An asteroid the size of a city block will pass by Earth this weekend, but have no fear: There's no danger of it hitting our planet.
The 80-meter (262 feet) wide asteroid makes its closest approach to Earth on Saturday afternoon in the United States. It will be about 975,000 kilometers (604,500 miles) away, said Don Yeomans, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. That's about 2 1/2 times the distance from the Earth to the moon.
"It's a pretty good size, but it's not getting that close, at least by recent standards," Yeomans said.
The asteroid was only discovered Sunday because search telescopes can't find objects of that size until they get close.
Now that it's in view, Yeomans said, astronomers can accurately chart its orbit. And they assure us this space rock will only make a fly-by.
The asteroid is already observable in the night sky, even with sophisticated amateur telescopes, he said. But get a good look at it now, because after the close approach, the asteroid will appear in the daytime sky and be harder to see, Yeomans said.
Dubbed 2013ET (which is simply code for when it was discovered), the asteroid is the latest object from space to come near our planet.
A meteor exploded over southwestern Russia last month, injuring more than 1,500 people, Russian authorities said. In what astronomers have said was an unrelated coincidence, a larger asteroid passed by Earth the same day, about 17,100 miles away at its closest.
This Friday, a comet called Pan-STARRS will come into view over the Northern Hemisphere. A second comet, called ISON, may be visible in November. Scientists say neither comet poses a threat to Earth.
Our Solar System is now passing through a region that has more asteroids...so get use to this news and realize..if they discover one just a week before it hits us...They are not going to tell us...What would be the point...
We are hardly "passing through a region" of interstellar space. These asteroids are leftovers from the formation of the solar system, there are BILLIONS of them out there.
Even if "they" wouldn't tell us, amateur astronomers would be able to spot and track these things. They simply couldn't hide it.
"The asteroid was only discovered Sunday because search telescopes can't find objects of that size until they get close."
Kind of says it all doesn't it.....
The Bible in Revelations warns us of a huge Asteroid that will hit earth during the Great Tribulation period that is coming........Turn to the Lord who Loved, died and rose again for you...........He will come into your heart if you sincerely ask Him, by giving you the Holy Spirit and Eternal Life..
............Revelation8: 8-11........8 The second angel blew his trumpet. Then something that looked like a big mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea. And a third of the sea became blood. 9 And a third of the created beings in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed. 10 Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.
So I guess 2/3 of us are okay?
The 'End Times' have come and gone. The Antichrist is dead! Scholars have determined that the Antichrist was the Roman Emperor Nero, who was reigning at the time Revelation was written. '666' is a numerological code for "Nero"
You can relax.
1 Corinthians 1:18-25
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
Shaddddup. Crawl in your hole and wait there until Jesus comes looking for you.
it never says wormwood what are you talking about
Actually it does say worm wood!!
A little research would tell you that most biblical scholars do not share your interpretation. The passage you quote describes the destruction of the Roman Empire by barbarians, with "fish" symbolizing Romans and "ships" symbolizing states (nations). You need to understand that the Bible makes heavy use of symbolism, and to miss or misinterpret the symbols will lead you to all sorts of incorrect conclusions about its message.
Unfortunately that doesn't work with the math that the Lord's day was to begin at the end of the 7 gentile ruling periods that would pass over God's people before messiah would return. Last Davidic king was Zedekiah he was taken off the throne in 607 BC, the prophecy states that 7 times(X) 360 days of years would pass by before messiah would return. 7 x 360 = 2520 years! 607 minus 2520 years is 1913 ad plus one year added for no zero year makes 1914ad !! Which was marked by the Great War WW1. Bringing attention to the first act of Christ to permanently cast Satan from heaven. As dragon came to earth knowing his days were numbered he stirred up the world into war, which also coincides with the begining of the ride of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse!
'Last Davidic king was Zedekiah he was taken off the throne in 607 BC'
funny, most historians have him losing the throne in 587 or 586 BC. Heck, most have him not coming to the throne until 597 BC.
or a bunch of people who never saw an asteroid before and had no idea what one was, were trying to explain it . it has nothing to do with god
oh good grief. I think you need to read something else.
And the great spaghetti noodle in the sky said, "Let there be meatballs, multiply and fill the plates until the sauce runs". So says the spaghetti noodle in the sky, so it shall be done. Pasta 3:14
ROTFL...good one!
So what is the difference between Jesus and a picture of Jesus?
You only need one nail to hang up a picture of Jesus.
anyway....back to reality.
......Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.......
Luke 21:25-26........
........The Coming of the Son of Man..................
........25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.........
That stuff sounds like it was written by a bored 5th grader! What drivel.
God says "It's like this: I created man and woman with original sin. Then I destroyed most of them for sinning. Then I impregnated a woman with myself as her child, so that I could be born. Later, I will kill myself as a sacrifice to myself to save all of you from the sin I gave you in the first place."

Suuuuuuure. That totally makes sense that an omnipotent, all-powerful being would do that.
Except it's not what Christians believe God said or did.
....There shall in that time be rumors of things going astray, erm, and there shall be a great confusion as to where things really are,
....and nobody will really know where lieth those little things with the sort of raffia-work base, that has an attachment.
.....At that time, a friend shall lose his friend's hammer,
....and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight o'clock
Judea, AD. 33 about tea time LOL.
Palintwit: It must be nice to live in a world where you aren't burdened by silly little things like Facts and Objective reality...
Healthcare is way up, covering less: Healthcare costs under the Affordable Care act have gone down. Why? because more people are eligible for insurance coverage, and those covered under insurance pay less for health care than those who don't. The affordable care act also says that insurance companies have to spend 85% of their premiums on patient care ore refund it to the payer rather than what they were doing which is was spending it on marketing and executive bonuses.
Gas prices are way up: – the US has had its highest energy production in decades. Gas Prices are up because US gas refining companies are senidng their finised products overseas where they can get more money for them in the US, creating artificial shortages of fully refined petroleum in the US, where demand is down due to the after effects of natural disasters and the increased prevalence of hybrid cars. Also, in the short term, they are running out of the winter gas blend, as they often do between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, causing price increases, especially in areas where it is most needed. Oh, and there is the whole price-fixing thing. And the fact that the leader of an oil-producing company just died, which always shocks the market.
Food prices are way up – Because gas prices are up and because of the midwest drought last year that negatively impacted farm production, most especially corn, which is where corn syrup, corn oil, and animal feed comes from, creating a shortage. Supply and demand – low supply, high demand, price increase. Thank Global warming rather than blaming Obama. Oh, wait, Republicans don't believe in Global Warming. That whole fact and science thing they have a problem with.
Cost of living way up: See "Gas Prices, Shortages and Global Warming" causing increased costs in food and gas. Excluding food and gas, retail goods costs have gone down.
Income tax is now way up and it's only getting worse: Congress let the payroll SS tax cut expire. That money never came out of your pocket in the first place. The SS Payroll tax cut allowed employers to pay less in SS tax, which means what they normally had to send to the Fed as part as tax liability, they got to let people keep instead. Despite what Boener and the Tea Tards say, CONGRESS controls the tax rate, the budget allocations and the federal purse strings – NOT THE PRESIDENT. Its odd how those that complain the most about stuff know the least about it.
Well except for the 47% on welfare that have 10 kids, free healthcare, free cell phones, and EBT card they can buy booze and lotto with... all at the tax payers expense: That 47% that people keep talking about referred to the percentage of people who would vote for President Obama no matter what – he was basing that figure on the demographic base that voted for him in the 2008 election or who historically vote democrat, which included: senior citizens, military vets, disaster victims, people on disability pensions and unemployment because they lost their jobs when the Economy tanked during the BUSH ADMINISTRATION. They are also successful doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, performers, business owners, retirees , educated people and students. These are the people Romney were calling "freeloaders". Every developed country in the civilized world has free healthcare and laughs at the US because we don't – they think we are barbarians. The cell phone story has been debunked repeatedly, as is the fact that you can't buy booze an EBT card. There are very strict guidelines on what food stamps pay for.
All of this information is available through independent studies, surveys, industry reports and non-partisan news sources and at your local library. Thanks for playing.

Things are going well in my area. Gas is drifting down, housing is going up and I am making money. And there are jobs. All is well in my world.
You know where you can stick that Obama-phone don't cha ??
Wow.. talk about mis-information lol you should write a book for the DNC. Long post short lies funny to read though. Next time you talk facts you may want to have a few. Obama for King!!
Oh, asteroids – never mind.
My world has opened up so much ever since Obama became president. He gives me a phone, food stamps, the ewelfare and will protect me from them hemoriods.
Sounds like your brain wasn't covered.
Yeah, the free phone thing was started by Reagan and expanded by Bush Jr. Try again.
Tool, welfare was just cut by like 70,000 people here in PA, no more cash assistance for them. Where is this Obama welfare you talk about.
You voted for him didn't you? Well, he doesn't need you anymore.
I like it in the bum. I support Obama and free money.
That's not Observer2. It's the phony palintwit. ^
"The asteroid was only discovered Sunday because search telescopes can't find objects of that size until they get close."
So what they are essentally saying is that we will only get about 5 days notice if the end of the world comes by asteriod.
Word.
No, an asteroid of that size would do some damage, but it would not end the world. A larger asteroid would be easier to detect earlier. But it is still true that our ability to detect potentially dangerous asteroids is seriously deficient.
Thats what happens when you give NASA such a small budget. We have the ability to find these things, but we dont have the funds to do it. Our solar system is a big place, but NASA is only given a budget to see small areas of it at any one time.
The world is coming to an end........thanks to Obummer!
80 meters would cause some major damage, but it would be far from an extinction level event. One that is large enough to cause an ELE would likely be spotted quite a bit in advance.
What if the Mayans were right but an alien race destroyed the asteroid that was going to hit us? Are we seeing the remnants of that destroyed asteroid? Just sayin'.
Yeah man, what if the Mayans were right, but Superman and Hello Kitty got together and turned back time by flying fast around the earth, then prevented the disaster before it happened?
...pfff...Superman...no such thing. Now, Hello Kitty...
That would simply mean the Mayans were wrong. Unless you believe they were tracking a much larger asteroid and were able to accurately calculate that it would collide with us many hundreds of years in the future. Which is only slightly less likely than predicting the end of the earth by some other random occurrence.
OTOH, did you ever consider that they probably just decided they had created a calendar that covered way more time than they had any use for and cut the calendar departments budget?
Here's the 95% of Blacks that vote for Obozo...

Would you please get your drivel off this site?
Your names fits ya Twit.
Palin?? is that really you?? Now that even Fox News canned you, I guess this is the only place you can peddle your garbage.
Where's that moderator when you need him? Why does this mentally deficient moron get to post his lame propaganda on a science site? Hell, this jerk probably doesn't bellieve in science anyway!
What's it like being stuck back there in 2008? Is that when "The Office" was still funny?
One of the most common ways to construct a straw-man argument is to find an unpalatable person who incorrectly represents a point of view, then to claim that everyone similar to that person agrees with them. It is a logical fallacy. Luckily, most people are smart enough to figure that out...but you are apparently not one of them.
Is sterilization to much to ask before taxpayers give this woman more of their hard earned money?
Wow you need to get a life. Political posts on an article about asteroids?
I'm ok with political posts as long as they relate to the political barriers to scientific advancement in this country. Otherwise, uneducated cretins need to disappear.
@ palinfan... read what they think about Sarah Palin in Europe.
" If anything is a threat to the national security of the United States of America, it is this screaming, unrefined oaf with as much class as a searing release of flatulence followed by hysterical giggling at a state banquet. Is this what the people of the USA deserve?
To attack the President of the country at a time when the USA needs to close ranks and stand together to consolidate the enormous strides his intelligent and respectful approach has achieved in building bridges, when her party's period in government bombed them, Sarah Palin comes across as a pitifully inadequate anachronism from the times of the Far West. "
The United States of America has evolved. She has not.
Not the real palintwit ^
I think we all know that it is the real palintwit.
Hmmm . . . three rocks for a quarter.
To solve this problem, we need to have the UN issue additional sanctions against the celestial bodies. It is my understanding that Dennis Rodman intends to go to outer space in an attempt to negotiate no further threats of an asteroid
Hi this is Dennis Rodman. I just want everyone to know that I can't go into space to talk with this latest asteroid as I'm still mourning the death of the asteroid that exploded over Russia a few weeks ago. I knew that asteroid well, and he was a good friend of mine. A lot of people say that the asteroid hurt a lot of people when he exploded, but knowing him personally I can say that he never would have hurt anyone when he detonated with hundreds or kilotons of force, or knocked out windows and walls with his shock wave- that's not the kind of person he was.
The next asteroid please........
UV Trippin.
80 meters I believe is smaller than the estimate of the tunguska event. Any astrophysicists here? If it were a rocky asteriod it would probably break up and explode miles above the surface of the earth would it not? If it were a metallic asteroid it would probably be much more devastating, but aren't those easier to spot from further distances? 80 meters doesn't bother me too much. With our technology, the time frame in which they found it would allow for evacuations of cities at risk. The earth is mostly water though, so in all likelihood it wouldn't hit a major city. I'm more concerned about the asteroids big enough to trigger extinction events
>> "It's a pretty good size, but it's not getting that close, at least by recent standards," Yeomans said.
Recent standards being that it hits us?
No, recent standards being the rock that passed between the Earth and moon about a month ago.
Maybe we could a big rocket to nudge the asteroid just enough so that next time around, it lands in North Korea or Iran.
HOPE IT DOESNT BREAK INTO LARGE PIECES
Why?
If it breaks up close to our orbit, we could get another incident like in Russia. However, it could cause a lot more damage, depending on size.
Better to be hit by several smaller pieces than to be hit by one big one. Smaller pieces are more likely to disintegrate before impact and also its better to diffuse all that power than to have it all impact one spot.
You think this woman ever voted?
All this recent asteroid business reminds me of this novel I just read called THE MYOSHI EFFECT which is about an asteroid headed toward earth and how everybody reacts and the government tries to find a way to deflect it. Granted the novel is humorous, like Dr Strangelove or Douglas Adams or something, but how we just reacted to these last 2 space rocks is almost taken from the pages of the book. Fiction and fact are fast becoming one.
I work in real-estate and what you just said is wrong.
can you type that again.
Yes, there is but one truth:religion is dangerous.
No longer believe NASA or your government about space debris. We've been told we would have plenty of notice if a devastating object were coming towards us. They just found this 5 days ago. This could just as easily be on a direct hit path for L.A. or NYC. 80 meters wide would pretty much flatten either of those cities.
Have we really been told that? Seems to me like every time these articles come up that scientists are saying generally they can't see them until they're close and have only mapped about 10% of dangerously sized objects who's orbits come near Earth.
This pretty much. NASA and other space organizations have been pretty clear on their position – they need more funding in order to shore up identifying and predicting the past of near-Earth asteroids and comets.
This object isn't large enough to cause widespread damage, even if it were to hit.
You're joking, right? If this thing were to hit it would cause serious worldwide damage. Not in the sense of the actual impact, but by blocking out the sun with dust and debris. It wouldn't wipe out life but it sure would kill a lot of people and for those who survive, life would be very uncomfortable for quite a few decades.
@ Toby,
That's not true. It's smaller than the estimate of the Tunguska event. It would most likely hit over water, and there is a good possibility that nobody would die even if it were to hit. If it were 8000 meters wide, now that's a different story
They never said that. Many times have said that about 5% are located, 95% we have no clue where they are until they are very close.
Joe,
Wow, facts and truth getting in the way of your fake hate for the government? Enjoy your stop light, your paved road and your police protection today bud.
To say that a failure to spot an asteroid so small as to not be a real threat means that we will not see an asteroid big enough to do damage is silly. Do they not teach simple logic in schools anymore? LITTLE ROCK = HARD TO SEE BUT NOT DANGEROUS. BIG ROCK = DANGEROUS BUT EASIER TO SEE. Does that clear it up for you?
Five days should be enough warning time to empty a city, so no worries mate.
We'd know about an ELE capable one, this is big, but nowhere near an ELE event.
We don't have quite the tech to detect them this small from that far out right now. We need to work on it.
Like today's asteroid??
Nah, not my hide, He lives in my heart! Praise His Name.
EJ... LOL
When they do find an asteroid on a collision course with Earth, expect armageddonists will try to prevent governments from deflecting it.
Not to worry, my friend. I ate there a year ago, so I suspect it is still with me.
I'd be lying if I said I hope it doesn't hit. Honestly I'm rooting for the asteroids at this point. Humanity has the resources and knowledge to deal with these and we hardly bother with it. Only recently did everyone get a wakeup call with what happened in Russia and we're still not really moving much on this. If there ever was a species that was too lucky for their own good it's humans.
Russia was hit by a meteor that big in 1908! Forget 2013! We've had decades to deal with this. But Capitalism won't work on issues unless there is a profit in it. There's no money to be made in this so we'll continue to do nothing about it. That leaves government to do it but God forbid if gov't is allowed to spend a dime without the Republicans going haywire (the same people who don't believe in climate change). so yeah, we're pretty much doomed.
True but also the Russians kind of covered that up to some extent also people don't remember back that far very easy. The one in 2013 is a nice launch point to go in to the strike back then.
Unfortunately that is true. People in this country either aren't intelligent enough to realize it because they are brainwashed and/or haven't been educated, or they are too lazy to get off their butts and do something about it. There are plenty of intelligent, open-minded people in this country. We need to organize and make our voices heard. I wish we had the collective will-power of the activists from the 60's.
"Search telescopes" can't find objects big enough to destroy New York!?
This planet needs a massive asteroid strike and a restart.
Umm, it WAS found, thus the article......
So this block sized Asteroid was discovered in 2013? ok let me do the math... hmm that means we only found out about it in the last 9 weeks or less... so if it had been aimed at Earth that seems like MORE than enough time to come up with a plan that would save us build the rockets, warheads, etc etc and launch them and hope it works sure thats plenty of time, see we dont need to spend any money on space whatsover we can spend it all down here on earth, no need to worry that one day everything we spent money on down here on earth will all be blown to bits one day........we got it all covered.
Isn't that what they said before?
Which "what"?
I hope you all understand the importance of this story. An asteroid the size of a city block was not detected until 6 days before it flies by Earth. One day (probably soon) an asteroid is not going to fly by and actually hit the earth and we will only have 6 days to prepare.
You will not be told about it.
The president will have six days to prepare.
Not true....amateur telescopes make up the majority of these discoveries. The government cant hide something so massive from the average astronomer. That would be like saying the govt knows about aliens. If NASA had the chance to prove aliens exist they would because their budget would instantly be unmatchable.
@karlotious – Your last point about NASA's budget skyrocketing in response to the discovery of aliens is very good. I had never considered that before. Thanks for actually broadening my perspective a bit. Refreshing in comparison to much of the mindless drivel posted here.
"probably soon" – is that in a geological time frame? Statistically speaking there is no particular reason to imagine it will happen "soon" from a human perspective. On the other hand, better safe than sorry. It CAN happen no matter how small the probability. It s a big universe.
As demonstrated by the meteroite that detonated over Russia last month, there is likely not to be any warning at all if an asteroid were on a collision course with Earth. A rock this size would do significant damage to a major city. It would not be a planet killer, but it would make some other notable disasters look like minor accidents by comparison.
come at me, brah
hmmm, oh yeah, it'll fly right on by just like that Russian asteroid. Let's just put our faith in everything that we're told...
Nobody ever said the Russian meteor would miss us; for two good reasons.
1. Nobody saw it coming
2. If they had seen it coming they would not have said it would miss us.
It's always good to have dreams and ambitions, I suppose...
The last time one was gonna come close Russia got one blowing up in its atmo.
And I got a hangnail. I hope I don't get another one on Saturday with another asteroid cruising by.
What does this have to do with a science article?
So which country are you the dictator of?
So you tell us only 4 days out or one day out and you have to know how many more we are in for. . . . right? Is this why the world got so ruthless all of a sudden?
Read more history… there is no “all of a sudden” to it.
scientist say that the big bang happened all of the sudden
The information is out there- look it up I you are interested. Spaceweather dot com... Bottom of the page a list of size date and distance
Remember the last time we were going to have a near miss, and one came from a different direction and no one saw it until it hit, and exploded. Also earth was formed from space debris a little at a time. We are growing ,don't you know.
I'd love to be around for Chicxulub II to see the anthropocene come to an end.
They say there's no danger, but I'm gonna kill myself just in case!
It just shows that we are getting better at spotting them. It has been estimated only about 10% of the near earth asteroids have been found and these are the ones this size. We are no where close to spotting ones the size of the one that blew up over Russia (about the size of a bus). Something like that surviving to hit the earth's surface would level a city and leave a crater on par with meteor crater in AZ http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/46/Meteorcrater.jpg/800px-Meteorcrater.jpg
Anyone else getting the feeling in past month that there is someone out in the asteroid belt who is bored and doing a little golf putting with asteroids aimed at Earth ?
Nope, the media is just paying more attention now that an asteroid passed close by, and one exploded over Russia. Isn't the first time in the past 100 years an asteroid has exploded over Russia, and the Earth gets hit by asteroids and comets about every 6 minutes.
The only recent development is that the news media started paying more attention to it. Give it a week or two and you'll stop hearing about; but it'll still be happening.
I think they are forgetting the last time where one missed us and the other hit Russia. So I am not holding my breath!
Scientists and journalists, so FUNNY! "Don't worry , won't hit us" That's what they said last month and then Russia? I'll bet some little ones are trailing, traveling with this one too.
they came from completely different vectors, the asteroid and event in Russia were not connected in any way.
noooooo, he doesn't get it! He will never understand what vector means if he doesn't understand when you say direction instead.
I'm sure there is a bookie sitting around somewhere who will take that bet (and your money).
The one that exploded over Russian came about 15 or 16 hours before the asteroid passed, and came from the opposite direction. They were not related.
Hmmm, the solar system is throwing rocks at the earth. I think it is trying to tell us something
If you call over half a million miles away "flying past the earth" we understand things differently. I am going a few places this weekend and will be within 25 thousand miles of everyone on earth. Wave to me as I go by!
The earth gets hit by an asteroid or comet about every 6 minutes. Most are too small to notice, though.
Bare in mind that the Earth and moon both excert gravity, and therefor objects are often attracted to us (although there are many large objects in our solar system that excert a lot more gravity than Earth). It's pretty common to have objects fly by or hit us, just look at the moon; it's covered in impact sites.
i learned in junior high that gravity can also be referred to as the dolly parton theory...
the bigger they are, the more they attract
I created a time-lapse of this asteroid a couple of nights ago – it's here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/113293976957750950702/posts/Fd7KLts84Z4
I'll also be using the same robotic telescopes in the Canary Islands to image it live as it makes its closest approach. The images will be broadcast live on a free public show on Saturday. Details on that post linked above.
Hey, thanks for the link and for the introduction to SLOOH!
(It is refreshing to have someone actually talk about the thread subject. LOL)
Has anyone tied the previous one's that came down a couple of weeks ago. to the sink hole in Florida.
After all it slam into the earth at I believe 40 thousand miles per hour. Something hitting that hard had to shift something under something us.
/facepalm
It DID NOT slam into the earth. It blew up in the atmosphere.
Technically, it DID "slam into the Earth". The atmosphere is very much part of the planet, and the heat and friction of the gases it hit very quickly caused the explosion, every bit as much as if it had hit sold rock. I get your point, and I also get that my point is lost on OP, but still...
Sure would be nice if the writer told us where to look in the sky this weekend. Kind of leaves us hanging...
ummm, you'll need a pretty powerful amateur telescope. And if you own one then you probably already know what web sites to go to get the tracking info.
It wasn't noticed until last Sunday since it's so small?.....What I'm hearing is that "if" it was on collision course with the planet the world would only have a weeks notice. We ALL know that there is no way any government or coalition could agree on anything in that short period of time. Does anyone else think they need to reevaluate the process and maybe spend some money developing/building stronger telescopes?
We've been watching the skies for hundreds of years and, through a lot of hard work and expense, now have the ability to give you a week's notice before an asteroid comes close to us. Can you not comprehend how incredible that really is? Can you comprehend how incredibly HUGE space is around our tiny little planet? Even with an observatory in every city, on top of the thousands of satellites we have in orbit, we couldn't watch every inch of the sky. While i agree that many of these programs DO need more funding, your expectations are incredibly naive.
Actually, you're the naive one. We could cut military spending by 1% and use that $$$ to map the sky, and get probably 90% of these objects mapped in pretty short order. We CHOOSE to be ignorant of lethal asteroids by not committing sufficient resources to mapping the skies. I think that was closer to the original poster's point.
lets drop a few F-35 and put our money in to science and education where it matters and will in the long run make us safer and stronger
agreed. sadly the government (well, more accurately buddies of those in government) doesn't see any money in that..
comets and asteroids are known as bad omens in ancient times. signals from Heaven..
They're just snowballs and rocks in orbit. And asteroids are not typically visible to the naked eye, so they were not considered bad omens. They didn't know they were there.
Agreed, unfortunately people like him are never going to believe logic.
So are black cats.
That is why I shave all the black off of mine.
there is no explanation on the earth orbiting the sun and sun orbiting the milky way and milky way orbiting a galaxy..as for asteroids they are like rocks orbiting in another space. haley comets and astreroids...the universe is full rocks that exploded billions of years ago..years millions years ago. the light you see in the stars millions years old...it took that a million years for that light to come to earth...
And crawling on that planet's face, some insects, called the human race....
"there is no explanation on the earth orbiting the sun and sun orbiting the milky way and milky way orbiting a galaxy"
There's so many things wrong with that "sentence" I wouldn't know where to begin.
It's a little unsettling to think how quickly our lives could be turned upside down by a totally random event. I'd like to say such things are unpredictable but they're not, they're sure bets. The "when" is the unpredictable.
No kidding. Just ask a dinosaur.
Or anyone in the path of a tornado or the vicinity of an earthquake. LIFE is chance.
This is exactly what the Great Gazoo told Dino right before that Asteroid
And great signs shall there be from heaven, there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon and in the stars... Luke 21:11&25. Friends these are signs of the soon reture of the Lord Jesus Christ repent and be ready to meet him for the big one will hit the Earth one day Rev.8:7-13.
...or it could be just a random floating rock...there are a few billion of them out there...is every on that comes near earth have the honor of being sent by jesus?
That is a matter of probability, not religion.
Is the new billboard on Rt 10 a sign from heaven?
Are you saying Jesus is throwing rocks at us? What would be the point? Please explain yourself.
Wow. If I could only get a nickle for every time an meteor strikes the earth and all humanity is "doomed to judgement". The Geminids and Perseids were especially "frightening" this year. Doomsday cults have been using the same line for millenia – just ask Rev Jones' relatives.
Oops, thank God there's no cause for alarm
Another asteroid? I have only one thing to say – folks in Russia, duck!
Don't worry be happy. Amazing how folks are going back and forth about something that has been observed and reported. The science guy (Arizona State) knows that JPL and NASA won't tell us. Vector space, gravitation pull, relativity are all real and tangible, E=MC^2. My god and yes I believe in a higher being, (as in studying where we all came from, the big question "WHY" and what is next) but no one is going to help us but US! When the end comes we won't know until its over if that is any comfort to those who get all scared. So let me help you people that go back and forth about religion. Your faith is a tool to keep you on a path to be a better person, your science is to make you a smarter person so you can become a bettter person. They go hand in hand. It is the collision of those that can't understand basic faith and science, well you are just hanging out. Might be a cool thing to do, but i won't be depending on you if it hits the fan. So a little help from someone who walks the path, evolution doesnt tell us exactly where we came from, the bible over simplifies where we came from, once again, tangible observations. So I will for the rest of my life use both. No tool is absolute. No one is absolutely correst. the odds of being 100% correct would mean you have 100% of facts. We know because of science and varibles that it is almost (Note: almost) always impossible. Good luck people free your minds, you might live longer.
religion and faith, the tool of war-mongers and a greedy clergy?
at least any coming destruction caused by an asteroid would be non-discrimitory, as opposite to all the destruction we have seen in the name of faith and religion!
Shut the front door!!
Thank you for using your brain and your faith to give a reasoned answer! God Bless.
With two significant meteor/meteorite events in the last hundred years, and the advent of detection systems with the information that they now bring to us, it gives me pause to consider that a rock the size of a city block, on a collision course with earth, might only be detected just before just before it hits. One, will the peoples of earth be informed; two, will it make any difference? Scripture says an event of this nature is in earth's future, just not sure when, and the result will be the destruction of a significant portion of earth's population. This not now a hypothesis but an actuality. How should individuals and the peoples of earth prepare for this highly probable event? Acts 2:38 – This verse is provided for review and analysis and critical determination of applicability.
you simply entered the wrong bilding.
save your sermon for the sheep-like church-followers...
Sermon? No, just an observation that it is refreshing to see science finally catching up with the Bible.
Science catching up with the bible? the bible is ancient fairytales filled with errors.
Pastor, im sure u r aware of the basic principles of science and common sense right? You do know that plants require the sun to survive right (photosynthesis)? Also, the reason the earth and the other planets revolve around the sun was because the sun was here first.
But in genesis, god created the earth on the first day, plants on the 3rd day, and the sun and the stars on the 4th day. This is wrong! completely wrong. If the bible is so great and penned by god, how did god get the order of creation wrong. Did god really think that his plants would grow without a sun?? did god really think that the earth would revolve around the sun without the sun present when the earth formed?
I would like u to preach to ur laity about these errors in genesis and let them decide if the bible could be the word of god, or not.
Let's get the Bible "creation" sequence right:
First – Nothing (no "physical" existance of the universe)
Second – Light
Third – Coalescence of cosmic matter
Fourth – Formation of planet/panetoids (earth being the primary because this is where we live)
Fifth – Formation of the plant "kingdom" on earth
Sixth – Formation celestial bodies (beginning of "time" as we understand it today)
Seventh – Formation of waterborne forms of life on earth
Eighth – Formation of "land based" forms of life on earth
Ninth – Formation of humans on earth
The evolutionary model follows this pattern. The division between "creation" and "evolution" is the understanding of what "existed" before number one of the sequence (and how all the energy of the universe came into being) and the mechanism that brought about the transition from the first to the second steps in the sequence.
Don't agree with you folks saying th Bible is anchent fairtales.
Lot of prophsey's from the Bible have come true, and in time, the rest will too.
Give it the study you have your science and you can learn much from the Bible.
Won't be on this blog again, but hope you keep an open mind when you speak about the Bible and science.
Some higher being than you created this world (in whatever way you wish to believe it).
So be humble and thank the Lord for every morning you awake to see and enjoy.
PastorPaul, when all of these atheists see in fear the asteroids or meteors hurling right towards them they'll wish they had been Believers of the Word, believe me! But by then it will be too late. They should surely know better by Now. After all, what does it hurt to Believe. In effect, it could just Save Their Life Eternally.
The question is, why so many lately??? We are definitely NOT living right down here on earth. and someone has his finger pointed driectly at us!
Its not that there are "so many lately", its that we are only now detecting them due to advanced technologies and more numerous observation posts. And we are "seeing more" of the smaller ones that actually hit because we are occupying more of the earth's crust than ever before. Just because we are seeing more doesn't mean that there IS more, its just we're only now noticing. This isn't some nebulous sign from God... its just science.
well said!
any asteroid with any brain would change its trajectory if it could read all the postings concerning this topic 😉
yes, and the scientific possibilities of us being missed by asteroids indefinitely is well...let's just say, live every day as if its your last!

In case they have miscalculated the trajectory of the asteroid i will give you some last tips.
You need to bend over forward, grab your legs and then kiss your behind goodbye..
all of the extra activity like asteroids,meteors,etc...is all because we have a small solar system coming our way from behind our sun.eventually we will be able to see a second sun like they are seeing in australia now at sunset and i think at sunrise to,it is the sun from another solar system that will pass very close to earth and may cause a-lot of problems for us.that system has a-lot of these space material with it,that is why we all of a sudden have this and that coming at us ,watch out earth.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
Another solar system would have a star, even if it was a brown dwarf, if it were close to us we'd know it by now. And Australia certainly wouldn't be seeing a brown dwarf with the naked eye.
Stop troll and stop spreading misinformation. Its people like you that get the gullible all riled up over nothing.
You were fast asleep during science classes I see...
A mind is a terrible thing when it's wasted.
ummm ... Jimmy? ... Mommy's birth control pills are not like vitamin C. You can't pop one after the other, and only pee out the excess. Put them down, go back to class, and try to actually learn something, ok?
@eta_carinae... I was entertaining returning to college to pursue Astrophysics. If you dont mind my asking in such a way, its got to be crazy rearding, right? Can you give me any quick advice that may help down the road as I move forward in my goals?
The Asteroid is a premptive strike, trick by the North Koreans
It was just a couple months ago that we were told that 95% of all the dangerous impactors were known and charted. Now we're having asteroids the size of city blocks DISCOVERED just as they're about to fly by??
Yep, kinda makes you wonder what NASA REALLY knows. I mean they wouldn't tell us anyway if there was a big one coming because they'd want to reduce panic – but what is actually causing the panic is the fact asteroids that are really close to us and of decent size to cause serious damage.
Sigh. NASA isn't who is finding these asteroids. Teams of amateur astronomers find them.
What! Don't tell me you're surprised to find out they are lying to us?
I doubt it's surprise my friend, they've been doing it for years!
its just a matter of time!!
We know most of the world killers, that one is big, it would do a lot of damage potentially, but its definitely not a world killer.
Nobody told us that. What are you smoking?
Dangerous impactors are 1000 meters or larger. This one is 80 meters. That is almost 2000 times smaller in volume.
5% of infinite space is quite a large area. On the scale of the universe these objects are infintesimal. Additionally, this object would be devestaing for the area impacted but the Earth would continue to spin and life would go on.
You want to be scared? They did not lie. The ones they are tracking so far make this one look like a football... They are tracking the ones that will have a global impact, not simply destroy a city. They need a bigger budget to find more of the smaller ones and a higher percentage of the bigger ones.
eta_carinae, since you're an astronomer, do you think Eta Carinae has a good chance of going nova in our lifetime?
It may have already exploded but we have yet to see the light, but know one really knows.
There is no point in even reading about this. They would never let the population know if there was a huge asteroid on the way of colliding with earth. The panic would kill millions of people so it wont happen. You will just see a bright flash as in Russia but brighter. And then its over for humanity.
Space rocks sure are popular these days. Close encounters or bust! According to the ancients, a comet in the sky was a bad sign of things to come. It might be time for nasa to get to work on ways to keep space rock from getting too close. Ill pay extra tax money to keep space rocks away from me. Seems like a good investment....
They waste what they get already. Watch "The Money Masters" on Youtube to see how misinformed everyone is about the deficit. Watch "America – Freedom to Fascism" to see how misinformed everyone is about taxes. They steal trillions of dollars more than would be needed if the system was honest! More taxes? Humbug!
Yep, Rick.. sad state, the way things really work, isn't it? 🙁
NASA gets by with less than $20B a year. You spend more on pizza.
There are countless chunks of rocks out there whizzing by the Earth, and they've been doing so for millions upon millions of years. Once in an eon, one hits the Earth, causes mass extinctions, and the planet moves on with new life. But no need for you to worry. Your life span could be, what? 60, 70, 80 years? Compared to the life span of this planet, measured in billions of years, there isn't really much of a chance that you are going to see this happen. I'd worry more about crashing that SUV you are driving or having a massive heart attack from those McBurgers you've been eating for years. Live your life, be healthy, be curious, be helpful and be happy. But don't let the media worry you about this stuff, for life is too short and meaningless to worry about flying space rocks, invisible magical powers, and conspiracy theories.
This was only just discovered Sunday? Because it is only the size of a city block? So does that mean we could have hundred of Russian sized asteroids set up to hit us all at once on Monday and not even know it? Nice detection system we have! With the frequency we've seen these in the last month, I wouldn't be surprised it the sky started raining asteroids within the next few months...
Looking for these things is like looking for a black rock in a coal mine with the lights off.
Just read and believe the BIble. it is true. KJV
If God is perfect, why did he have to send his son to die to save us all (A blood offering)
If God is all powerful, why did he have to send his son to die to save us all? Why not say, I forgive you, follow my law and you shall go to heaven instead of spending years sacrificing animals, then sacrificing his son for no actual purpose since he's all powerful. Nothing was stopping him from letting his followers into heaven.
Why does Jesus's life and sacrifice mirror a very similar religion that predates Christianity (virgin birth, blood sacrifice, etc).
If the Bible is literal, why did God lie to everyone?
He didn't have to do anything. It was a favor to you.
So he has his son tortured for no reason because an all mighty God wouldn't need a blood sacrifice in the first place to forgive someone for their sin.
Think about that for a minute. Before Jesus, he was powerless to help you unless you sacrificed an animal. That doesn't seem powerful at all.
Christianity is one of the oddest religions out there, but frankly most of them are fairly wacky. And its the religious that see news of asteroids and yell "We are seeing more asteroids now because God is threatening us due to our sinful nature." Huh?!? We are seeing more asteroids now because we have better technology and more computerized telescopes scanning the skies. The real difference between religion and science is that science doesn't need you to believe it for it to be true and meaningful.
Agreed Beth, most of the scientific theories are true whether someone believes them or not.
Not arguing for or against religion but the answer is free will. Try to use that brain a little bit more.
For Shane, who says that most scientific theories are true whether someone believes them or not. Well, Shane, how do you feel about irony? Because, bud, 100% of the Bible is true, whether ANYONE believes it or not. And you will agree with that fact one day, either here on earth, or after you die. But, believe it, you will.
@Doug The Bible is wrong on many accounts

Sorry, the bible is mostly lie
Your bible starts off getting the very first verse wrong. It goes downhill from there. Your bible is wrong on many, many things. Sorry.
Jesus played dead for your sins.
I guess its easier to be 'born again' than to grow up...right?!
Are most of you seriously arguing with a man of science? Really? This man knows what he's talking about, its his profession, something he spent several years in schools learning and studying. Seriously, amateurs, and bible thumpers, please refrain from further coming across as complete and total morons. You're big guy in the clouds doesn't exist, you're wasting your time arguing scientific facts with a fairytale book written by men about a nonexistent celestial being. Just stop already.
On your knees, Amanda! This time for prayer. calnewlanministries.com
dude, your losing it. find some compassion. The science they embrace as their god proves the existence of mine. quit arming them with your piosity.
Please keep you faith based god out of our reality based lives...!
Now that I'm done laughing...man of science! I have the sum of humanity's knowledge at my fingertips and I'm supposed to honor someone who is good at math?? Sensing deeper meaning behind your words...is he your teacher, lover, brother etc...? He will be ok. You on the other hand...Who was it That first claimed the universe had a beginning???
The same group of scientifically ignorant bronze-age nomadic shepherds who got the very first verse in your bible wrong.
/high5 Primewonk
Godless fool. You admitted that the Bible was the first to claim a beginning and then said the first verse is wrong? "In the Beginning...." Oh, you are assuming the "God Created" part is wrong. That is not science. Science is objective. Ah, by the way, Christianity is not one of the oldest religions. Not by a long shot.
Amanda – you base this conclusion on what, exactly? Your own common sense? You reveal your ignorance with your post. You should at least take some private time to actually study what it is you so easily dismiss. The Bible is historically and archaelogically provable. And it goes way, way beyond that. Open your eyes and learn.
eta_carinae and klaus: I'm waiting...
In the galactic pool game – let's hope that the earth is not the 8 ball. We are perfectly capable of destroying this planet ourselves. We don't need any help from stray asteroids.
The Earth has been following this same path through the solar system for about 4 billion years now. Thankfully, most of the things that could hit us already have.
I love how a simple asteroid missing us yet again turns into a debate on wether or not God exists!? Will you monkeys never learn? The media is gonna tell us how many pebbles, stones, meteors, comets, asteroids, etc; are gonna be "cruisin by" because its the latest and greatest thing to talk about! Stop arguing about the existence of God and focus more on the world around you that has come to be! One day we will all be worm food. Get over yourselves!
all this because they can't get a new pope fast?
if there's one that is going to hit earth and they knew about it.... you bet it wont be on the news until they get all the bill gates, steve jobs into a super bunker.
People always seem to forget about things like amateur astronomers with sophisticated telescopes, math skills and the internet. A big object on a collision course with Earth isn't something that "they" could hide these days, since any number of private citizens can track such things.
Because nobody has any telescopes except for the elite watching the sky right?
to eta_carinae. hello?? We laugh at what was scientific "truth" in the past. In the future, they will laugh at what is called truth now. Its not the truth if you can add to it to make it better. Truth does not change. Once you know the truth, it is immutable. It is unfortunate that your superior intellect resorted to insult.
But a huge amount – the majority will not be laughed at. You are arguing from a false premise.
Do you believe in God?
"Do you believe in God?"

"There's no danger of it hitting our planet." I think the Russians can tell you that it isn't the ones that you can see that you have to worry about.
The Sun lies between 25,000 and 28,000 light years from the Galactic Center of the galaxy and moving closer every day as we travel in space. It takes the Solar System about 225–250 million years to complete one orbit of the galaxy (a galactic year). We are moving at a rapid pace towards the center and passing into unknown zones filled with space dust and debris. Its predicted and possible that our solar system may even pick up new planets. We are seeing an increase in asteroids, meteorite showers and even other unknown phenomena.
NO we are not – seriously where are you getting this crap. Apart from the two numbers – nothing else in your post made any sense whatsoever.
How about his name? Can we count that as being another thing that makes sense in his post?
Maybe, if not sensible, at least accurate.
what incredible inaccuracy spacey
Wow that is sure an ignorant post. The universe is expanding not contracting.
Funny how this year it seems there is a comet, asteroid or meteor doing fly byies every other week and some of them undetected until they are right on us. A good prediction would be at least several Russian type incidents this year.
Of course all the experts say they all have no chance of hitting earth but try telling that to the people in Russia.
The Mayans must have witnessed quite a show at the beginning of their cycle which just ended.
Oh yea I forgot the Mayans ...
You do realize that we are in a spiral arm, and that arm is orbiting the galactic center, we are not approaching it, nor are we going away from it (except for a minor fluctuation probably, but generally speaking)
We better know that God is holding these things back from doing major damage to us. God is most Great!
Amen!
Amen! The Jebus sword will protect us from the everlasting threat of merciless heavenly rock tribulation!

looks like someone may have had bad experiences with "religious" people. Just remember, people who call themselves "Christian" are not necessarily so. They need to be like Jesus to be Christian, not just say they are!
The difference between your stupidity and my intelligence is that my intelligence has its limits...!? It's OK... if you pray for me then I will think for you!
Is an asteroid the size of a city block really "huge"? I'd like to see one enter earth's atmosphere just for the show. God is in control, not man. calnewlanministries.com
No – 80 metres is not big. And most cities the blocks are separated by more than 80m.
However – 80 metres is going to make a pretty decent hole in the ground if it is a nickel/iron mass – and even an airburst from a stony object would be wayyyyyy bigger than in Russia recently.
Careful now, Cal, God just might send it right over your house with you in it. You're house would be flattened by the shockwave and then set on fire by the blast of heat from the friction with the atmosphere.
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:
I think that the unusual recent emphasis upon reportage of near objects in outer space is silly.
Unless it is evidence of NASA's unease with its own inept public expressions on celestial phenomena.
NASA has done a pitiful job of detecting objects approaching earth.
It does no good to notice them by happenstance.
It does no good to learn of them less than five years in advance.
NASA is worth nothing as an agency of the Federal Government unless it can easily detect all objects of any size greater than five feet in diameter which might pass within twenty million miles of the earth.
We should have achieved absolute command of such technology fifty years ago.
Now, it seems a Keystone Cops Buffoon-Like Comedy of Embarrassment to watch NASA flounder in a sphere of activity of which it should have supreme mastery.
I always have been and always will be an unflagging supporter of NASA and all outer space exploration.
However, I am extremely disillusioned with NASA's celestial observation capability.
We are the greatest country in the world. We must have the ability to detect anything anywhere in outer space, especially objects which may pass within twenty million miles of earth.
Have a Dovely.
Sincerely yours,
Caleb.
As a professional astrophysicist, you sir, haven't a damn clue what you are "trying" to talk about. Utterly clueless.
Are you calling Caleb a professional astrophysicist?
Clarification – I am the professional astrophysicist – Caleb is more likely a gardener or a burger flipper.
What, as opposed to an amateur? Credentials please.....ANY!
to cattleprod – Been an astrophysicist for 25 years now. Currently at Arizona State.
I'm the Grand Magister of the Wireless Empire, elected by the High Cyberelves of Beta Carotene IV.
This is true because it is the internet.
How about inventing a transporter how's NASA doing with that?
We're running this guy for Congress. I bought every word of that hackfest until Astrodoc showed up. Kid, you've got potential.
Ever read Shelley's Ozymandias??? How about ancient history? The greatest kingdoms, empires and republics fall the hardest and most completely. It's just our turn
If you look at the video from SLOOH, you see the asteroid moving against the background of stars. I recall from my sailing days that if you see a ship and it's bearing is not changing, you will collide with it. So wouldn't this apply also to three dimensional objects? If a rock is going to collide with earth, it will appear stationary in the sky and thereby almost impossible to detect against the millions nay billions of points of light observable with a telescope.
Turn off the Sci-Fi channel, kids, and open a Bible (KJV). You don't need man's science; you need God's TRUTH! calnewlanministries.com
We don't need bible, science is our truth.
You have no truth.
Godless moron...How is science truth when it changes dramatically constantly. Your concept of truth right now WILL BE scorned in 20 years when new theories replace what you embrace now. Truth???
Cattleprod - How is religion truth when everybody's is different?
You need at the very least a good wack upside that daft chunk of empty space sitting on your shoulders. It may not work but there's certainly nothing to lose by trying. God only exists in the vast emptyness between the ears of drones like yourself.
Hey godless idiot – prove it...
To cattleprod – where is this endless changing? I hear this complaint all the time from laymen – most of science does not change. Huge sections of physics are essentially unchanged in centuries – even the big advances in the 20th century have not changed significantly in decades.
This complaint is only made by the scientifically uneducated.
We laugh at what was scientific "truth" in the past. In the future, they will laugh at what is called truth now. Its not the truth if you can add to it to make it better. Truth does not change. Once you know the truth, it is immutable
What unintelligible hogwash. Did you read that back to yourself before you posted it?
"the truth isn't the truth if you can add to it? ??????
What the hell does that really mean?
let me simplify it for you. it was called truth that the earth was the center of the universe. was that the truth??like i said.the truth does not change.
you are searching for the truth and have not found it. formulate the final unification theory and you can possibly call that truth, you mis-quoted me too. you might want to be more thorough.
@eta carinae, just ignore @cattle prod it's not worth the effort. @cattle prod does not understand how science works and never will unless he can be deprogrammed from his religious addiction.
You wrote "Hey godless idiot – prove it..." Do you even listen too yourself? That's rich coming from someone who blindly worships the big sky fairy. Course, convincing a lunitic of anything except sky fairies is tricky buisness. I pray–actually–let me rephrase that; I fervrently wish some invisible buddy buddy force would take pity on me and smite all the weak minded chumps like you. I'm not going to hold my breath though.
there is nothing blind about it
Again, your own words "there is nothing blind about it" You whorship an invisible being that's everywhere all at once but has never been seen. Now that's blnd as blind gets.
and you still didn't prove it
"and you still didn't prove it" That would presume I'm arguing with you. I'm not. I'm flat out ridiculing you. Your unreasoning insistsance of a personal relationship with a figment of your imagination disqualifies you as far as an argument goes.
He told me to tell you that he loves you and wants you to join him,,,
Turn off the Sci-Fi Channel, turn on the History Channel (but DVR "The Bible" for when something new isn't on).
So God's truth will tell us exactly where every potential threat in the vastness of space is? The Bible has a list somewhere of every single time an asteroid or meteor with strike earth and when that will happen? Wow... your Bible is much more complete than mine.
Your Bible is an obsolete mythology generated by an ancient semi-nomadic tribe that was focused on genocide and conquest. Your Bible is a book that instructs the followers of your specific religion to not only hate, but to destroy/eliminate that which speaks out against it. You Bible is no more holy than the Qaran. You Bible is a book of hate and war. Only once in the entire book is there every a mention of peace and love, what was supposed to be the focus of the myth, and instead of following the great teacher you have turned your backs on him and began practicing hate and destruction again.
Take you Bible and shove it, because science has done more to promote health and peace than your Bible ever has.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Do you know your purpose here on earth? Why are you here on earth? The bible is the only source of all knowledge here on earth and the universe.. To understand the bible you have to read it search and ask to gain knowledge.. Read specially the Revelation for the tribulation period is made up of seven seals (Rev. 6:1-17; 8:1), seven trumpets (Rev. 8:7-9:21; 11:15), and seven bowls (Rev. 16:1-19:2). All 21 judgments are revealed chronologically and cover the seven-year period of tribulation.
Actually, it's the SyFy channel now. But if you're up for some real reading, you may want to pick up a copy of the Enuma Elish and Epic of Gilgamesh to see how the Hebrews copied the creation myth. Quite fascinating!
What floors me about idiots like you is that you call it "God's truth"... When has "God" ever written a word? Hmm? That's right.. NEVER. When has "God" spoken to man? That's right, NEVER.
Just because man made up something to worship so that they didn't feel all alone in this big universe, doesn't make it true... You know that the Romans and Greeks made up their own "gods" too, don't you? Yeah, that was their "truth".
/facepalm
Sci-Fi means science fiction. That is fiction – not real. I watch real science channels. Science and religion have no disagreement as far as I am concerned.
The big bang is complicated but everything is moving from where is started. We are moving away from the edge of the universe hence more space derbies as we pass through this zone.
Your remedial knowledge of reality is evident. Why would you even bother commenting about the big bang when it is apparent you have a VERY limited conceptualization of it? Please don't continue to embarrass yourself by speaking your opinion about the big bang. It is so very simple to educate yourself rather than spouting what you think without any basis in fact. Here this might help you! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17jymDn0W6U
STOP the nonsense – where do you people get your science understanding from? A cornflake box read with bleary eyes the morning after a binge?
eta_carinae - I appreciate your thoughtful comments.
I usually avoid work related topics on the internet – 95% of the people are utterly clueless and then when you do correct them they call you a liar. As I always say to people – someone has to work in astrophysics – it just so happens I am one of them.
Galactic warming.
funny how this year seems to be a year of warning for rocks flying past us in space. When you look at the direction of the United States Government whether repub or democrat, maybe we need a rock to hit us so we can start over. Oh no i best watch what I say so a drone doesnt blow me up for free speech. you damn morons.
Hmmmm this year and space rocks is there new tech finding these things or is it truly a cosmic year
actually, the solar system is moving into the center plane of the galaxy, so there is a higher level of cosmic debris to contend with.
Thats a oretty dumb response because the universe moves at the same speed our galaxy doesn 't have rockets on it's but think for a minute will you.
If by crossing the plane, you mean in the next 30 to 50 million years, than OK. I wouldn't say that is the reason we are seeing more close calls though. There are simply more eyes on the sky now. We've been getting bombarded by space debris for the entire life of this planet, and there has been near misses that we never knew about. There is no math to back up a claim that we are seeing more rocks because we are drifting to galactic center. Humankind's existence is too small of a sample size to make that claim.
Nope – we are some 75 light years above the plane and still moving farther from it – in about 30 million years we will come back towards and pass through it.
And it wouldn't have any noticeable effect anyway.
You fell for a hoax.
Didn't science discover periodic extinctions about every 64 million years? And wasn't the dinosaur extinction about 64 million years ago?
I don't know you .. but this sudden increase of close calls ...
I get the feeling that before the end of the year .. we will experience a real impact.
hopefully not
2.5 LD is not a close call.
2.5LD?
We had one close call, this isn't a close call. If it were within the moon's orbit, maybe.
And this still isn't that big really, would do some major damage but nothing Earth shattering.
You do know that the asteroid that passed this February WAS inside the moon's orbit, right? /facepalm
"You do know that the asteroid that passed this February WAS inside the moon's orbit, right? /facepalm"
Actually it was closer then that. It passed inside the orbit most communications satellites.
Right, that was a close call. This next one isn't a close call. So its only one close call for the year, not two.
Our schools decided several years back that word problems were too hard, and affecting the academic scores of our students, so they removed most of them from their material. Boy howdy we're paying for it now...
ok .. the asteroid coming from billions of miles away, reach in the hundreds of thousands of miles
Yes, not so close, ..
the reality is that it was minutes or at best hours away from collision
All I am saying is that we are not ready ... the next real one could be just a month or so away and there is nothing we could do
