have been PROVEN to be from the moon? How do you explain the LRO mission showing the lunar module landing stages , science experiments, astronaut footpaths, AND lunar tire tracks? There's also the evidence provided by JAXA's SELENE probe and India's Chandrayaan-1 probe.
I would have figured you would have died off by now. Because you truly have to be the first generation walking upright in your family!
Just how many names do you intend to post under?
I can’t believe any as lacking in intellectual curiosity, as you have indicated, ever even learned how to talk, let alone how to write.
Too bad stupidity is not a lethal gene.
i have faith in christ as well, however, I apreciate the rediscovery of the famous engines they once were lost BUT NOW THIER FOUND!
Maybe they can sell them to American Pickers.
Yeah, that would be good: "I'll give you $300.00 for the vintage STP sign and ... one of those Saturn V engines."
Why would anyone even consider looking for this stuff, it's a colossal waste of money and time.
Ironic. You criticize how someone else spends their time and money by posting a comment which in itself results in...NOTHING.
Successful man spending his own money as he pleases vs who knows with no argument...
His time, his money. He can do wahtever he wants with it.
why do you care? It's his time and money not the public's.
Its amazing that these people were able to acomplish the near impossible. Finding rocket engines 14,000 feet down. Or an airliner balck box 2 miles down. Makes me wonder why the govt could not find the black boxes from 4 airliners hijacked on Sept 11
Please say more for your conspiracy theory. Don't let it hang out there like that.
But I thought they did find some of them still intact. And found some totally destroyed. I think the missing ones were from the towers where they were probably just crushed to dust. If you gonna make a silly 9-11 conspiracy lie, at least get some of the story right.
Because finding a box that is giving off a signal underwater is a whole lot different than finding a box that has been melted by fire hot enough to have melted steel girders. There real question here is how someone can be so stupid and still have the ability to type a message online.
Your tinfoil hat is loose.
They were burnt up. There are limits of what can survive.
OK, I'll play along.
Suppose for a moment that the 9/11 attacks were some sort of conspiracy.
In that case wouldn't it be logical that they would "find" black boxes from all the relevant airliners, with faked audio supporting the official version of events, and release it to the public to help build credibility?
The fact that lots of evidence that could easily be faked is missing tends to tell against conspiracy theories.
For example take Iraq: If it were all a conspiracy instead of just sheer incompetence wouldn't they have just planted some WMDs in the desert for soldiers to "find" to help vindicate themselves?
Face it, most of these conspiracy theories assume that "missing" evidence is proof of the conspiracy, when in fact it is just the opposite because it would have been easy to fake that evidence. Nobody would go to all the trouble of pulling off a major operation like faking 9/11 without also manufacturing any evidence whose absence could fuel crackpot conspiracy theorists.
They recovered them off a Hollywood movie set. They were just props.
Another conspiracy idiot. If its online it must be true right? 9/11 never really happened and neither did Columbine or Sandy Hook right? Its easy to be a corward behind a key board Cosmo , you have it covered
I think the person who posted this was being facetious.
8 moon landing hoax myths busted
Clavius Moon Base – debunking the moon hoax
No facts are good enough for microcephalic conspiracy theory believers. I am posting these in the hope that other people will not go that route.
Useless space junk. You nerds are pathetic! Open a Bible once in a while and learn something about REALITY! calnewlanministries.com
you have some nerve referencing the bible and talking about reality in the same sentence.
Faith in God gives me strength and nerve.
Cal, too bad it didn't give you brains or intelligence. Cal, I don't need god. Like any rational adult, I stopped believing in fairy tales when I was a child. Sure, they are cute and can often teach us a story, but in the end, a fairy tale is just a story and the bible is just a fairy tale.
@Cal Newlan: "Faith?" DELUSION is the noun for which you were looking. HTH.
Are you assuming an inverse relationship between religiosity and intelligence, Sue? You're far to proud. On your knees, Sue–only this time for prayer!
Very funny. Run along, troll!
There are excellent stories in the Bible. Wonderful lessons about life and philosophy. But, the space program was real, not a story. So you are comparing apples to heat shields.
Cal, please tell me this is a joke posting? Open the bible for some reality? What a hoot. Talk about the bigest work of fiction ever. Again, thanks for the chuckle Cal. You are funny.
The Bible is no joke, Sue. You need God.
Shut your ignorant mouth!
Freakish nerdy ectomorph!
BWAAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh man thank you for the laugh.
You're welcome, sinner.
"You're welcome, sinner."
Pot meet kettle. Unless you're complaining to be free of sin...
Seriously? Are you just trolling?
Hush with your fairy tales elsewhere, bible boy. There's grownups talking.
"Hush." I feel like I've been scolded by Aunt Jemima.
get a real job and quit trolling for hits to your blog.
Space junk VS fairy tales. Hmmmm – what to do.....
Don't fall for Cal's attempt at trolling. Move along.
They can't help themselves. I'm irresistable.
Not all people interested in this are nerds, interest in this is not pathetic according to most posters on this blog. Your stereotype insults are not becoming of a true christian. You may need to re-evaluate your own issues.
What do you have against hobbies? Even if it is recovery of artifacts from the deep sea, it is something rewarding to do. It does not need to take away from any religious exercizes. Tell me how do you know they did not read Bibles while at sea looking for these engins?
Cal, you need a woman or a hobby pronto !!
Cal, you won't make any headway quoting the bible. Most of us think the bible is just nonsense: But if you want to have a MEANINGFUL discussion with non-religious people you can start here:
1. "Weird action at a distance" has never been explained or understood. Even Einstein couldn't explain it.
2. NDE's near death experiences have made some atheists into believers. There is clearly something there that is not understood.
3. Quantum mechanics has some very, very strange characteristics, particularly regarding observation and collapse of wave forms.
4. String theory suggests multiple universes
5. There may be some real scientific data on "remote viewing" that is not understood logically, and has been proven by double-bling studies
6. There is the possibility that the universe we are in is actually alive.
If you want to confront non-believers, don't use the bible. They will just shut you down. This list I gave you however, is something you can argue with and they won't be able to dismiss you as a religious crank.
You forgot to mention the "thoroughgoing naturalists" who believe in "free will."
These are all scientific theories which may of may not be proven in the future but they are base on science as we know it.
None of them explain the nonsense in the bible.
Just because you don't understand something, Don't assume that an imaginary being did it.
the bible and reality LMAO
I call "Poe" on this guy!
Here's a quote for you:
"You shall know them by their love for one another"
Tone it down, brother.
Reverend Newlan, I thought you were a vampire now!
I have a hard time believing that an item in freefall would be traveling anywhere near 5000 mph when it hit the water, unless it was being driven downward. A 5000 mph collision would have obliterated any item beyond recognition.
True. The terminal velocity should have been under 200 mph.
While terminal velocity might possibly be a little greater than 200 mph, it certainly wouldn't be anywhere close to mach 7 for an unpowered, tumbling rocket engine. The proof of this is that these engines are sitting on the sea floor more or less intact. A rocket engine hitting the water at hyper-sonic speeds would be pulverized.
Were they still in "thrust" at the time? Or were they always in freefall?
The first stage (which these were) is shut down and explosively separated from the following stages and falls in an arc, bleeding off speed from 5,000 to terminal velocity for its shape and mass, around 200 mph is a good guess.
They would have been travelling ballistically. Since they were travelling at about that speed when they began to arc over the top of their parabola, they would have been accellerated from gravity as they came down.
Terminal velocity is only good as an assumption if the object was travelling with 0 downward velocity as it started to accellerate.
No, terminal velocity would be the likely final velocity for something just reentering from orbit. It wouldn't matter what speed it was going, only whether the air has the chance to act on it. In the end, Terminal Velocity is simply the fastest one can fall where air resistance and gravitational acceleration are in equilibrium.
Except given enough time, even an object propelled downward will eventually slow to terminal velocity, unless there is constant thrust forcing it down faster.
You obviously flunked physics in high school.
I need that engine on my car. I could make it to work in 12.6 seconds.
LOL, to infinity and beyond!
Pure overkill. You just need a flux capacitor.
But the flux capacitor requires 1.21 gigawatts. You'd need plutonium... or Mr Fusion... or a well timed lightning strike.
can your car carry the 40 tons of fuel/oxygen that it would use in those 13-or-so seconds?
also, to the trolly apollo deniesr-you need to include the soviets in your conspiracy, too. becuase i am pretty sure they wouldn't remain quiet if the US did not actually make it to the moon.
Uh...yes, I have bungee-cords to hold the 40 tons of fuel in place.
Really long fuel hose on a reel!
As a former Rocketdyne employees I am familiar with the F-1 engine. I'm glad to see them recovered after all these years.
There are intact F-1's on display in Huntsville and at Cape Canaveral (probably other places). We originally planned to go to the moon 2 or 3 more times than we did. Great Trivial Pursuit question...How many tires are on the Moon?
In the mid 70's excessed F-1 and J-2 engines were in the Rocketdyne bone yard being sold for scrap.
Of just ours, or counting the Luna rovers? I'm thinking 12 tires on our buggies. Probably another 20 on the Russian versions.
Great question. The Ruskies crashed their first robot rover, but they landed two more up there. Eight wheels, each. But if it doesn't carry a person, then it's no a car and I say it doesn't count! I should have said "American tires", though they were made of wire mesh. So, I say 12 is correct.
Zero. We went to the moon zero times.
Thanks for a peek at your tinfoil hat.
Good one Snappy. I think this early civilization was well versed in slide rule computations too. They did not rely on computers to figure out everything. Next, the Government and NASA sill lay claim to these parts but is't the law of the sea that if abandoned, which after nearly 40 years of not looking for them, it's finders keepers?
wow! congrats! i would be so stoked.
Could you please tell the CNN Light Years bloggist that Chris Hadfield has been promoted from Flight Engineer to Commander of ISS Expedition 34. Thanks.
34 or 35?
You his boyfriend or something?
Thanks, Robert - we were a little behind on updating that after the Soyuz landing.
Thanks for reading!
Sophia Dengo, CNN.com
"...Bezos has indicated that he would like to pull the engines to the surface and then have NASA put them on display at a museum in Seattle." Does NASA really have the budget nowadays to handle any of that?
Uh, Bezos is going to do it. No mention of NASA doing it.
We apparently have found signs of an earlier, more technologically advanced civilization- that could send men to the moon and return them safely to Earth.
Yep. The Apollo "generation" was Atlantis, and didn't know it.
Preposterous. Humans could never do such a thing. These must be the remains of an alien civilization.
Well done. A world of possibility before the Tea Party...
You mean the party that is fed up with government waste and give away programs that has cost all of us our social security, put us all on a road to socialism through the inept abilities of the 555 individuals who are running USGovernment Company?
Pete, Leave the politics out of this thread. Turkey!!
Pete, there you go rustling DB's jimmies.
Dunno why you'd blame them given that Obama's the one who assigned "Muslim outreach" as a chief priority of NASA and allowed the space shuttle to be retired without any real funding or effort to find a replacement. We're reduced to relying on the Russians to boost our astronauts to the space station, because there's not enough money for planned spaceflight, plenty of money to hand billions in military aid to our sworn enemies in Egypt though.
Funny, snappy, but one correction: It wasn't a more technologically advanced civilization, but a more technologically progressive one. "Progressive." A dirty word these days, right along, apparently, with "liberal" and "conservative."
Ah, but "technologically progressive" is very, very different from the way it's used in politics.
It was actually a time when people all worked and were paid decent wages, managers and CEO's made realistic money and governent oversight was less restrictive. People had dreams, aspirations, and planned for their futures and not just for today and instant gratification. It was a time when credit cards were paid off monthly, cars were not financed for 6-8 and 10 years, and a house was priced under 50K. It was a time when the dollar was worth 10X what it is today. The Great Society of LBJ had not been thought out well and we did not know that it would suck the life blood out of the taxes we pay to the USA every year. Our Congress had not been allowed to tap the untapped SS funds and the program was solvent. Our educational systems were models for the world, and it was rare to see anyone not finish up high school. College meant something. We respected each other and the world respected us. It was a good time before the socialistic democratic party started their march to have 50% of us work and pay taxes so that the other 50% could sit around and do nothing.
@DB – Thank you for illustrating the definition of conservativism: A nostalgic yearning for a gloried past that never existed.
The days that conservatives yearn for were lousy. People died young.
OrygunDuck, that's true. Women had few rights, people of colour had zero rights and my sister died *sniff* from a type of brain cancer that's now very treatable due to MRIs developed from the space program. :( She suffered in great pain and died slowly over several years but now most young women are saved from the type of tumour she had.
Huzzah for the advances that have been made thanks to what asshats are claiming doesn't exist. Seriously. Then where did Velcro come from? Alien technology? If only these advances had come sooner, my sister would have survived her illness. *sniff sniff*
We could still do it today, much more easily in fact, if we had the desire to. A modern smartphone contains a lot more processing power then all of NASA had available to it then. They could probably program the thing to fly there automatically and land itself without a pilot, like the mars rover did. Did you see the details of that landing? Incredibly complex, I don't think they could've pulled it of in 1969.
Jesus Holy Christ, TPM, there's more to the cost of the space program than the cost of computing power.
Geez...what is wrong with people these days? They whine and whinge about taxes and the cost of this and that and then they make remarks about this kind of thing.
