By Buzz Aldrin, Special to CNN
Editor's note: Buzz Aldrin, best known for his Apollo 11 moonwalk, holds a doctoral degree in astronautics and, at the age of 83, continues to wield influence as an international advocate of space science and planetary exploration. Aldrin’s new book "Mission to Mars: My Vision for Space Exploration," co-authored with space journalist Leonard David, is a blueprint and strategy for American-led presence of human beings from Earth on the Red Planet Mars. He is on Twitter at @therealbuzz.
We need to get the world excited again about space exploration and have the pioneering spirit to reach beyond our boundaries and current capabilities.
I want a new generation of space explorers to feel as I did when it was my privilege to take part in the Apollo program that landed the first humans on the surface of the Moon. This is important, not only for the USA but for the rest of the world.
Let me tell you why.
Buzz Aldrin's new book is called "Mission to Mars: My Vision for Space Exploration."
The dream of space travel has been a lure of humankind for centuries – to reach for the moon and even the stars.
But it wasn’t until the 20th Century that man took his first powered flight. It was in 1903 on a windy morning over the sands of Kitty Hawk that the Wright Brothers’ Flyer took their first flight, defying gravity. My mother, Marion Moon, was born that same year.
Just 66 years later, Neil Armstrong and I stepped onto the moon’s magnificent desolation, fulfilling the dreams of millions. But it has been over four decades since we walked on the lunar surface and in my view, with too little progress to show for it.
I have always felt Mars should be the next destination following our landings on the moon. I’ve been very vocal about this for a long time. Today the dream of reaching the red planet looks like it is finally getting closer to becoming a reality.
Thanks to NASA’s Curiosity rover, as well as the spunky Opportunity rover, both now operating on the Martian landscape, these robots are revealing to us more than ever before details about the planet that is more Earth-like than any we have discovered thus far. And with each image relayed back to Earth, every measurement taken, there’s a growing familiarity with distant Mars.
For me, as well as other onlookers, those early color images beamed back from the Curiosity rover showed layered buttes and other features suggestive of the southwestern United States. I’m hoping that familiarity of another world will pique the curiosity of the young people of the world into the idea of exploring beyond Earth, our moon and on to Mars.
In my mind, there is an evolving comfort level with Mars, and it’s a perspective that summons us to push forward. The challenge ahead is epic, but historic. We are on a pathway to homestead the red planet.
What we've done on Mars and what's next
Obviously I am passionate about forging our future in space. People ask me all the time – why do we need to go to Mars or why do we even need a space program?
Because we feel good about ourselves and the future of our country and by venturing into space we improve life for everyone here on Earth. The scientific advancements and innovations that come from this type of research create products and technology that we use in our daily lives and provide even more convenience to people all over the world every day.
So how do we get people excited about space again? And the big question is how do we get there? We need a plan. We also need a leader in the world to state a public goal with a specific time line.
There’s a window of opportunity ahead for a bold, Kennedy-like proclamation that placed the nation in the 1960s on a moon-bound trajectory: “I believe this nation should commit itself, within two decades, to commencing American permanence on the planet Mars.”
Buzz Aldrin was the second man to walk on the moon. Here he is in 1969.
We’re talking about multiple missions of adventurers to eventually settle and colonize Mars. To succeed at Mars, you cannot stop with several one-shot forays to its surface.
Years ago I devised a method with cycling orbits of spacecraft on continuous trajectories between the Earth and Mars. By using interplanetary cyclers, I feel, and other space experts agree with me, this is the most economical transportation system concept between the Earth and Mars. Using this capability, I believe the timeline of crewed missions to Mars is between 2035-2040.
So how do we accomplish this?
First, the U.S. needs to continue to be the human space transportation leader. I think we should capitalize on the dynamism of the commercial market to develop a runway landing system that can truly become the basis for the U.S. highway to space.
Second, I worry that we may be caught in an unproductive race to replant U.S. taxpayer-supported footprints on the moon. We should be using the lunar program to accomplish foreign policy goals. So let’s focus on cooperation with our international partners.
Thirdly, and most importantly, we should direct the focus of NASA efforts on establishing a permanent human presence on Mars by the 2030 to 2040 decade.
I firmly believe that accomplishing these three goals will do more to advance U.S. national interests than any other policy initiative we could envision. We have, or can affordably develop the technology, to send humans on various missions towards Mars and especially its two Martian moons.
To reach beyond low Earth orbit requires a progressive suite of missions that are the vital underpinnings - a foundation - for a unified space vision. Putting in place and staying on track with a unified approach to space program activities must begin now.
Now orbiting Earth is the international space station – which is needed to conduct the vital in space research to safely send humans to Mars. We must use our station know-how to prototype specialized safe-haven, interplanetary, and taxi modules.
By implementing a step-by-step vision - just as we did with the single-seater Mercury capsule and two-person Gemini spacecraft that made Apollo possible – we can journey further and further outward.
With each step of this plan, whether it’s the utilization of the ISS for exploration, or our first visits to a truly extraterrestrial body, this vision will captivate the imagination of the entire globe.
We have worked on many of the technologies we need, let’s focus our efforts to mature the capabilities we need to successfully execute this bold mission and to support a Martian settlement. There is really very little new science required. So the question is whether we invest the tens to hundreds of billions of dollars the U.S. will spend on human spaceflight into a return to the moon, or do we invest in a fundamental transition of the human condition.
We are at an inflection point. We can choose to do what is easy, what is safe. Or we can choose to make a difference. The choice to me is absolutely clear. There is no other choice than to commit to Mars.
Humans need to explore, to push beyond current limits, just like we did nearly 44 years ago that enabled me to stand at Tranquility Base on the moon. In reaching outward with method and intent to Mars, America is once again in the business of a vital, meaningful and future-focused space exploration program.
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Buzz Aldrin.
The more knowledge a person learnt the sooner find out he do not know as much he thought he did. People traveling through out our universe for time inmoral. Matter of fact human kind did not originated on this planets but were populate by an ancient civilization far in the distant past.
Wow! That's the old "Battlestar Galactica" opening translated into... into... what is that, authentic frontier gibberish?
One singular fact that proves it iis mpossible for man to live in space is the “Bowel Effect”. The Bowel Effect is the fact that one cannot have an effective BM in space. Even with the aide of prunes and a high fiber diet, one still becomes constipated. Over time the ingested food will cause the astronaut to explode. Poooop flies everywhere and gets all inside the spaceship. On the walls and control panels and everywhere. It is a poooop festival. Prunes.
Yeah sure cause that's happened on SO many missoins
Actually, it did.. exchanges about pooooop floating in the cabin and other gory details can be found in official mission transcripts of astronauts as well.. These are some nasty reality based details no one likes to talk about, but do happen.
Oh come on, the guy is obviously joking. Don't be so gullible and lighten up a bit.
It is a little bit funny, too, in an adolescent sort of way
That's why a ring-shaped space station a la Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" is needed. Spin provides creates centrifugal force which induces artificial gravity. A gravity somewhere between the Earth's and the Moon's in strength will allow humans to acclimate themselves during trips from the Earth to the Moon and back.
See you next Wednesday...
"See you next Wednesday..."
Would've been hilarious if Commander Poole's father had said "See you next Tuesday!" X-D

Micro gravity is the issue, so generate some radial acceleration, spin up a module, remember the habitation ring on the Discovery, from 2001?
I think the reason so many tefuse to believe us Whites were the first to visit the moon is they are jealous. Yes it was us, European American White People that first explored space and are inventors of all things worthwhile. Obama's democrats can't stand this. They lie by saying this or that never happened. They are saddened by their inferior ape like minds.
Racist. White devil.
racist troll.
Soviets launched the first satellite into orbit, a Soviet cosmonaut was the first man in space, Soviets landed the first probe on Venus. Shakespeare is best appreciated in original Russian. So enough of your David Duke "Euro American" racist trolling.
Nikita Krushchev: Comrade Gagarin. Did you see God up there?
Yuri Gagarin: Yes, I saw Comrade God. He said to tell you he doesn't exist.
Ethnic Russians are a mixture of Scandinavians and Slavs, Caucasians
"Caucasians" are from the Caucasus region (you know, like the Tsarnaev brothers and Josef Stalin). Besides, "race" is a myth and nothing more. Read up on genetic haplogroups and you'll understand why, hopefully. All humans are genetic mutts comprised of numerous genetic stocks, like it or not. So anyone who thinks of themselves as being "racially pure" are only deluding themselves, and are not fooling anyone.
I guess when you go to a hospital, you only ask for a blood from a white man? or medicines made by a white man? quit being the biggest idiot around here dude.. so not worth the trouble of getting bashed
We could hope he only asks for meds made by white men, it might get him out of the gene pool.
The Dogon people of Mali travel all around our solar system millions of years ago. As of to day they know more about our solar systen than NASA do now don^t take my word for it look it up for yourself.
Yes, the Doggone people DID travel allllllll around the universe. IN THEIR MINDS!!! They smoked the local drug-leaf, you utter and contemptible moron!
If you believe we did not go to space then how do you explain fiber optics, microprocessors, silicon, Kevlar, etc. All of these discoveries are directly related to NASA research. NASA deserves more funding to keep us ahead in important new technologies.
Aliens.
Even CNN states at the bottom of the article "the opinions expressed here are solely those of the author,". It's just an opinion piece. Even CNN knows it isn't based on facts. The Apollo Program was a fake.
Dance monkey! DANCE!!!!
You are my beech now monkey!
You do what I tell you to do.
Im curious, crappydanrogers. Why is it important for APollo to be all fake? We already know the govt' lies, so why?
I think Dan might be a lesbean.
When looking at how far we've come, from stone tools to detecting Earth-like planetary masses around Sun-like stars. Landing a rover on Mars the size of a small car. And yet people still don't believe that the Moon Landings were real. It is astounding how people could have so little faith in human ingenuity in the face of such overwhelming evidence. I feel sorry for them.
Only sad lonely elderly people with limited education and living in nursing homes still accept the fairy tale of the "astronauts."
No way they sent some 83 year old drooling octogenarian into space. I bet he can hardly even walk. An 83 year old spaceman. LOL.
You do understand that time passes, do you not?
Oh, Judath Prietht! Don't feed the trollths!
Mea culpa.
Eighty three ears old. I hope he brought along his walker and extra depends for the moon walk.
I agree with the low space orbit theory. It is very hard to believe the lunar lander touched down on the moon, then was able to hook back up with the orbiter vehicle. Then return to earth. I'd say impossible with today's technology, much less that of 1968.
why is it hard to believe? Explain the hard part. Then, google said hard part and read about how it was done.
There, hard part made easy. google. And don't bother googling for conspiracies, or questions such as "did man really go to the moon?" to find support of anything.
Hell, just go read the yahoo responses on "How did the lunar ascent module get out of the moons gravitational field?"
Better yet, if you are still uncertain, but just HAVE to know WITH CERTAINTY, go learn some physics. Then apply physics to these problems. Then, instead of being "hard to believe", you will have something more concrete to go off of.
I have a doctorate in physics from The University of Moscow. The falsehoods put forth concerning the Apollo program are astounding. The United States never successfully sent and returned a man to the lunar surface. It is a farce put forth by your government.
They don't teach about parabolic trajectories in their doctoral program? Newtonian motion? Tensor equations? Calculation of surface gravity? Friction? Calculation of radiation exposure relative to movement? Behaviour of gases under extreme pressure? God's bawls, man, does F=mA mean anything to you at all?
This is not an education to brag about, Crappydappydoo.
Judas, don't you learn? Don't feed the trolls.
Look it up. There is no University of Moscow.. This guy is baiting you.
I know. Couldn't resist, mate.
HA!, Ha: Moscow State University, est 1755 the university was renamed in honor of its founder, Mikhail Lomonosov, in 1940. Sh!t-for -brains!
And? He's still fulla $h!t.
try again troll you almost got me
I agree completely. We should have been at Mars already. Too many precious resources being wasted that could have been diverted to a Mars travel effort. People would be willing to go. Let volunteers go that do not have millions or even billions of dollars. Greed is hampering progress. Let ingenuity take charge and watch progress grow exponentially. Otherwise, we may fall behind in yet another area. If we haven't already.

No doubt our Astrounat circle the moon but to land on it surface there to many unanswer question for one going from zero to six thousand mile per hour in total darkness mate up with orbiter! if! what a feat.
i can see how it would be difficult for you to understand. your comment indicates that you are barely literate.
Anyone named Buzz should not be taken seriously.
I agree. Even the name sounds made up. Guess the government stooges couldn't think up a better name for an actor / pretend moon man.
He was born Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. He got the nickname 'Buzz' because his younger sister couldn't say 'brother', only 'buzzer'. So the nickname stuck. He had it changed to his legal first name many years ago. Buzz Aldrin is a legend and a very inspiring man: he has battled alcoholism & depression over the years and won. He is a decorated Korean War combat pilot and was arguably the first man to truly master spacewalking on Gemini 12. He and Armstrong DID land on the moon on July 20th 1969 after a hazardous descent fraught with computer problems and higher than expected fuel usage. The samples they brought back from the Sea Of Tranquility were 3.6 billion years old – PROVEN independently by scientists around the world, including America's then ideological enemies – the Soviet Union and China. Their voice and telemetry signals WERE tracked by those countries and proven to have come from the Moon. An Australian radio telescope technician that I met some years ago was talking to the Apollo 16 Astronauts live before they went to sleep – they were out of contact with Houston for a few minutes as the tracking station prepared to hand off to another, so they swapped some anecdotes and stories. To all the Conspiracy 'sheep' out there – don't follow a fraudulent, corrosive internet meme/idea. Join the real world. Apollo was REAL: meet the people who did it – go see the leftover spacecraft and rockets. Learn the amazing story of Apollo. Learn something about science, physics and history. 40 years ago America could do wonderful things in space but they threw away the interplanetary transportation system they had for the Shuttle – which is itself now gone. 40 plus years ago, America could do these things, now it chooses not to because of economics and politics. I even saw one misguided person posting here that the Apollo Astronauts landed 'at 6000 mph in the dark'. They did not – they landed in DAYTIME early in the lunar morning, with their backs to the harsh Sun and burning 8 tons of Aerozine & Nitrogen Tet to bring their velocity down to zero. And to some Conspiracy Sheep: the flag was held aloft by a stick of wire not unlike a straightened out coat hanger. Can't spend billions of taxpayer dollars and not have the Stars & Stripes visible, eh? 😉
Historians have deduced Buzz was in fact named after Joe Buzzard Johnson who was a master fib teller in the late1880s. Buzzard traveled across the old west telling made up tales about moon men and Martians. Eventually he was awarded a fake honorary doctorate for his imaginary stories. Legend has it he performed in Buffalo Bills Wild West Carnival and later on Broadway. Good old Buzzard. A legend in his own mind.
I call bullcrap on that story. He wasn't named after some tall tale teller from the old west. Who in their right mind would name their baby son after a liar and a fake? You moon conspiracy folks are way off base. There was a conspiracy but it wasn't lying about going to the moon, it was the conspiracy to cover up what they found there! Get with the program you guys. It looks to me like you haven't read much about this subject. Spend a few years researching it like I have and then we'll talk
I think Matthew may have watched one too many pretend movies about space men. I too have examined the moon rocks and they seem to be nothing more than common lava based material found all over Hawaii.
Don't bother, Matthew. Too many idiots on here who want to believe that it's impossible for man to have gone to the moon, it must have been staged, the usual drivel... Their research into events stops at conspiracy theory sites. Then expect to feel good about how right they are by responding in comments sections on topics of discussion such as going to Mars. And even if you could show them all the proof that we had gone, they would find some way to cover it up with some conspiratorial mask.
Just leave the fools be, Matthew.
On the Moon there not enough gravity to get leavege in order to push or nail a pole into it surface. For one one have a hard time touching his nose on moon without a spacesuit think what it would be like trying hammer something in moon rock surface.
Wow, Matthew. Three fake Crappydappydoo responses to one post. (possibly three and a half... can't really tell what jones is saying). you seem to have struck a nerve.
Most experts agree it is better to tell children the truth about the Easter bunny, tooth fairy, and astronauts, before the age of 12. It prevents embarissment later in life.
It didn't prevent you from becoming an embarrassment. Perhaps your educational theory is flawed.
Only an embicile would believe people ever landed on the moon.
Kinda like only an imbecile would spell imbecile 'embicile'
Dance monkey! DANCE!!!!
You are my beech now monkey!
You do what I tell you to do.
Man on the moon. Ha ha ha. Only a simpleminded troll would believe such nonsense.
Yes! I agree with Buzz completely. Come on NASA, get a PR department and show the doubters why you are well worth the money spent.
https://www.facebook.com/MarsToStay
There are two problems with getting to Mars: NASA and cost Somewhere around Apollo 17 NASA morphed into just another federal project with an incestuous relationship with its major contractors. All it can do today is lobby Congress for more money to give to Boeing, et al. Which brings up cost. It simply costs too much to put a pound into orbit. Space-X has announced a goal of bringing the cost of cargo to orbit from the Shuttle-era $50K/lb to $10K/lb, and possibly $1,000/lb in the long term. At that price point we can lift the hardware in stages to low orbit assemble it like we did the Space Station, and lift enough fuel in other launches to propel it to Mars. We'll have to work out the cintrifugal gravity issue, but that's a detail.
And incidentally, we DID go to the moon. Furthermore, the world is round, tobacco is bad for you, and there were no WMD's in Iraq when we invaded.
Please go back to school and take Physics 101. Maybe you slept in that semester.
Aww, did they teach you that the world is flat?
A manned mission to Mars is just too impractical... 90% of the cost is in maintaining the crew, very little goes into actual science. Hell, 50% of the resources are spent on the return trip.
The whole argument for manned trips by NASA has been that there are things that people can do that automated probes cannot. The technological challenge that should be put to them is to quantify those things, then work on how to get an automated probe to do them. The technology that comes out of that challenge would be just incredible, and would have many, many earthbound applications as well.
It is obvious that you are not Buzz Aldrin, and that you lack his vision. Aldrin is correct – the very act of exploration benefits mankind on earth in exponential ways that never would have been realized had we not ventured into space. The advances in engineering, medicine and materials manufacturing because of our decision to explore space have been remarkable in ways that are inconceivable to many people. That is why we have leaders and followers. Chip is obviously a follower.
Buzz Aldrin for President!
https://www.facebook.com/MarsToStay
Those things they're talking about that humans can tackle, but robots cannot? Those would be the unknown or unexpected things that can't always be foreseen ahead of time.
There's one thing robots can't do: expand the human presence beyond the Earth.
Chip the ~20 minute lag time in manned control of robotic construction indicates people driving the base construction should be in mars orbit. Possibly a Mars geosynchronous orbit. The robots would be on the surface, digging, mining, and building large underground bases. Once a base of adequate size is built and supplied, then the control crews for the robots could decend to the surface to operate in the surface structures and with the machines. Robots should lead the way but with real-time human direction nearby. The construction robotic machines could be delivered earlier than the manned orbiting station(s).
Robotic construction equipment developed for the Moon could be transported to Mars once proven. Both the Moon and Mars have lower than Earth atmospheres so air pressurized structures will be common designs on the surfaces of each. There should be a payoff to the expenditures in the Moon bases. The same robots should work on the moon first building a staging base for Mars. The Moon could deliver supplies for the trips to Mars and other Solar system bodies once a launch facility was built there. The Moon alone, when populated, can yield humanity an early insurance policy against most ELE disaster scenarios on Earth.
Just thinking out loud, here, Chip – but I think if we sent you, we could go ahead and save the 50% cost of the return trip.
We should go to Mars in 10 years not 20! Put the pressure on, make science in America cool again, and America #1!
Spin offs? There are lots of research efforts that generate spin offs. Important for people to go to Mars? Human "colony" on Mars? Why? Because it's fun to explore? Well, sure, but isn't this a little bit extreme? National prestige? Other ways of earning that. So, what if we go to Mars at enormous expense? Then what? Sorry. I just don't get it. Seems like sending some robots and instruments to Mars is useful to learn about the planet. But, why put people on Mars?? Maybe I'll read Buzz's book, but the summary doesn't offer much motivation, and the endeavor would require a LOT of motivation.
Given all of these points, it would no doubt be much easier, cheaper and safer for NASA to just fake a Mars mission...
Sure sure, just like ist easier for you to whine and moan than to go and learn anything, geez!
Lazy and apathetic, good for you!
Some exploratory adventures today may not produce significant gains for several lifetimes, but we are constantly standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. It was over 300 years between the "discovery" of America and the time it became a free nation. Had not those first voyages of discovery taken place the world would be a very different place today.
Lead, follow or get out of the way, but DO SOMETHING!
Firstly it's not that expensive. With enough focus it can be done within the existing human spaceflight budget. The reason we need a human colony on Mars is not because it is fun. In fact it will be unimaginably hard. The reason we need to do it is for economic reasons and also survival-in-redundancy. We simply have no choice in becoming a multi-planet species. It is the means by which we will not become extinct.
Wow. I wonder if Christopher Columbus had to deal with the same type of narrow-minded paranoia this talkback is producing. Sure glad he didn't have to deal with it through the Internet, mind you. (Even happier that he didn't listen to it at all, whatever the medium.)
If I remember correctly, his incentive and backing were definitely financially motivated
Others barren planets look like the surface of Mars except more craters and three Earthlike planets look like Earth except did not see large bodies of water. There were trees small stream mountain both spring and fallon on them.
Jimmy Fallon's is streaming from Mars? Hes soooooo funny!!!1!111
There are pictures of the lunar landers/modules that were used by the Apollo astronauts when they landed on and explored the moon that were photographed by the high resolution lunar imaging satellite over the past few years. Some of the pictures also show the tracks in the lunar soil made by the lunar rovers that were driven by some of the astronauts in the later missions. Anyone who believes that astronauts never visited the moon are ignorant.
I feel so sad for your poor teachers. Did you ever go to school? Maybe it was in the days before logic. Just sad. So many imbecilic remarks such as yours. Just sad.
Thank you for proving his point.
You are obviously suffering from cranial analitis.
It's funny that only very old old people believe in the silliness called the Apollo Project. Maybe they are from a simpler time where leprechauns and fairies roamed the earth – or maybe they are just senile.
Old people came out simpler because they didn't have the Internet to fact check the lying government and Media of their day. It's not their fault entirely.
Apparently you've contracted early onset senility. Or maybe you just never educated your gray matter.
Well put. That would be as stupid as posting under multiple names in a desperate attempt to persuade people that you actually have support.
Poor Buzz; I'm sure he's broken-hearted that he'll never live-up to your standards of awsomeness. But if he keeps striving and reaching for the stars, I'm sure he'll eventually be cool enough to achieve the grand accomplishment of posting snarky comments about someone else's space career, on a CNN board. Keep dreaming, Buzz!
Meh, I've been to Mars and it ain't all that. You can't get a decent cup of coffee anywhere. Plus there's only one Walmart and it was on the other side of the planet.
Well you must have been there before they opened the Mars Bars. They got everything there including but not limited to every booze and cannabis product known to earth as well as some that are only found on Mars.
Like
Love you, Buzz. But the "Space Race" is getting old. And expensive.
Git'cha @$& to Mars...
Git'cha @$& to Mars...
Git'cha @$& to Mars...
Git'cha @$& to Mars...
Git'cha @$& to Mars...
Buzz Aldrin: You have the worst face lift and botox since Joan Rivers.
Says the butthurt cavedweller with nothing better to do than insult an American legend
The sooner the truth about the Apollo frauds gets out there, the sooner Buzz Aldrin and the rest of the Apollo astronauts can quit lying (under duress). Neil would have wanted it that way!
Another flat earth society member!
Please turn yourself into the nearest psychiatric hospital. You are delusional.
Did they have flying cars and talking robots in that golden era of 1969 to 1972 to go along with the trips to other worlds? Did pigs fly back ten too?
No Crappy; they just had people who were more intelligent, more dedicated, more honest, more capable, more fearless than you will ever be.
That must be why you can see the equipment at sites of the landings with a telescope and reflect lasers off of the reflectors they placed on the surface to prove it. Yep, must be it.
The equipment was sent up there in UNMANNED missions. Russia has laser reflectors too called Lunokhod, they never even claimed to have sent men to the Moon.
NoNONONONO!!! LUNOKHOD RADIO CONTROL DIDNT WORK!!IT WAS RUN BY A KGB SUICIDE DWARF!!!FACT!!!!
crappy gov,
The 'spaceflight' fakers are performing "demonstration programs" per the Space Act and therefore are protected from any kind of 'prosecution'. The 'astronaut corps' (as they call it) is indeed top secret military and their goal/aim is to keep the masses duped with astro-evolution. NASA even claims that we 'evolved' via the e-to-w orbiting moon, go figure...
Here is another good site for those who still think that 'landing' on the moon inside a tin-can was "real"....
http://apolloreality.atspace.co.uk/
You are a persistent nut, I'll give you that.
Disiz FUNNY!!!

Moon hoax NOT!!!!1!11!
Judging by the name, another GOPer. Is anyone honestly surprised that he hates science, education, and human progress, even as he reaps the benefits of them all? If he had any integrity, he'd toss out his computer and join an Amish community.
You were too big an airhead to spend 10 minutes to see if the Apollo missions were fake or not! Shame on you sir!
You were such a big airhead you believed they were fake after investing only 10 minutes into the matter.
Soooooo .... every government on the planet is in on the cover-up? Must be. Do you REALLY believe that the Soviet Union wasn't monitoring every blip that came from those transmissions? You can bet your last ruble that IF there were ANY inconsistencies or anomalies in ANY of the moon landings that the USSR would have been BLASTING (no pun intended) the US for it!!!
Apollo deniers = epic fail!
Th USA gave the Russians a sweetheart grain deal in the 1970s during a famine to keep their mouths shut. The USA and USSR also collaborated on Skylab later in the 1970's.
Please make sure you take this up with any of the astronauts who went there. I am sure they will set you straight. I bet Buzz would even punch you in the face. He can do that and get away with it because unlike you, he is brave and honorable.
Buzz, Neil & Michael Collins all ran away when confronted about the faked Apollo 11 footage!
Leave Obama and his Democratic give away team in office and we will never see another NASA like we did in the past. They are to busy lying to us and stuffing their pockets with graft and corruption. Anyone that tries to dispute that is living in a fantasy world with blinders on. Since we now live in LBJ's Great Society, and the takers number over 50% we will never see a Republican President again much less a recovery to a middle class.
LBJ made it impossible for a Republican to ever be elected? Guess Reagan and the Bush family missed that memo.
"It turns out that the exterior portions of the lunar module are made up of mylar and cellophane put together with scotch tape and staples. We had to have pads on the floor because if you dropped a screw-driver it would go right through the floor. Holy Christmas and we're going to try and fly this thing?" Apollo 9 astro Jim McDivitt.
I think we have to get there sometime....we dont have the money right now. Lately we have all started believing the media I think....none of us seems to understand that we are here because uncle Ben is spending some 90 billion a month printed fresh mint bills on our economy. None of this is real money. When it comes to real money we are in the hole for THREE HUNDRED BILLION A MONTH! Understand all that?
Democratic give away programs will kill this nation. When that happens there will be riots and race wars. Those that were receiving the aid will go on the hunt and try to take what they want. Those that have better be prepared to defend and protect themselves. We are all being lied to and operated by our government leaders and mega rich class. We are but ants to support them and their class of people. They could care less about the future of mankind and the need to advance programs like NASA. Think of it, without NASA you would not be reading this message now because computers would not be around.
There would be no computers without NASA? How do you figure that then?
10,000 years from now, earthlings and robots will have populated atleast one other galaxy. There may even be planets with only robot inhabitants. We cannot even imagine the kinds of technology that will be available then. Just thinking about this is making my head explode in pleasure, awe and sadness.
10,000 yers form now man will no longer be around because we killed off each other.

Thanks 🙂 If it is indeed Buzz, I am floored. No greater honor. I've subscribed to the facebook page.
Being an elementary school teacher I try to teach my students to not believe just anything the government or popular media puts forward as fact. Hopefully children in the future will cease believing in fairy tales told to them by the government (such as the fake Apollo missions). Please learn to use critical and scientific thought. Do not believe something just because you saw it on television.
Now I know we are all doomed.
Wow, you should probably be banned from teaching.
I assume that you then take the very serious responsibility - which I imagine any reputable teacher would take - to explain to them some of the science behind why the Apollo missions actually DID happen??
Phony Apollo Moon Landings = The Wizard of OZ and the Emperor's New Clothes for pretentious scientific/rationalist types
crappy,
The whole shebang is faux. This is due to the fact that reentry causes rapid vaporization at hypersonic which was discovered in '49. The Soviets and NASA were both made up of 'x' Nazi scientists, who very well knew this fact yet planned the alleged 'space race'. Yuri Gagarin 'bailing' from hypersonic and parachuting to safety is the first fake that started the whole 'show'. And now we have colorful 'exploding stars' via the Hubble....
http://www.fountainsofthegreatdeep.com/IFS.htm
they achieved low earth orbit (a few hundred miles up) to take the phony Apollo capsule and window shots with no gravity.
Ok we all know you lot are nutters when it comes to the moon landings but what is your reasoning as to why Hubble is not real?
Hubble might be real, but the Apollo missions are fake. Just click my name for an informative blog.
There are pictures of the lunar module's that the Apollo astronauts used to explore the moon that were photographed by the high resolution lunar orbiting satellite that mapped the lunar surface during the last few years. Anyone who believes that these missions never happened are ignorant.
They look like dots from the photos. They are the stuff sent up on UNMANNED missions. There is plenty of it up there. Some of the probes had wheels too = alleged lunar dune buggy tracks!
Are you seriously asserting that the Apollo missions were faked? Because if you are then you are in need of professional help.
D0 you really believe we had better manned spaceflight technology (or any technology for that matter) in 1969 than currently? That's illogical you old coot! Only the NASA employees, senior citizens and members of the lamestream Media still believe we went to other worlds in 1969!
You know the moon isn't 'another world' right?
And there is not enough interest in actually going back to the moon to justify the cost?
Gee Jan, you look amazingly like Crappygovernment/Buck Rogers/whoever you want to pretend to be this week. I'm amazed you have room for so many alter egos with all that mush inside your skull.
If I a child in your class I would remove that child IMMEDIATELY.
Perhaps you should switch to pre-school where you can do less damage; or stick to show and tell or nap time. You may be too unstable to teach at all.
Especially in a tin-can literally "held together with staples and scotch tape"......
You know that was artistic license description right? And was about the lunar landing module part?
You do know that a reflector was installed and they bounce a laser off it to verify the exact distance between the Earth and the Moon, right? Proof, of course, can be ignored by those like yourself who choose to fabricate their own reality. We went to the Moon, there is no valid conspiracy, there would have been way too many people who would have blown the whistle by now if any of your BS were true. I so hope you are a troll and really not a teacher of impressionable children.
Russia has reflectors too. They sent them up in UNMANNED missions called Lunokhod!
LUNOKHOD WAS MANNED BY KGB SUICIDE DWARF!!FACT!!!!
YOU call yourself a teacher? Perhaps you are a member of the Flat Earth Society too.
Well let's see, "Fake Apollo Missions?" and you are an elementary school teacher? Remind me to keep my grandkids out of your classes. The logistics of creating a fake moon landing are almost more expensive than doing it for real...and how did they get that flag up there anyway? The point here should be that yes there have been conspiracies, like the conspiracy to cover up all the reported UFO encounters over the years but I am afraid you are barking up the wrong conspiracy tree on this one, for you see, they did go to the moon and their junk they left behind is still there for anyone to see. Another real consiracy? The fact that when Armstrong and Aldrin got there, there was already someone there watching them from the edge of the crater. If you want to talk conspiracy let's stick with the real ones such as how the USA used Nazi scientists after WW2 in Project Paperclip to create our space program but kept it hidden for many years.
You call yourself a teacher? Let's put you back in a horse and buggy where you belong. I suspect you are a card carrying member of the Flat Earth Society.
Horses wouldn't go near this twit.
Parents need to get their children the frack out of your class, because you obviously aren't qualified to teach anyone anything.
By any chance, is your school in Iran?
So, how's that teaching gig in Alabama going? Ah, I see.....
Jan it is also sad there is not a moderator to this blog to remove the barbarians rants. At least Facebook has a report spam button.
I bet you are an environmental enginee. A janitor
I watched as a child the moon walks. What an achievement of the human spirit. Mars....I da no....May be colonies on the moon to start. We can get back to earth if a problem arises. Mars....Too far away still. Go back to the moon and make the landing sites the places to vacation. The rich go first and the servants follow directly behind them to clean up after them.
To everyone who thinks we never went to the moon, I have a question.
Where did the 850 pounds of moon rocks and lunar soil samples come from?
Those rock and soil samples have been studied in laboratories and universities all over the world in many different countries by some of the most eminent geologists and scientists. All universally agree that the rocks were created by processes that took billions of years to complete and had to have occurred in an environment that doesn't exist here on earth. The Apollo rocks and soil samples are universally acknowledge to be of non-terrestrial, lunar origin. So the rocks most surely are not fakes.
That being said, I'm sure that the conspiracy theorists will answer that an unmanned probe retrieved them. However there is a problem with that theory. The Russians did send an unmanned probe to the moon, which did retrieve and return a lunar sample. It scooped up and returned about an ounce of loose soil, but that was all. This is because unmanned probes don't have the manual dexterity to pick up and carry back large objects like whole moon rocks. Further, an unmanned sample mission is limited to how much material it can carry back, so to get 850 pounds of moon rocks down here would require many repeat missions that had to have all been done in total secrecy.
The 850 pounds of real, authentic moon rocks are down here because the 12 Apollo astronauts picked them up with their hands and loaded them into their spacecraft and brought them down here. That's why we have them. Face it.
.
Just because you claim they are moon rocks doesn't mean they are moon rocks. "BUT NASA SCIENTISTS SAY..." Oh yes, lets believe the so called scientists that are protecting themselves. They would NEVER lie in order to save face. Not at all. No government official has ever lied about anything ever.
They've been studied at Universities by labs which are not associated with NASA, but I guess your conveniently ignored that fact.
Re-read my post. The rocks have been studied all over the world, not just here in the US by people associated with NASA. Unless you think that all these foreigners, including ones in Russia and China, are part of the big, grand conspiracy you have to acknowledge the the moon rocks are genuine.
@ Republicans for HONOR – Government officials very often lie. But not all the time. And they're not lying this time.
Also, this is why government officials should refrain from lying. Because when they lie sometimes it wrecks their credibility, so even when they are not lying, people think they are.
And the sun revolves around the earth too!
They are lunar meteorite pieces from Antarctica. NASA's Werner Von Braun led an expedition there to collect them and pass them off as Apollo Moon Rocks when the time came. Click my name for more info on the frauds!
Yes, because geologists around the world would be fooled that easily. Sir, you need to rent a brain for the weekend and see how it feels.
I see. That explains the complete lack of heat damage and scorching on them.
We can't go to the Moon, God made this earth for humanity. If we go to the moon it will be like when we left EDEN the first time... God will shut us out from the Earth because we reached too far.
You can either pray to the LORD or reach for the stars. At least prayer will get you eternal bliss. Reaching will only bring Satan closer to your soul.
Please take your fanatical nonsense to an appropriate page and stay of those that pertain to facts. Thankyou.
Dont see me going to your god is good pages and complaining about science
Absolutely! If God had meant for us to think, He'd have given us brains!
maybe someday another country or private organization can get a hold of our 1960s technology and return to the moon.
It's not the 1960's tech they need, it's the grand vision and big balls they need to rediscover.
I've got 4 sets (brand new in the box) of the awesome Taschen book, including a signed and framed photo of Buzz Aldrin on the moon. Out of print, not longer available from the publisher, check it out on eBay at: http://www.ebay.com/itm/140968067069?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Buzz is ok but do you have the Woody doll? I love all the Toy Story stuff. Much more believable than the NASA fakery.
Remember that chick with 3 bubes in Total Recall? THAT's why we gotta explore Mars.
Buzz is THE man!! I agree 100%...
He does seem like a deacent actor.
As much as I respect and admire Dr. Aldren I have to comment on a HUGE error he made. On a recent guest spot on a Dallas radio station he spoke about his pride in being one of 24 men to have walked on the moon.
Uhhhhhh, Buzz? Only 12 men have taken that stroll (2 each from Apollo 11,12,14,15,16,and 17). Made you look really, really stupid to those of us in the know. At least the host (KSKY's Mark Davis) made it a point to not embarrass you, though I knew he (Davis) knew better!
24 men have seen the far side of the moon, he may have been thinking of that. He's 83, cut him some slack.
In my opinion he is a deacent actor. His space man series was ok but slightly hard to believe. The special effects weren't that great. Any low budget film made today is far more believable and realistic that the fake lunar project.
Spell right, you flipping idiot.
Spelling is the least of this guys problems.
I think it would take quite a bit more than a misspoken number to make Buzz Aldrin look stupid. I'm sure Buzz knows that correct number as well. Everything seems a bit different when you're under the pressure of the camera lens and it was just a temporary slip.
Well, 24 FEET have walked on the moon.
24 people went to the moon, he got it right. .
Fact, we spent more money on the bailout of wall street, in 1 year at $750 billion than we've spent on all the 70 years of NASA combined. NASA's $15 billion annual budget is exactly .4% of our annual budget. Think about that not even half of a percent of the nations annual budget goes to NASA?
It's ridiculous that anyone complains about the cost of NASA, it's a joke. It has no real impact on our federal spending.
nasas budget was more than 15 billion.
I believe this dude he seems legit
Over a ten-year period.
Landing on Mars withini 20 years would be nice, but paying off the national debt and saving the USA from defalt and implosion would be nicer.
We will never pay off the national debt, it isn't going to happen, no more than Europe ever paid us back for WW2, finally almost 70% of the debt is owned by Americans, basically, we'd just be paying money back to ourselves.
Finally, how much do you think NASA cost???
I hate these debates because people who say cut NPR, NASA, PBS have absolutely no concept of budget numbers or what actually are the cost in our budget. It sounds good to someone who is clueless ... if you cut NASA's budget, which is $15 billion to 0, I mean not a dime of money for NASA, nothing, you wouldn't have even cut half a percent of our annual budget. 15 billion sounds like a lot until you realize our annual budget is hundreds of times larger at 3.5 trillion.
It is all relative
Astronautics is a fake science similar to Scientology and astrology.
It never ceases to amaze me how many ignorant people walk the earth.
Just because you say so.
Hold your breath until you lose consciousness. Repeat until you are dead
Not a religious person, but I pray everyday that Caucasians never make it to occupy any other planet in the universe. They need to stay right here on Earth and dwell in all the mega problems and environmental issues that they created.
Hate to correct you, but I do believe Asian persons are the leading cause of damage to the environment at present.
Not a religious comment, but a racist one. The concept of Race is a myth as there is no genetic basis for it at all. Educate yourself for a change. Start with the fact that "Race" was invented by "Caucasians" to begin with. Fact-bombed and Hitch-slapped!!! FWACK!!!
dude, humans created these problems, Caucasian has no real scientific meaning. Humans are the only race we actually are.
That's an excellent point, Franly. Buzz is a visionary, and to be a visionary requires seeing beyond the mundane issues that politicians squalk and fight about.
Lauradet is probably Kim Jong Un's pen name. I think we need to create a rocket that will find hot air in North Korea and blow up its source.
You really need to learn about all of the marvelous inventions created from the space program that have benefited mankind..............created at a fraction of the cost that the U.S. pharmaceutical industry has charged to produce fortune reaping drugs that mostly mask symptoms instead of curing the cause. This is in addition to the trillions of dollars religious inst.itutions have taken in to...........further their belief systems at no tangebile benefit to the environment or health of the subscriber.
You pray about that everyday? Man, you are really specific!
If NASA is so great, how come all the pictures of the moon are in black and white?
Because the moon is white and space is black. What do you want them to do, use Photoshop to add more color?
Why do we get better pictures from way further away Mars(352,000,000 miles) than the Moon (239,000 miles)?
The imaging technology is better today than in 1969. And if you look on the NASA website there are high resolution scans on there that look pretty good even from way back then.
I gonna say slowly. Those pictures..... from Mars.... are taken.... from oooooooorbit. And Rooooooovers.
LOL, I hope you are being facetious. If you are not I'll let you think about that.
They're not all in black and white. Look on the NASA website under space history and Apollo. Pictures showing the lunar module and the US flag contain plenty of color.
Depending on the angle of sunlight, your eyes do process color where the lunar surface casts a slight brown tinge.
We need to cut all funding for the space program completely and give the money to the NRA to save the last of our freedoms from the dictator in Washington! We need gun education to be mandatory in our school systems. We need all households to be armed and ready when our own government troops come to raid us. We must stand up to tyranny! Only the NRA understands how important Liberty and Love are to America!
Thanks for rallying more support for Obama. Your rabid hatred (you are not a racist, of course) earns him more sympathy every day. So thank you from my heart. From a Democrat and supporter of President Obama.
Oh my... LOL.
Send me to Mars, let me off of this planet.
You can stay, he's the one that needs to go.
Idiots like you are the exact reason that background checks are needed for buy firearms. The NRA is nothing more than a fear-mongering mouthpiece for the firearms industry. Jeebus, and you Tea-Tards are the first to rail against special interest groups...
Sarcasm is truly lost upon the internet.
Sorry, but your post sounds too much like a left-winger making a bad imitation of a right-winger.
When I was a kid my dad called me in from the back yard to watch the moon landing. Some years later I remember Aldrin doing an interview when the Apollo program was winding down on how men should be walking on Mars by 1990. I remember thinking I'd be old enough to be an astronaut and I could be the first on Mars. Now though, I don't think we'll ever get there in my life time.
But you're an astronaut right? I mean, you were so inspired by Buzz et al that you took every engineering class possible, joined the military as a test fighter pilot, and married well politically, right?
Norm, while the Shuttle program cooled my desire to be an astronaut, the incredible achievements we'd made in space as a country, Shuttle included, did draw me to math and engineering. Buzz Aldrin in particular is admired by engineers because he pioneered working in space, and every advance, every tool, every refinement to EVA suits in terms of handling and dexterity that we use today, were all pioneered by him.
JP: So in other words, no. NASA is therefore nothing more to you than it is to 99.99999% of the population. A multi-billion dollar "GEE WHIZ!!" factory. To the remaining slice of the population its just another government/contractor gravy train. Don't we have enough of those?
Norm, you're clearly quite literal in your understanding of how inspiration works. Why be a priest it you have no chance of being Pope? Why get into politics if you may never be president? Why live if you can't live forever?
Had Obama not been elected we would have been on our way in a couple years.
You just keep telling yourself that, little man.
Having worked on Constellation I do not have to tell myself anything, dimwit.
Yeah, and just because I work in the film industry doesn't make me Steven Spielberg, you janitor. Being upset because you can't sweep up behind the engineers any longer makes you no more qualified than the average idiot to comment about the space program. What an angry little troll you are.
The Augustine panel, seemed to think it was a no go, and maybe you need to blame yaour work on the program as to why it was deemed...'over budget, behind schedule, and lacking in innovation'
Had dimwits like McCain/Palin and Romney/Ryan been elected funding to NASA might have been cut off entirely, not to mention the NSF and the EPA.
Yeah, you just keep blaming President Obama for all your problems. Now go have yourself another beer and drown your sorrows, pinhead.
Okay Quid. Why argue with a democrat...they know everything. You were obviously in Florida when Obama vowed to keep the program going. Don't drink here and unlike unfortunate millions I have a very good job. You keep us informed.
What makes you think I'm a Democrat? Oh right, I disagree with you. Typical NeoCon Tea-Tard. Enough with your ignorance and trolling tactics. If you've nothing useful, constructive, or germane to add then don't bother posting. And quit projecting your inadequacies onto everyone else.
Check your facts ... Bush crippled the space agency by ordering the shutdown of the Shuttle system without having a replacement manned space vehicle ready to go
Wow. You are a real piece of work.
While I respect Buzz and am glad he was able to fix the 'blast-off' button of the three-foil-thick LEM with a felt-tipped pen back in '69, I wholly disagree with faking a Mars landing. It makes much more sense to re-fake the moon before the Chinese fake it. We already have the lunar models, two unused LEM's hanging around in museums, and we can even shoot the landings near Groom Lake just like NASA did back in the day. In order to heighten drama, NASA could coordinate the fake WITH the Chinese (but not tell anybody) just like they did with the Soviets and make it look like another 'race'. They may have to work on their 'special plastic' heat shields, but it won't make too much difference for the cargo plane drops simulating reentry. Indeed, re-fake the moon, the current CG Mars fakes are doing just fine....
http://www.fountainsofthegreatdeep.com/IFS.htm
You probably believe that The Holocaust was faked as well, part of the evil Zionist-Illuminati-One-World-Government Conspiracy. You might want to upgrade your tinfoil hat- looks like it's degrading from all that HAARP radiation leaking through. X-D X-D X-D X-D X-D X-D
I'll tell you what foil is not thick enough- the stuff on your head.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_burn_centers_in_the_United_States
On their NASA propaganda fest which insisted that the Apollo Missions were legit, the Mythbusters conceded that 20% or Americans don't believe in the veracity of the Apollo Moon Landings. That equates to more than 60,000,000 Americans and counting , hardly a fringe movement! The Mythbusters had no answers for that Apollo 11 faked footage on my blog, just click my name!
Just goes to show you how many delusional ignorant paranoids are out there. There are a billion Christians and a few billion Muslims out there, so that alone proves that there are a lot of idiots out there who believe in something that isn't true. Your argument has been nullified. Now, go take your meds.
All I can think about is the line from total recall, "Get your A$$ to mars !"
It saddens me that some still believe in the fallacy if the Apollo projects. Any rational person with a scientific mind knows that man never went to the moon. Children need to educate themselves before posting foolish comments stating we went to the moon.
It saddens me that Darwinism lets you live.
The computer that you are writing your blasphemy on is a direct result of the lunar program, how ironic.
Isn't it great that we live in a country where everyone, even the least intelligent of us like Arcturus, are allowed to speak their feeble, delusional mind?
Sure. And it worked so well with Apollo 11 they decided to fake it 5 more times. 5 1/2 if you count Apollo 13.
Luvlar ... I dare you to go up to Fred Haise or Jim Lowell and suggest what they went though was faked. Bring a baggie with you to collect up the teeth they will knock out of you
People are having a hard time detecting sarcasm today.
Thanks Bill. Obvious to only the two of us I guess.
And you're proof that Man will never be as intelligent as Ape. Dr. Zaius should order you sterilized. ;-P
Dr Zaius! Dr Zaius! Oh oh oh Dr Zaius!
The 'return' trips were to steal more money from unknowing American taxpayers. Apollo 13 was the simulation of a crisis en route to the Moon carried out in low Earth orbit a few hundred miles up. Pretty good for those days but nowhere near a trip to the 239,000 mile away Moon and back , not even close!
Seriously, what mental illness have you been diagnosed with and what medication are you not taking that you should be taking?
Faking the Apollo Moon Landings was child's play for the people who had just killed JFK and staged a coup in America.
Thousands of people in Australia witnessed the engine burns that that propelled the 9 Apollo spacecraft out toward the moon. They didn't stay in earth orbit. I guess you probably think that all those Australians are part of the moon landing hoax conspiracy too.
They went a few hundred miles up that's it. That's what the australians saw. Where are the pics?
Oh you mean like the ones on this page? http://astronomy.ua.edu/keel/space/apollo.html
Thats one of many, thousands of telescopes worldwide watched in awe as mankind made a great achievement. Including nations who hate our guts and would love to embarass the USA. Guess theyre all in on it huh.
Nice of you to take time out from your Klan meeting today toppost that for us, where there no meetings today to discuss how the holocaust was faked too ?
I'm an engineer and have made a hobby out of studying the Apollo Project for over 40 years. I've studied it down to the wiring diagrams that they used to create the wiring in the rocket and spacecraft. In all that time I've never seen anything that leads me to believe that the landings were faked. However, there exists a huge amount of evidence that it really happened. There are no holes in the design or contradictions in all the data I've gone through. And scientifically there was nothing impossible about doing it.
Don't waste money on science fiction. We need to keep the money at home where it can be used for defense helping our struggling corporations. The devil put Mars in the sky to drive us to self destruction. Obey the word of the LORD and try not to become gods ourselves.
First you condemn the concept of chasing fiction, and then you say the devil put Mars in the sky. You're giving me mixed signals there, pal.
LOL...keep the money at home. Right. By the way, we are sending Egypt 200 Abram tanks valued at 3 to 6 million EACH. We just can't give our money away fast enough...to any and everyone. At least the NASA Mars mission would bring some good jobs.
I agree. It is sad that some simpletons still believe we went to the moon
You can always tell the deluded paranoid; they describe themselves exactly when referring to other people. A "simpleton." Perfect self-description, Clinty.
Better not say that to Aldrin, or he'll punch you like he punched that other guy that tried to make him swear on a bible that the moon landings weren't faked.
Well, color me the Mayor of Simpleton then. Never been near a university, never took a paper or a learning degree...
youtube-com/watch?v=5Da9sc6YDBo
Being an expert on lunar studies with a Phd in Astrophysics I can assure you man never went io the moon in the 1960's. – or ever. No matter how many times the flat earthers say we did, it does not change the fact that man has never been to the moon.
I'm an expert in detecting trolls. I can assure you that you are one of them! I worked on the Apollo program considerably. I can assure you, we went to the moon.
I also worked in the Apollo project and helped creat the illusion we went to the moon. I was on the film crew.
That's nothing. I was there when they dropped the atomic bomb. All a scam. Some big klieg lights and a craapload of M80's. Total hoax. I know, I lit all those fuses.
More like a PhD in bulls**t.
I saw bigfootl
I am Bigfoot.
Great job!
Keep fighting the good fight Buzz.
Somehow, over the last 40 years, the US has gotten old and tired. We, the US, are never even going to try to get to Mars or even try to get back to the moon. It's all up to China now, or to private initiative; Uncle Sam has become a bloated, fat, old man, barely able to creep along with his walker, let along aspire to go back to "the final frontier."
I agree. Plus we never went to the moon anyways.
A blind man declares to the world around him, "there is no sun in the sky!" The sighted people around him know for a fact that there is a sun in the sky. They know this because they can see, unlike the blind man.
An foolish man declares to the world around him, "we never went to the Moon!" The wiser people around him know for a fact that we went to the Moon. They know this because they are educated, unlike the foolish man.
Dan, you're a dope!
Then prey tell why one can see the Lunar Module Decent Stage in the Sea of Tranquility and the other four landing spots? How is it that we still can reflect LASER light off of the experiment that Aldrin and Armstrong left? How is it that one cannot simulate the "hop" in Earth's gravity well? Anyone that does not believe that we reached and returned from the lunar surface are Ultra Maroons ...
Sorry, Buzz, but the excitement was entirely about going to the Moon. It was also about showing up the Russians during the height of the Cold War after they got a head start on us.
It's also because no sighted human on Earth has ever been able to ignore that Moon sitting up there in the sky, but darn few have ever really seen Mars with their own eyes. 99% of the human race has only seen Mars in pictures. That makes a big difference in how you can relate to the idea of going there.
Bottom line ... going to Mars would be horrendously expensive, and without the nationalistic impetus of beating someone like the Russians, it's just not going to happen.
Oh, geez, here come the "we never went to the moon" loonies . . . .
"The problem is that CONgress will always screw things up".
Yep. As they say, CONgress is the opposite of PROgress.
Careful with that joke; its an antique.
Right on, Buzz! Let's go to Mars!
Most studies now indicate Mars is in fact a gay planet. Really gay.
What a waste of money. Our schools are in the bottom ranking of industrialized world, or infrastructure is crumbling, Lord knows we must be the police to the world so... going to Mars is a gigantic waste of money, time and effort. Manned space flight is costly and provides no returns for the investment.
Schools are primarily the responsibility of the states, with local government next in line.
Space Exploration advances science and technology, while also improving living standards, and providing inspiration and encouragement.
NASA's entire budget is less than 1% of teh total US budget.
Nations can lead, follow or stagnate. I prefer that we retain our leadership position.
Leadership position in what? Spending billions, if not trillions, of dollars to find out Mars is just as desolate and worthless as the moon. Keep your dreams where they belong: in your head and out of my wallet.
Money spent on space exploration does not get wasted. It is spent here in the United States and drives businesses and creates jobs, boosting the economy. Not to mention the technology spin-offs from space research
More taxpayer bailouts for Aerospace Engineers and War profiteers just like the needless wars! America needs more small private sector businesses instead of NASA space welfare garbage!
Bullocks. Its nothing more than your classic bureaucracy/contractor co-dependence. Nether can live without the other while truly essential services whither.
For the most part schools have plenty of money. The problem is how its being spent. We keep passing bills to increase funding yet only a small % of those funds makes it into the classroom. Almost all of these increases have gone to administration.
About the money, it does NOT go to Mars. It is spent on Earth. I don't believe the technical spin off arguments. but I don't believe the economic trickle up. If the government spends money to hire 100,000 engineers then 100,000 more kids will go to engineering school and the US again might have a chance to be better at engineering.
Space exploration encourages kids to be astronauts, not engineers. A small sliver might go into engineering that wouldn't have otherwise, but hardly worth the trillions we will spend.
You don't have to "believe" the technical spin-offs. They are fact. Your belief has nothing to do with it.
What would it take to "fix" schools? Some might argue that a permanent mission to Mars would be the very best thing you could do to fix the schools.
Seriously, what is the #1 predictor of a child's success in school? Hint: it is NOT the amount of money you spend on the school. It is the parent's education and income level. Schools are a reflection of the society and kids grow up to be like their parents, more or less. If you want better schools then you need to bring back the middle class. A Mars mission would dump tons of money on middle class engineers and create a LOT more of them.
What a waste of an opinion.
Hey Buzz, how about getting to the moon first!
You realize that we have already been to the moon...
That clown is just trolling for attention.
Buzz, we DO need to get to Mars. The problem is that CONgress will always screw things up. As such, we need to push for private space to handle launches, fuel depots, tugs, etc. IOW, the only way to continue moving BEO, is if we can kill off the SLS and get that money moved into private space. Once we allow them to do the services, then we can get NASA to not only put together missions, but also to have NASA return to doing the cutting edge science.
I'm an ALIEN 🙂
Neil Armstrong = Lance Armstrong. Feel free to click on my name for an informative blog on Apollo with some great footage of Buzz Aldrin not being able to answer some questions about his voyage.
I clicked on your name and read your blog, and one thing that stands out is that radiation effects robotic spacecrafts also, so if the van allen radiation belts are as lethal as it is stated in your blog even the spacecraft electronics would be fried. Also why didn't Russians blew the whistle on that, since they were monitoring NASA communications and their flight.
That was ridiculous. you are one of those morons eh? We went to the moon as to prove to the USSR that we were better than them. We dont have the funds to do so now because no other country except China has space capability to get to the moon, and they are not trying.
And it all makes sense now....here you go, it'll help give you some "perspective"
http://gizmodo.com/5977205/why-the-moon-landings-could-have-never-ever-been-faked-the-definitive-proof
I have footage of the Apollo 11 crew clearly faking part of their mission on footage time and date stamped by NASA themselves. Neil, Buzz and Michael Collins ran away when confronted with it and had no answers for what they were doing. Click my name for my blog. Neil would have wanted it this way!
That's cool. We have 140+ minutes of continuous footage of US astronauts being on the moon. We also have lunar rocks that were brought back and studied by scientists all over the world with extensive amount of papers published with their findings.
just like the Warren Commission!
I realize that you have very little to entertain you in your life and a burning desire to feel important, but what you claim as proof has been debunked over, and over, and over again and I hope for your parents' sakes that you're not stupid enough to actually believe the hokum you're peddling.
Who 'debunked' it, a NASA or Media employee?
Anyone and everyone with a laser and a telescope, I would imagine.
Russia has laser reflectors without manned missions. You can't see the alleged Apollo stuff with a home telescope or any telescope for that matter. NASA = the Wizard of Oz for pretentious types! I know it hurts!
No, you cannot see the Apollo equipment with a home telescope. You can't see it with the Hubble either. Ff you pointed the Hubble at the moon, it would have a 150-meter resolution. At that resolution, a football stadium occupies just one or two pixels of the image. That means that there would be no way to discern the Lunar Excursion Module or any of the other equipment left on the moon. It is too small to pick up, even with the world's best telescope. You cannot see gravity or atoms with your naked eye, doesn't mean they don't exist.
I'll bet you don't have a spouse or significant other. If by some chance you do, they have my pity.
You also forgot to mention that the World is flat, the moon is made of cheese, Elvis is alive and the sun goes out at night !
Not this old rhetoric again. Those conspiracy theories, radiation fears, odd photos etc. have long been dispelled by credible scientists. The only ones still going on about this crud have no credibility...just armchair bloggers.
Who put the reflector on the moon thats been in use for decades? Are the recent photos of lunar landing crafts on the moon all fake too?
Russia has Moon reflectors too, but they never claimed to have sent men to the Moon. they sent them up there in UNMANNED missions(just like NASA did!)
Not so! Lunokhod was controlled by a dwarf b/c the radio control didn't work!
As and avid astronomy buff since I was nine years old, back in 1956, I have loved the study of the universe and our solar system! Now almost 66, I would love to see in my lifetime, men go to Mars! In 1969, when we landed on the moon first of any country and still have that distinction of being the only country to have put men on the moon, I feel for sure that we will go to Mars in the next 20 years. In 1969, the United States was at the pinnacle of learning achievement and we have not duplicated this advancement since that year! As Buzz Aldrin advocates...Let's Go to Mars!!!
I'm right with you and Buzz on this. When I was young I hoped I'd go to Mars. Now, the best I can hope for is my children going, and dammit, we need to make this push or stagnate here in an overcontrolled police state utterly devoid of privacy, free speech, and creative thinking.
Nice goal – but the GOP will kill anything involved in strategic thinking. They want their own dark ages covered in oil.
And Obama jumped the shark when the stimulus focused on the here and now and had no strategic vision to it.
Be nice to have leaders with vision again.
What leaders are you referencing?
Can't afford space vacations for elite astronauts AND multiple wars plus a few thousand bases worldwide plus 20000/month non combat government air flights for military elites and government employees plus military equipment gifts to foreign countries. Can't afford all that. What do we cut?
Can't afford to hand over bags of money to Hamid Karzai to prop up his lifestyle. Can't afford it. Can't afford the status quo and a trip to Mars.
A good start would be: 90% of the non-combat "elite" flights, 100% of Planned Parenthood and 100% of battery-powered R & D.
NASA = welfare/bailouts for engineers and defense contractors
Let me guess - Liberal Arts major who works at McDonalds?
We need real, private sector jobs for Americans making products people will pay for voluntarily instead of forced space welfare!
Lol...yah, this guy is a fool....dont bother with him.
It isn't like NASA led to billions of dollars worth of industry in the private sector...oh wait, it has.
http://spinoff.nasa.gov/Spinoff2008/pdf/timeline_08.pdf
That stuff could have been created without NASA just the same. Go get a real, private sector job if you are as smart as you think you are!
Crappy my boy, I somehow suspect that JinxGT has a private sector job, as do I. I'm sure you do as well; after all, 98% of food service concerns are privately owned.
Hey, did you know that there is 4 people expected to land on mars on 2023?
google the mars-one website and learn more... they are letting you/me/everyone put in applications for the trip (one way... unlike Buzz who got to come back home to earth). Just saying... there are a few trips expected to go to mars...the question is when will the first human mission be and who will be leading that charge? I argue the space program of the future may prove to be world driven vs. one country like USA in the past.... more money, more resources and maybe even more passion or vision from the entire world when everyone gets to chip in to help make this dream (for humanity) come true (ok and also for Buzz.... my only disappointment is that Buzz may not live to see it happen, rather he has faith we will do it soon).
Send Ted Cruz, one way.
Mars One is still highly speculative at this point. It is largely contingent on emerging technologies and even more so, reliant on investors. No money...no Mars One. So to say we're expected to have 4 people on Mars in 2023...well let's just say, I won't hold my breath.
Actually one of the beauties of Mars One is that it does NOT rely on emerging tech at all, but rather on current, proven technology.
http://mars-one.com/en/mission/technology
Yes, it's highly speculative but rather than take the cynical view (so common online) that it will never happen, I prefer to be inspired by the plan and say let;s go for it. NASA getting to Mars? No that's something I won't be holding my breath waiting for.
I know it is highly speculative, but so is the L5 Society. It's a dream to strive for, and maybe it will rally other private ventures into thinking and planning on that scale.
It most definitely relies on emerging technology. Last I checked, we don't have a rocket capable of transporting humans to Mars and we don't have the robotics technology for a semi-autonomous rover to put assembly the living quarters. Therefore, this program relies on emerging technologies.
Judas, I agree. Putting a man on Mars and colonies in space are all things we should strive for but Mars One which is some loony version of the Truman Show is not healthy for the field of space exploration. I do not want space exploration in the hands of a man wanting to turn it into a reality tv show.
You know JinxGT, I'm going to concede that point. I had not looked at it closely enough to see just how unrealistic their goals really are. I thought it was a revamp of Mars Direct. Oh well.
The Mar One program has plans and nice looking artists drawing but they have almost NO MONEY. They say they need $6B but really need about $18B and have about $100K so far. So far all they have is a web site.
That said, if they could find a sponsor they might make it work. But their plan to pay for this with a TV reality show is just not going to work. They are short about $18B
I was 6 years old when he walked on the moon. Watching that and the other Apollo missions inspired me and my generation that we could accomplish anything. I studied in school, got good grades and aimed for a bright future – all because of the US space program. The value of going back to the Moon or Mars cannot be measured based on a single mission. It must be measured on what it does to a person, a nation and our future. There is no price tag too big for that.
Your last sentence ("There is no price tag too big for that") sums up why our country is in the shape it's in economically and culturally.
You call yourself Realist, but you appear to be REAL lazy and REALLY not very smart. For every one dollar invested in the Apollo program the United States made one hundred dollars in new technology and innovation. LOOK it up and quit spouting the FOX NEWs BS. You anit-government types think the government should only spend on the military and NOTHING else. This country doesn't have a spending problem it has a revenue problem, caused by the very conservatives you worship. They keep cutting taxes and raise spending and then blame the moderates and liberals. Pfff look for facts fool, not opinions.
That was a great explanation. The space program inspires people to be, want, and reach for more. This leads to huge advances in science and helps cut down on the educational apathy that is truly killing the US. Hopefully, as Buzz mentioned, a trip to Mars would even become an international effort and be a real binding project for all mankind. From a strictly business point of view the commercial value of such an investment would be worth the price tag. Even with only the moon landing as a model, we know this would captivate the entire world's attention and lead to guaranteed ROI. No matter what lens you look at this opportunity though, whether it be for mutual actualization, capital gains, or exploration for the preservation of our species, great things are in sight.
Nonsense. Space exploration didn't expire us. Fear of Soviet domination of space did.
the space program brought an amazing amount of scientific and medical advancements tot he world. Then NASA became politicized and half the good it could have done was lost for a few decades.
As a nation if we can get behind the idea again i'm all for it but if its going to be an issue argues along party lines we will do alot more good sticking with the unmanned missions.
I already signed my ex-wife up for the Mars One project....
best comment win?
No.
Let's go!
Shouldn't we go to the moon first?
No! Why would we.......it is like going to the antarctica just because it is closer, when we could go to a tropical island. So many reasons make mars a mich better place to colonize.
If ppl will leave NASA alone and allow them to do the right things, then we will be on the moon BEFORE mars. The problem is, that CONgress is forcing them to spend 22 billion+ on SLS. Instead, that money should go to private space for MULTIPLE launch vehicles, tugs, fuel depots, and buying units from Bigelow Aerospace.
Note, that Bigelow Aerospace, as well as SpaceX, want to be on the moon around 2020. And they can do it.
But NOT if the republicans continue to keep NASA into a jobs bill.
What's with you people? We have already been to the moon...
Obvious troll is obvious. It's clearly trying to get the attention it didn't get in childhood.
I agree Buzz unfortunately the Supreme Court decided to elected the village idiot (W Bush) who then decided to spend 6 trillion dollars (total direct and indirect when all said and done) war mongering so unfortunately this will not be an option for at least another generation. Chicken hawks are the biggest danger to space exploration now that weapons are banned in outer space.
If we could weaponize Mars and it would give us an advantage over the Chinese the chicken hawks would have a military base on Mars in a decade.
What do you mean? The chinese have no space program to speak of, and wont for a very long time....research it....dont believe the press, they lie.
I know but sadly that may be the only thing that even has a chance of motivating the policy makers. I guess it may come down to taking advantage of government d_ck waving to get the dream done.
Flyonthewall, You could not be more wrong about the Chinese. They very much have a decent space program. More importantly, it is 100% military based, and not civilian.
Sorry...do your research, the chinese space program is comprised of 1960 putdated russian soyuz rockets, NOTHING state of the art there. china is decades behind the US.....sorry, china is nit a threat, and wont be for a very long time. Please research this stuff.
Fly, the Shenzhou is BASED on Soyuz; it is larger, and of a clearly different design at even a quick glance. Besides, what makes you think Soyuz stagnated? The Soyuz is still in use today in a much updated form. It's the VW Bug of space. The Chinese based the module configuration, reentry capsule shape, and many of the systems on Soyuz because Soyuz is a proven, hardy, versatile design. Not to forget, the launchers China is using are home grown. The Chinese program is slow and methodical, but it so far has a 100% success rate.
Great job making up, i.e., pulling from your rear, numbers that are so far off it's laughable. In any event, you're right, if there had been no war in Iraq, we'd already have 5 large cities on Mars. You dolts give liberals a bad name.
Actually, no. W/neo-cons spent well over 6 trillion during their 8 years there. That does not include the on-going medical nightmare that they leave us with.
I put together my own tribute blog to the 100% phony Apollo Moon landings. Feel free to click on my name for a look.
Are you saying we never went to the moon? If so your an utter fool....clearly we did. Why do you kooks appear every ti e there is a story on soace.....your Dismissed and scoffed at!!
We can only make it a few hundred miles into space currently. How are we supposed to believe that they were able to send the Apollo missions 239,000 miles to the Moon and back with 1969-1972 technology? That's illogical, old timer!
LOL.....thats your logic......whatever...get lost...your no longer worthy of my time as your clealry an idiot, and dont even get basic physics if you believe that.........politics are why we dont go to the moon......not capability. Run along !!
As you may recall, according to the genius Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), we've already been to Mars as evidenced by the flag that Armstrong planted there.
Of course we went to the moon. Were all the trips, just a pretense? In the era of modern communications, we cannot keep even "arms for hostages," deals a secret. And you think that the moon landings were fake, and that the fraud has gone this long without being exposed? Pretty hard to believe this kind of nonsense still persists. And who says we can only go a few hundred miles into space? I suppose that for some folks anyway, a denial of US moon missions or allegations about an alien coverup in Roswell, must fulfill some kind of deep seated need to attract attention or incite argument. No other way to really understand what is to nearly everyone, a series of persistent though absurd, denials. It is a shame to see the valuable right of free speech and all the good it is capable of producing, used for such wasteful folly.
The same people who killed JFK for Vietnam were behind the Phony Apollo Moon Landings, Mr. Simplor! It was Hollywood, Media and Military Industrial Complex!
#crappy: you are so delusional, I'm more curious about what kind of deluded life you live on a daily basis than I am about your ridiculously paranoid ravings. How do you function in society? You can't possibly have a real job, right? I see you as an anonymous clerk at Rite-Aid, or something close to that, right?
Lee Harvey Oswald was behind the faked moon landings? Wow, he seemed like such a patsy, but I guess he was pretty sharp anyway.
Boy are you dumb, dumb and dumb.
The Saturn 5 had a much larger fuel capacity and range than the shuttle does. The shuttle is DESIGNED to go into a lower orbit than the S5 Rocket, because it carries a much higher payload into orbit.
= blah blah blah I have no answers as to how or why NASA somehow had better technology during the 1960's than nowadays...Somebody tell that airhead Elon Musk character as well!
Leave it alone. Crappy here clearly doesn't understand the difference between a semi truck and a passenger sedan, much less the Saturn V and the Shuttle stack.
But on the other hand, look how happy you've made Crappy by replying! I bet he/she/it's wriggling like a little attention-starved puppy.
Are you willing to bet $500,000 that we never went to the moon? I'll put up that much on an even money bet. The problem is with these nuts is that no matter how much proof you show them they claim it is still faked.
What I'd like to hear from one of them is what evidence they would accept as proof. Likely we'd hear "nothing could make me change my mind." which is irrational.
To this day there is no 3rd party evidence(not from NASA or DoD) that men walked on the Moon. You sound like a religious nut with that kind of unfounded faith!
To be credible about this one must say "here is how the issue can be decided. We can apply either of these tests and the sresults will tell us". So you must specify what exct 3rd party evedence is missing. What would cause you to change your mind.
Don't say "It does not exist". You need to say what does not exist. The correct answer is "I would accept X, Y or Z, but none of those things exist."
You may have a point. Have yo read Ludwig Wittgenstein? He i a philosopher and asks this question: I place my hand in front of my face, how can I prove that what I see is may own hand it from of my face? Then he asks "how can I prove that I my self have never been to the moon? None of those can be proven with 100%. Perhaps he has been drugged? but we can have levels of certainty. The mood landing are at the highest level but nothing cn be 100% perhaps YOU were on the moon last week?
Crappydappydoo wouldn't accept any proof. That would involve admitting that he/she/it is wrong, and that would end all the attention he/she/it is m45turb4ting to right now.
Buzz, Mars is where I always thought we would go immediately after the Apollo Program.
Unfortunately that idiot Nixon killed everything and relegated flights to low-earth orbit only and that disasterous policy put us behind by 40 years.
.
I agree with Buzz. I would like the US to elect a leader that clearly states a goal to get to Mars, a time frame to achieve it and then commits the resources necessary to make it happen. I think the obvious technical challenges are propulsion, fuel, and the logistics. To elaborate, current chemical fuel rockets are outdated and slow. We need to find a way to better and more efficient way to harness the energy of the universe. I'd like to see the first milestone to be fully developing a commercial fusion reactor and then we can work on miniaturizing those reactors and converting the fusion reactions into thrust. The next major milestone would be to build a "colony" on the moon for staging, refueling, and act as a lunch pad for deep space travel. I think the energy expended just to escape the Earth's atmosphere is too great for efficient travel to Mars; as such, it would make sense to launch a vehicle and stage it on the Moon for flight to Mars. Finally, we need the last milestone to plan the logistics of making a round trip to Mars and execute. I would like to think this to be achievable before 2040 but we need commitment and resources from our leadership.
Geez, where od I start.....yes Delta V is considerably less on the moon, but so is gravity, and it doesnt have an atmosphere that can block harmful radiation, water is plentiful on mars, which means oxygen and rocket fuel can be manufactured fairly easy on mars, and temperatures are much more pleasant on mars.....all in all, earths moon makes a lousy place to inhabit. Mars is a way more habitable place to start with, and by far the better choice. Im not sure about fusion as a good choice........Ion impulse engines look a lot more promising, we need to work towards maturing that technology, they are currently 10-12 times more efficient than chemical rockets.........they are immensely fast, in the order of 200,000 mph right now......but take nearly a year to accelerate to that speed........if we could increase the rate of acceleration, we would be where we need to be..
I don't think we should inhabit the Moon. I just think it would be better to launch space operations from the Moon than from Earth. Also, this would be the second milestone after we come up with an alternate source of propulsion that isn't reliant on oxygen or an atmosphere for that matter; such as, a fusion propulsion rocket or using ion thrusters as you suggested. I'm more concerned with just getting to Mars, let alone trying to colonize it.
why? Chemical rockets are not reliant on an atmosphere, and oxygen and hydrogen are two of the most abundant elemants in the universe, often in the form of water.........oxygen is fairly easy to obtain from asteroids, and rocky planets. i agree the need for a more efficient propulsion,.....accelration rates are the key, as chemical rockets limit us to about 30,000 mph, which is entirely to slow for interstellar space travel......200,000 is a little better. Acceleration rates are what is holding us back at this time.
Ha! You criticize the Mars One project as relying on emerging technology (which it doesn't) and then your solution is " developing a commercial fusion reactor and then we can work on miniaturizing those reactors and converting the fusion reactions into thrust."
Yeah okay, good idea. Hey why don't we just hold off on going to Mars till transporter technology is created and we'll just beam up.
LMAO
Yah, the major difference is I'm a nobody with speculative ramblings on how I'd like to see us send a person to Mars by 2040. Mars One is an off the rocker project by an egotistical entrepreneur that actually has people believing that we will be in Mars in 10 years.
Btw, the ITER reactor in France should be operational by 2020-2027. Meanwhile, Mars One wants habitation pods and rovers on Mars in 5 to 8 years. It took 7 years to launch the Curiosity rover...I hope for the success of the Mars One program that they are well under way.
NASA spin offs are a fallacy. Sure we got TANG from NASA, but at what cost? If there is a need for some innovation, it will get done here on good old Earth at a fraction of the cost.
NASA is just like the Military Industrial Complex. Government $$ to large private contractors, who turn around and donate a few pennies to congress to keep the funding up. Plus NASA sucks money from general science funding. NASA doesn't make your life better through science, it sucks money from Earth based research that would benefit you.
Your kidding right? That is the most misinformed statement ever......Tang was not created for the space program or astronauts...that is a total misconception.....Tang had to beg NASA to take a little up on a flight so they could make those silly claims. However, nearly every modern convenience you use in your life today came from the space program.....please go reasearch this topic before you make totally false claims.
Ken, you're a moron. Go look at this NASA site. You can also see timelines and information for years prior if you're unsure what everyday technologies we get from space exploration ALL OF THE TIME.
spinoff.nasa.gov
Saying that we need NASA to invent things is extremely naive. Just because NASA puts together a list of spin-offs doesn't mean that the $$$ spent on them is justified. People that parrot this NASA talking point do not appreciate the magnitude of the cost.
There is no end of mindless lemmings that reflexively spout the NASA spin offs fallacy.
I was in grad school with several NASA engineers in the early 90's when the space station was being debated. They openly called it a welfare project for NASA engineers. $200 Billion dollars later they were right.
WOW! NASA doesnt invent this stuff so you can have a better life, it invents it out of necessity for itself....yet you beneifit directly from it. NASA (or more correctly our government) licenses the technology to manufacturers as a way to recover some of the cost of the space program.........that is just one small benefit to all of us.......your clealry do not understand economics, or have any kind of vison for human kind.......you probably dont even get how many different ways humans could be wiped off this earth. CLEARLY you have some wacky political agenda, and are a lemming for those kooky crazy people who have lied and misinformed you.
I would much rather our Gov't spend 200 billion on a space station that we can look at with pride of accomplishment, than spend 6 trillion on wars with very little if anything accomplished.
In response to linda123 “I got a better idea, Buzz. How about we spend that money on education and medical research here on earth?”
Two reasons: Investing directly into education and medical will get us positive results, albiet finite results. You put a dollar’s worth of gas into your tank and pay the dollar. As Apollo has shown us, a major space program is like buying the gas station. A considerable investment, of course. But then you sell gas, oil, and other products and pay for the gas in your tank and so much more. This is proven and is not arguable. The many products and advancements in education and in the medical field, and there’s no need to count or name them here, that came into being as a result of the early space programs have bettered our lives in countless ways.
The other reason is that won’t get us to Mars.
To me, the entire purpose of the space program should be to enable people to live in self-sustaining colonies in outer space, should the Earth ever become uninhabitable for any reason, such as a huge asteroid hit, say. First we need to establish a permanent, self-sustaining colony on the Moon, and then, with the lessons learned on the Moon, establish one on Mars.
The goal should be to advance our understanding of the universe and our place in it. The technology advancements that will result are inevitable.
Why the moon? Because it is closer? that is a very bad reason why. that is like saying we should set up a colony in antartica which is a 100 miles away, instead of a tropical island because it is 1000 miles away......the logic doesnt follow. Mars is entirely more feasible and survivable....why waste time on the moon, when mars is a much better place to start?
As much as I'd rather see them start a base on Mars first, a step-by-step approach seams safer. With a small moon base they can see if their ideas pan out, get lessons learned, and if they made a gross error then it's only a 3 day trip back home.
There's no reason not to aim for both exploration and colonization. I for one favor O'Neill colonies, which could be put pretty much anywhere once we develop the construction techniques. The main thing is we need to start wanting it again. Space in general is all ho-hum to the masses these days, the sense of wonder and adventure are at a low point. However interest in Mars is in an upswing thanks to Curiosity, I'm happy to see how often it's a front-page story on so many non-science news sites. This is a good time to drum up interest in and support for Mars.
Yeah, and let’s put the whole of the Republican Congressional house members on the first flight.
I will contribute, no, I will buy the rocket....start with McCain .
Ha, Buzz Aldrin's mother's maiden name was Moon 🙂
China will be waiting there to greet the U.S., laughing and saying " What took you so long?"
China's Space stuff is all stolen/copycatted from the USA anyway. They won't be going anywhere either.
Your an uneducated fool....it is NOT american technology, nor did they steal it.....they BOUGHT the technology from the russians, it is soyuz technology, which is dependable, but very much NOT state of the art. Pull your foot out of your a$$ moron!!
Russians stole a lot of stuff like the Space Shuttle design and copycatted it themselves. The lethal Van Allen Radiation Belts will doom any and all Moon and Mars trips.
And the world is flat...yah yah,.....run along.....your a fool, we all get that.
Oh.. i see.. you're a phucking mor0n aren't you?
No, he/she/it's a sad little troll, feigning stupidity to get a little attention.
...
Well... OK, maybe they're not faking it.
With there out of date 1960s technology of renovated russian soyuz capsules.......No possible way your correct. Research before you make blatantly incorrect statements.
china??? No way, do you know much about there space program? Research it, they are small, and politically inept as much as the US. the intellectuals who hold sway over theire all have agendas, and they cant come up with even a cohesive strategy to get to NEO........they are not willing to incest money into space travel either....nor do they have mature technology to do so. SpaceX will be going to mars in the next 15 years....in a oartnership with NASA.
That one way ticket to Marsis looking better & better NOT
We can start buy sending the entire Republican Congressional House on the first trip and we don’t need them back.
That would start to bring this country back into the 21st century..
Mars won't be taken by the US, you have no money for it. None. As for Curiosity... Oh come on. Why does this get so hyped? Congratulations, NASA's doing exactly what they did in the 70s. Curiosity isn't progress, it's stagnation. Besides, NASA is too busy with outreach programs towards mohammedan countries and beating the drum for Al Gore's multi-billion dollar scam.
Meanwhile JAXA lands a probe on an asteroid, takes samples and brings it back home. Now that is progress.
If anyone will take the Mars, it'll be Asia.
LMAO@U..........ah, so your a namerica hater...got it. asia has no space program......if you mean china, they have such a small space program that is run by intellectuals with their own agendas, and cant even come up with a cohesive plan to get to LEO.........no, clearly it will be the US, most likely a partnership between NASA and SpaceX that will take us to mars.
Fly, I agree that this guy is anti American, but hes right in a way. China has made huge progress in space in just 20 years. They will be probably be the first to get to Mars, as they have the extra cash to do it.
Nik....now way....research chinas space program......dont go by what youve heard in the press.....really, china does not have much of a space program...........it is very easy to get to LEO now, that is all china has accomplished. china has virtually no capability, in space......they will NEVER be a space power the way they are going.....they are way worse than NASA when it comes to agendas and setting a course and sticking with it.
You're right: we don't have any budget for further space exploration because our government wasted it! They spent it on wars searching for 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' that don't exist. And they spent it bailing-out huge banks and car companies that were all fiscally irresponsible...
And here's the kicker: We're just now seeing the tip of the iceberg! When the current crop of baby-boomers lives even longer than anticipated, our Social Security finances will be even further depleted. Trust me: we haven't seen anything, yet!
Why don't we move beyond the archaic technologies now in use and for public display use what we actually have available to us and is in use for so-called military procedures.
And that would be what?
Yes! Mr. Aldrin is so right – the scientific advances that will come from a challenge like this one will help humanity!
Buzz is a great American from an age when America was great. They reached for the moon and actually got there! Our current generation of leaders and citizens is not interested in dreaming or achieving big things. Congress has continually whittled NASA's budget for the last 40 years. The public cannot sustain interest in a multi-year project. China will reach Mars before we do. They at least have a plan and political will. Maybe in 100 years some company will go there and claim the resources to sell back to the Government. Until then, America will continue to be distracted with things like celebrity culture, wars and consumerism. It's sad because we could have done so much more...
Wow feelingold, you are completely spot-on with your comment!
Except the China part.....that is misinformed at best, and ludicrous. Please research the Chinese space program before you make totally false statements like that. they have virtually no space program, and no researces being invested into a space program....NOT going to happen.
Fly, China's space program is slow and methodical, but it's progressing very steadily. If China decides to use it's in-progress space station for orbital manufacture they may very well make space profitable for them, and if they do, their entire program will ramp up quickly.
This incidentally is one of the many easily reachable goals that NASA proposed and Congress dismissed in the 90s.
I got a better idea, Buzz. How about we spend that money on education and medical research here on earth?
Do me a favor; go look up "NASA spin-off technologies." Space exploration and the technological advance it effects have been responsible for much of the technology that you probably take for granted every day. From research NASA performs on survivability in extreme conditions, we learn about health and nutrition in ways that benefit us here on Earth too.
Compare the Federal budgets of the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Education, and NASA from 2007: the DHHS was budgeted 640.7 Billion, the Dept. of Education had $89.9 Billion, and NASA had only $16.3 Billion.
Wave, I could not agree more! So many scientific advances will come from this!
Absolutely! I get so upset when people talk about how this money can be better spent elsewhere. That couldn't be further from the truth! NASA has traditionally been one of the most lucrative investments that the government could make. Every dollar that was spent on the Apollo Program has seen a 14 dollar return of investment in new products and talent on the market.
You do realize that even if that was to happen, the US is still done for financially, right? Your national debt and deficit are through the roof. DC could completely shut down NASA and absolutely nothing would change. Heck, the problem isn't even no money in education, but rather a completely broken education system that focuses on how people feel about something rather than teaching facts. As for medical research... Ha, yeah, too bad, that's no longer pioneered in the US either.
I have the best idea for you: inform yourself first before you do the same old "think of the children" nonsense. People like you destroyed the US space program.
Really, It teaches about how people feel about things rather then facts. Do yo have specific examples of this or did you make up the data. Currently, right now what we have to an over reliance on testing, so what is being taught is how to pass tests. The new "common core" standards for science tries to replace this with teaching e=deeper concepts but I don't know how this will play with testing. But the switch ovr to common core standards is comming soon. I've not seen any "feeling based science standards".
Yes over all they could do better. One way YOU can help is to offer to volunteer your time some how. Figure out what you are good at then offer that.
Pull that foot out of your mouth, as space travel requires and delivers an immense amount of medical research. the benefit to mankind would be immens for a mars mission.
feeding the poor seems irellevant when you consider a small asteroid with a virus that could spread and wipe out all of mankind in a very short period could hit us, or a large one could blindside and kill us all too.
Medicine and feeding the poor is important for sure, but a better thing would be to reduce un-neccesary military spe ding dramatically, and use it for space......we do not need to spend more than the next 9 countries combined in military defense, that is just insane. we do not need the capability to fight two seperate wars at the same time........we are the most violent nation in the history of humankind......it is time to change that and start exploring space.
I'm glad linda123 is not in charge of my money.
